A list of puns related to "Codecs"
This is an opinion and friend and I share, and I was just wondering if this is also shared by other members of the 40k community.
The idea originated when we learned that basically everyone around us was using battlescribe/wahapedia for rules, and we just thought:
We thought that something like this might help mitigate piracy and similar in the community, while also allowing GW to have an online source for all the rules that everyone can access freely so there's so additional price barrier into an already expensive hobby.
Also, an online source means GW can just update it/replace the .pdf with a new version when rules get fixed.
I'm a professional mastering audio engineer, and it bothers me to see so many misconceptions about audio codecs on this subreddit, so I will try to clear some of the most common myths I see.
It's a complete downgrade from a Wav master, or a lossless FLAC generated from the master. It's just a useless codec that is being heavily marketed as an audiophile product, trying to make money from the back of people that don't understand the science behind it.
It makes no sense to listen to the "Master" quality from Tidal instead of the original, bit-perfect 44.1kHz master from the "Hifi" quality.
There's no getting around the pigeonhole principle, if you want the best quality possible, you need to use lossless codecs.
People hearing a difference between MQA and the original master are actually hearing the artifacts of MQA, which are aliasing and ringing, respectively giving a false sense of detail and softening the transients.
Regarding high sample rates, people can't hear above ~20kHz (some studies found that some individuals can hear up to 23kHz, but with very little sensitivity), and a 44.1kHz signal can PERFECTLY reproduce any frequency below 22.05kHz, the Nyquist frequency. You scientifically CAN'T hear the difference between a 44.1kHz and a 192kHz signal.
Even worse, some low-end gear struggle with high sample rates, producing audible distortion because it can't properly handle the ultrasonic material.
What can be considered is the use of a bad SRC (sample rate converter) in the process of downgrading a high-resolution master to standard resolutions. They can sometime produce aliasing and other artifacts. But trust me, almost every mastering studios and DAWs in 2021 use good ones.
As for bit depth, mastering engineers use dither, which REMOVES quantization artifacts by restricting the dynamic range. It gives 16-bits signals a ~84dB dynamic range minimum (modern dithers perform better), which is A LOT, even for the most dynamic genres of music. It's well enough for any listener.
High sample rates and bit depth exist because they are useful in the production process, but they are useless for listeners.
TL;DR : MQA is useless and is worse than a CD quality lossless file.
I updated my Shield 2019 to FW 9/Android 11 and was looking for issues but luckily I did not notice any. However, I did notice that there seemed to be less artifacts on the local channel I was watching and sure enough VP9 codec was enabled. I checked all my locals and they were all VP9, but all cable channels are still AVC.
I thought maybe it was something to with the update so I checked some other devices and it was enabled on them.

I've been trying to get larger and higher-quality files to download and when I increased my allowable file-size and quality profiles, I started getting a lot of movies labeled "remux". I've looked into the term and I think I understand it, more or less. What I don't quite get is this: a lot of the files are encoded in h264 and many of them are encoded in h265/HEVC. The latter type don't play back well on my system and I'd like to avoid them. I have a number of keywords in my "must not contain" list like h265, hevc, etc, but is there any way to avoid these downloads, when the name of the release doesn't seem to consistently advertise the correct codec contained in the file?

Have a question about Sonarr's media info > video codec values. What is the difference in regards to Sonarr between HEVC and x265?
From my understanding HEVC is the actual codec the media is encoded with, while x265 is just the encoder itself.
I was watching a tv show these past couple of days without issue, and once I hit episode 9 it wouldn't play at all. After checking playback settings, I was getting an error that the player doesn't support http, hevc in an mkv container.
Now after doing some research and messing around with other 4k WEB-DL quality shows I have, it seems like the media that can play fine shows x265 as the video codec in Sonarr's media info, and the media that either doesn't play or has some stutter issues shows HEVC under the video codec. Its confusing the hell out of me.
Now the issue on why the HEVC content cannot direct play/has stutter issues is something that I will eventually try and figure out, but I'm pretty sure its Apple TV related (10bit HDR direct play issue when encoded with HEVC and 24 or above fps?), however I would like to know the diffference between the above "Codec" values if anyone happens to know.

