A list of puns related to "Culms"
The cultivated maize (Zea mays) is one of relatively few grass species that have a solid culm, whereas a culm with hollow internodes is the most common type in the grass family (Poaceae). So I was wondering if the solid stem in maize is a result of cultivation, or if the trait appeared before the onset of cultivation? For example, do wild teosinte species have solid culms?
Is there a relationship between the size and appearance of rhizomes to that of the culms they will produce. I recently bought a phyllostachys nigra rhizome from amazon. The rhizome is less than an inch in diameter and yellow. Was I scammed or do I have to wait and see?
I have a bit of a rabbit problem for my young plants and I was wondering if a culm was snapped, if it will continue to push out of the ground or if it will stop growing? I had a culm that was maybe 24 inches out of the ground and the woody part nearest to the ground is thick enough in diameter that the rabbits won't be able to bother it, but they snapped it further up where it's thinner. Will it continue to push out of the ground to reach it's full height or is it shot now?
