Dual booting and having the same drive for game

Heya, so I am trying to figure out a thing on which I would love some help.

I am dualbooting manjaro with windows, and I was wondering how to allocate drives and such, so I was thinking about having a disk, split for the OSes, and another disk where I am going install stuff, namely games, and since I want to use windows less and less, and I don't want to have games duplicated in drives, I wanted some help on figuring if it is possible to have a drive where linux and windows will install said games, I know that linux can support NTFS drives, windows being a bit fussy about filesystems, I was wondering, if it is even possible to have an NTFS drive where Windows' Epic and Steam will install games, and linux's lutris (steam and epic) will access to the exact same installation, I am of course talking about non-linux games, so help would is wanted on the possibility and how, better ideas are welcome!

Dual booting Debian and Manjaro?

I have been using Manjaro for a while on my laptop and would like to install Debian alongside it. I work with Debian-based devices like the raspberry pi and I will likely be teaching a computer science course this fall so I would like to stay current and familiar with Debian on my daily driver.

Anyway, I did a test run on a desktop computer that was also running Manjaro, with Debian installed on the same SSD (as it will on my laptop) and ran into a couple problems. It hangs at Starting SDDM but that's a problem for another post I think.

My main concern is with the boot sequence. For reference I used the netinstaller. When I ran my install, I did everything manually. Trimmed down an ext4 partition to make room for a BTRFS root partition, added a swap partition, then let it do its thing. I don't remember seeing a place to select an existing boot partition like there are in other installers, so I'm not sure where it ended up putting the boot files but the computer now defaults to booting to Debian's GRUB. [I will check exactly what the drive's partitioning looks like later and follow up if needed, right now my daughter is having a precarious sleep in the room next to the offending PC].

My desired behavior would be to continue to use "Manjaro's" GRUB, where I can select Debian if that's where I want to boot.

What do I need to do during install to accomplish that? Cheers!

EDIT: This may be as simple as changing the boot order to Manjaro first, then running sudo update-grub to add Debian to the list but I can't test that right now due to the daughter situation mentioned earlier, and that motherboard is dying so it freezes every time I try to rearrange the boot devices -.-

Dual booting question

I'm really getting tired of Windows. Since Windows 11, it's pretty hard to use something else than Edge as your default browser, and in general I want to have more control over my system. I have used Linux before, including Linux Mint and Manjaro and I would like to dual boot it with my Windows system. I use Windows for gaming, since I mostly use the Epic Games store and some external launchers for my games.

Is dualbooting safe? Do Windows updates break the Linux install and is a Windows / Linux Mint dualboot stable enough for daily use? What features should I disable or enable in Windows before dual-booting?

Dual Booting Windows 11 & Fedora - Separate SSDs

I am in the process of prepping my machine which is currently dual booting Windows 11 & Ubuntu. When I initially did the set up for Ubuntu I later discovered that I ran in to this nasty bug.

What I would like to do is have Windows 11 on its own SSD, Fedora on its own SSD and have their bootloaders installed on their respective SSDs. This way I can set Fedora to boot first and then chose from GRUB which OS I want to go in to.

I wasn't able to find much info on the Anaconda installer as to when that step to specify bootloader location comes in ? Should I also disconnect the windows drive when installing Fedora ?

Tried Dual-Booting and messed up big time

Assalamu alaikum

So I was trying to install Ubuntu on my Asus Windows 10 laptop. On the Partition menu, I chose manual partitioning and probably messed up on this part.

I was following a tutorial but the guy and mine were not matching. Mine was showing "no EFI system partition was found". So I did some tweaking to force install(What was I thinking!)

Now it started to install but at the very last moment some error occurred and the installation failed.

Now if I restart the laptop it shows "reboot and select proper boot device".

Man, I really just wanna go back to my Windows 10 😭

Please help me out. What do I do now? If you need any more details, I'll let you know.

Dual booting two Windows 10 installs on two separate drives

I was wondering how I should go about installing two separate installs of Windows 10, each on its own drive? The main reason I want to do this is to keep all my work environment and personal projects separate from my gaming. There will also be different configurations and such that I'd like to have. I will probably have to share some files from each so not sure how the permissions will work or if it will "just work" because of logging in with the same Microsoft account.

The main issue is I could just install on each drive and manually swap the boot in bios, but was hoping there was a way to have a bootloader menu similar to grub. Also in general if there is a way I should best go about doing this I'm all ears.

Dual booting different drives

First of all I have 0 experience dual booting. I am using linux as my daily and primary drive for 2 years. Until now I kept a separate Windows SSD and whenever I needed Windows I simply changed my SSD, updated BIOS settings accordingly and booted up. When I am finished I changed the SSD back to linux one.

As you may think I started to get sick of changing SSDs back and forth. Also I know after a while the SSD sockets start to wear down and I definitely don't want that.

From all the time I lurked here and other forums/subreddits I learned that keeping a dual boot setup with linux and windows can get pretty ugly with Windows updates messing with the grub and boot partition. To avoid that I want to dual boot from different drives but still I have some uncertainties and questions.

I already have a 1 TB SSD M2 running mx linux and another 512GB SSD SATA on which I want to run Windows 10.

  1. When I install Windows on the SATA SSD will it install its own boot partition on its own SSD or will it somehow mess with the boot partition on the Linux SSD?
  2. When I change SSDs Windows requires BIOS>Advanced>SATA>Intel RST but Linux requires BIOS>Advanced>SATA>AHCI. Until now I had my SATA drive as ext4 but when I install windows it will be NTFS. After the Windows installation can I simply leave it on Intel RST since the Linux SSD will have nothing to do with SATA SSD?
  3. Is there anything I need to be aware of as a person with no experience on dual booting?