I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna solve a problem I have. I sure others have run into this too.
I have about a dozen users. They each have at least one device obviously, but some have more. They also all have their own different internet access.
I'm seeing a lot of strange transcoding going one for certain people, usually because their internet is really bad, couple3d with terrible wifi, and old HW. I even run into the occasional movie that just won't play for some people.
The most recent is a file that will only play via direct play. It just WILL NOT transcode.
What do I do about this? Should I convert my thousands of movies and shows to 1 consistent file type or codec? I don't even know what causing this specific file to not convert.
I have tried: DeoVR, Skybox, whirligig, Virtual home theater, MR video player, MermaidVR, older versions of DeoVR. I have tried with Lav Filters, I have tried with the manufacturer provided windows HEVC codec, I have tried nearly everything I can possibly think of and I cannot get remotely acceptable playback of high quality, high resolution VR videos. I'm unbelievably frustrated at this point.
My system is a 6700k and radeon 5700. Should acceptable. And yet the amount of freezing, stuttering and low FPS I get on VR videos makes them unplayable. Even when trying windows inbuilt media player and the "manufacturer provided" HEVC codec on the windows store the videos lag and are a mess (playing on flat). I have tried also selecting D3D11 in Lav and DXVA2, neither work.

When rendering video, it seems the only codec available for ffmpeg / MP4 is MJPEG (it's the only one listed in the dropdown, in Windows). This tends to produce very big files.
I usually do another run with ffmpeg outside of Reaper to get a more manageable filesize (with no noticeable drop in quality), but it's an extra step.
Is there a way to select a different codec when rendering video in MP4? Since Reaper seems to use ffmpeg under the hood, we should have access to all ffmpeg options?
What are the best practices when rendering video?
The title basically. Playing Horizon 5 there's so much pixelation and the picture being grainy it really ruins the experience. Even upping it from 15mbps to 25mbps would do wonders I think. The input lag is manageable now though. I imagine they won't up the bitrate anytime soon, but perhaps improved codecs can come to the rescue sooner rather than later? It's kind of a shame they don't include picture quality/bitrate/codecs as a feedback option after playing. Surely Microsoft must know that it should be one of the most requested improvements though.

I don't know if this is an already discussed topic but I would strongly recommend to use SBC codec instead of AAC on android devices (go into the bluetooth device options and switch off HD Audio AAC option, which is on by default).
This greatly improved the audio latency on my phone (google pixel 4a), from ~200/300ms to <100ms.
I read online that AAC audio performance on Android is unreliable depending on the handset, and my experience seems to confirm this.
Perhaps your mileage may vary depending on your phone, but I would suggest to try and see if performance improve.
Hello, I have a quick question, when you buy a headset or headphones compatible for example with LDAC or aptX, activated in the android settings, if I use a player on Android, for example simple music player, is it that the LDAC / aptX codec will be used? Or do you need a compatible player? Because the format is flac so I don't know if it decompresses flac, re-encodes it, etc. Thank you

6- troubleshooting
If you have problems with sound, open device manager and look if mic of headphones causing problems, in my case the microphone of headphones, disable device
If your headphones or sound devices do not have a microphone, they should not have problems
7- test
If the sound works but sounds screeching or clunky, turn off low latency support

Hi, I have recently installed Fedora-35 into QEMM/KVM and Virt-manager. Love it all and will probably replace Mint (main-PC) with it in a week or two.
I cannot remember what I responded to with the Installation question about 3rd party software/codecs etc.
But, when I go to a Reddit "/r/" that has a video or Animated GIF, Fedora thinks about for a few seconds then crashes and reboots.
What minimal Codec etc installs do I need to add?

Why did Liquid Snake PHYSICALLY disguise himself as Master Miller?! I'm very confident the Codec in MGS was strictly 2-way audio.
Anyone know what was used to create the sounds the codec makes? Specifically opening the Codec or opening the item menu?
I don't think I've ever heard a sound quite like that before and was curious if they have an interesting origin.
Let's say you want the absolute best quality because you are filming short clips (so no SD card size constraints), and you are editing on Apple silicon which slices through h265 like butter.
Objectively, which provides the best quality? X-AVC HS (about 200mbps), or X-AVC S-I (about 600mbps)?
People seem to have different answers on this, some say S-I because every frame is captured in full, some say X-AVC HS because it's a more efficient codec and each frame has more information.
Is there an authoritative / objective answer?
I have Feodra35 as a VM (Mint 20.2 Host) and have Redirected the Realtech Bluetooth radio to the Client.
It discovers and connects with the Samsung HM1900 Bluetooth hands-free headset. I can hear it when it uses the Input with A2DP sinc, codec SBC but when I select the HM1900 in the Output, it assigns *HSP/HSF, codec mSBC to both.
If I then go back to test the Input I get white noise.
How do I force the Input to use codec that works with the Output codec?
Or, I suppose, stop them both insisting on using the same code.
Apologies if this is the wrong place but last night when I went to watch some movies using the MX Player app on my Sony Bravia I was told that the codec was out of date:
"Can't find custom codec. Please use version 1.41.2 ARMv7 NEON codec."
In the past I've always had success with the MX_AIO.zip but the latest version I could find is 1.35, and none of the zip files I could find worked.
I do have other media apps but none have the functionality of MX Player. Does anyone have a link for the correct version?

