If Sun Yat-Sen didn’t die as soon as he did in our timeline, would the Chinese Civil War still have happened?

(CONTEXT): Both Mao Zedong and Sun Yat-Sen personally really liked each other. But different ideals. So how would’ve had played out with Sun leading the KMT instead of Chiang?

To what extent did the US consider to actively engage in the Chinese Civil War after 1945?

After WWII the US followed a strategy of containment, trying to prevent the spread of communism. To my knowledge, the US supported the KMT with arms and ammunition, but did not deploy own troops. However, at first glance a direct intervention in the Chinese Civil War might have appeared compelling because possibly the "fall" to communism of a very large country might have been prevented. After all, the US were still the only country with nuclear weapons, they had a strong force in the region which now "only" had to occupy Japan (instead of conquering it), and they had a gigantic war industry already up and running. On the other hand, risking a direct confrontation with the USSR which occupied Manchuria seems a strong deterrent.

I am especially interested in the following points:

  • Was the future role of the allied nations in a possible continuation of the Chinese Civil War already agreed upon during WWII?
  • Which individuals (if any) in the US leadership were in favor of intervention and how did the decision-making play out?
  • To what extent were domestic politics considered, e.g. war weariness of the American public?
  • Did other western allies have strong opinions on the matter, or were they focusing on rebuilding after the war?

The second Chinese civil war begins, 1965.

Mongolians bigger a bit, East Turkestan was liberated by the UN after a revolt against post-war Chinese rule, Tibet was never conquered by the Guomindang, and Manchuria is an independent republic placed as a buffer state by Nationalist China and the West against the USSR. Mongolia was also liberated from Communism after a civil war in 1956 which was won by western backed pro-democracy forces.