Help Me Toss Windows Completely Overboard (Dual Booting)

Okay, so I hate dual booting Windows alongside my Kubuntu install. The only reason I still use it is because I have a VR helmet, and because my niece and nephew enjoy playing games on my system. I can resolve their issue easily enough by making them an account and putting their games on it (I checked and most seem to work with proton), it's the VR part of it I need to address.

I've seen people talk about virtual machines, and I was wondering if it would be possible to run my VR headset (it's a Samsung Odyssey) through a virtual machine? I don't know what kind of performance hit there would be. I'll list my specs to see if anyone can tell:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600
32 GB DDR4 RAM
AMD RX 580 8 GB Video Card
1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD

If there's no way to reliably run my VR system with a virtual machine, then if you have other options (not expensive, please, I am on a budget) I would gladly hear them. That said, I really want to cut all ties with Windows, and so your help would be appreciated.

Dual Booting Endeavour OS and Windows 11

Hello, everyone!

I have a problem with the dual boot of Windows 11 and Endeavour OS.

First, I installed Windows 11, dedicating 500mb to the UEFI partition, then, I reduced my 1 terabyte SSD to 750Gb for Windows 11.

I disabled Secure BOOT and than Fast Boot from the bios.

Then I booted the Endeavour OS iso, within which I selected "manual partitioning", during the installation.

  1. I selected the uefi partition, putting UEFI/BIOS as mount

  2. I created from the remaining GB of the SSD a "linuxswap" partition with "swap" flag, allocating 16 GB, since I have 16 GB of ram.

  3. The remaining space, I selected as mount / , with root flag.

When I reboot the PC, Windows 11 starts automatically, if I check the partitions, the partition reserved for Endeavour OS is full, but it doesn't let me choose which OS to access, Windows 11 starts automatically.

Did I do something wrong? What can I do to fix the problem?

P.S I'm a linux noob, please be patient

Dual Booting Manjaro/Mint with Windows 11, a few issues I need to learn to tackle.

So I've been having a really hard time dual booting windows and Linux. A couple of months ago when I had Windows 10, trying to dual boot with Ubuntu would land me on a GRUB CLI on boot every time (IDK what the issue was, never been able to fix it), was a blank black page with GRUB (version) heading, had to press escape or type exit or something to get out of there. Mint distro would straight up throw some Graphics related issues on me on getting installed, or even through a live USB. I gave up back then.

I recently hopped on to Windows 11, have some spare time on my hands to attempt to dual boot. I was thinking maybe I'd make it work with Manjaro. A couple of questions I have here:-

  1. I will be using Win 11 around 80% of the time so I don't want the dual boot option on startup every time. Fortunately, my laptop provides a boot order in the UEFI where I 'think' i will just place the windows Boot Option on the top and I'll end up on win 11 all the time, and in the remaining 20% of the situations, I'll enter the BIOS and manually head over to Linux.
  2. IDK what the GRUB CLI issue was, I'm really afraid that it'll happen again. Is there any way to make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen?
  3. I have a 256 GB SSD on which there is disk vol C (win 11 OS files) and a 1 TB 5400rpm HDD on which I've left 150 GB unallocated for Linux. While going through some subreddits back when I was having GRUB issues, I read it had something to do with the boot config files? Anything I'm supposed to know about those files if I'm attempting to dual boot?

Worth it dual booting old os/ problems I might encounter ?

So I run a very old pc with specs :- 1.6 GHz Intel pentium e2140 dual core (800 MHz each) 3gb RAM 256 mb VRAM(some Intel integrated chipset) 32 bit

I currently run Windows 7 and play mainly very old games but many of them have compatibility issues with win 7 and run like s-word or not at all because of extra stuff I have to do to make them work on 7, general incompatibility and of course the resources that are needed for running win 7 itself (this one is rare though) Lately I've been having even more trouble with getting stuff to run and I'm considering dual booting with an older os like Windows XP or 2000 (if it's even possible). I don't want to dual boot with vista since it shares most if not all problems with said games. Win 2000 should be able to run most of my games and Win XP should run practically everything that I have on my pc except maybe a couple right now My question is, can I even do it and are there any problems I should know about like the os limiting my system resources because of the fact that well, they are old.

I don't want to fully let go of win 7 since it does support some newer stuff that xp won't run.

Proper multiple SSD dual booting

So I'm trying out AME as a separate SSD installation in my system, and when I wanted to get back to Linux I used a utility called EasyUEFI to set my Linux drive partition to boot into Linux so I could properly set up GRUB for dual booting.

Now I have this strange issue where if I use Linux then try going back to Windows AME the following oddities occur. I get a bluescreen message telling me the UEFI thing failed to load correctly. If I reset my system and go back to loading Windows, it will load but it will not load my user profile correctly and it throws me to a black empty desktop, being unable to load Classic Shell.

If I then go and reset (via ctrl alt del) and load up Windows once more, it finally works correctly again. But this process repeats itself if I have to use Linux.

I would prefer not to mess with any Windows MBR replacing bootloader stuff (grub2win or whatever). Is there a way I can correctly boot into Windows from the GRUB bootloader on my other drive? I bet this is a conflict caused by having multiple SSDs for separate OS installs.