Recently switched from Firefox to Qutebrowser, and found it amazing. But there is one small problem that my old laptop gpu doesn't support VP9 hardware decoding, so I wonder if there is any way to only use h264 codec to play youtube video.
When I looked at a rack with a Cisco room kit pro and room kit plus I noticed the audio was wired analog from the DSPs. I asked the programmer why he wouldnβt prefer using USB directly from the biamp dsp. As I would with a MTR. One cable, no phenix connectors. He told me he hadnβt figured out how to make it work. The Cisco seemed like it should have just found the IO via USB but it never did. He couldnβt find any settings for it so he switched back to analog. When I look at Cisco documentation it always shows analog wiring. This seems stupid to me. Does anyone else use USB from a dsp directly to a Cisco codec? Anything special you had to do to get it to work?
I usually use x264 but decided to start playing around with x265 (1080p file source). Felt like I found a happy place with x264 that maximized what I wanted to do with it but am having a tougher time finding my "middle ground" in x265. After doing a few experiments playing around with quality, encoder tune, etc. I was curious about what other people like to use for such settings when compressing a 1080p file. I know it's a very subjective question and depends on system, what you're using it for, etc. I'm just curious to hear what other people like to do and why. Thanks!
Trying to install custom codecs in the Decoder menu. Have them all in there, zipped and unzipped, will only show folders and no files. Tried search both on USB and on the TV hard disk, in the Download folder, still nothing.
I've seen videos where it shows files (as it should), but on mine it only shows folders, so impossible to select the codec file.

Hello my fellow fiio users.
As you can already tell, i have a connection problem with the new UTWS5, i already own the UTWS3 and wanted to upgrade them for Christmas,( which i did).
However upon the first connection the audio started to cut out about after 15 seconds and then completely disconnect from my phone.
What I found out, is that it only happens when i use the aptx codec, which works fine with the UTWS3.
Is this a common problem, and do you know about any possible solutions? I am still able to return them, if i turns out that they're faulty.

I've been really spinning up lately with my video editing, and one of the pain points has quickly become working with .mp4 (H264/H265) files. I've read about how terrible they are to work with, and although I have in the past, it's more apparent now, in larger projects, than ever before.
Right now, I'm transcoding (with AME) to ProRes 422/444 (for camera/screen capture) and although it's very fast, the file sizes are huge and I feel bad for my drive, writing that much data somewhat frequently.
What would you recommend for a codec to transcode to for editing? I intend to link back to the source media at the end, but whilst working, what's a good codec to work with? I'd really prefer GPU acceleration if possible, too.
I am curious as to what people think of this. The goal of AV1 was to do away with licensing fees but H.266 support is still still headed our way whether we like it or not via 2022 hardware and onwards that people will surely buy and the companies behind such codecs will surely keep trying to continue their dominance of the marketplace.
Will AV1 effectively end the use of licensed codecs in the near future or are we going to see a power struggle between H.265 and AV1 and then yet another power struggle between H.266 and AV2 for the upcoming 8K streaming market? After all, H.266 has the advantage of being first to market for 8K products such as the new Mediatek chip we saw announced this week, while AV2 is many years away, just as H.265 is already widely used in 1080p and 4K streaming as we speak. Meanwhile, AV1 is only now making it to new hardware like new Roku boxes and the 4K Max Stick.
How long will it take for AV1 to actually make the streaming landscape fully open? Are we destined to see AV1 struggle against the fast adoption of H.265/H.266 for many years to come? Or is AV1 strong enough as an offering to completely replace H.265 in a few years?
Will we have to wait until AV2 before we see open source codecs dominate the streaming market?
Will new H.26x offerings ever become a thing of the past?
