This game is kinda spoiling me and I'm pretty sure I can't go back to traditional 2D Mario after I'm over with this game. I got this free from the Epic Store a while ago, but only recently got to play it (I got a new laptop). When this game came out I saw a lot of people talking about how good it was because it was similar to DKCR: Tropical Freeze. I never played Tropical Freeze, but I had a small experience with the previous game on the Wii. Tropical Freeze is often regarded as the best Nintendo 2D platformer ever made and if it's any better than the original DKCR I can totally agree.
That being said, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair being similar to Tropical Freeze is probably just the beginning of the description for this game. The developers bombarded this game with ideas from many different games and somehow they work beautifully.
First of all, the game opens up with two stages. The very first one and the final one. The Impossible Lair is a stage that can be tackled at any time and the final boss is there waiting for you. As you go from level to level, you free "battalion bees" that can help you overcome the stage by basically giving you one HP so that you can progress further. Or, if you're skillful, you can try to learn the entirety of the final stage and just beat it in one go without freeing any of the bees (the game also gives you that option if you rescue all the bees or some of them).
The world map, similar to Super Mario 3D World, allows you to control the characters and go from place to place selecting the stages. However, instead of being a glorified menu, the world map is an actual place that you need to explore in other to find secrets and, most importantly, unlock alternative versions of all stages. This is a big highlight in this game for me, because it sometimes feels like a Zelda map. There are puzzles everywhere, a lot of things to discover and everything feels very engaging and intuitive. It's basically a game within the game.
In the topic of alternative version of the stages I still haven't come across a single time where the alternative theme repeats. There is a stage that gets covered in sticky honey, another one that becomes an autoscroller, one where winds blow and move platforms, one that gets flooded and much more. Every single one feels unique and well thought out. I have seem Nintendo do this in the 3D series, but not to this extent. And they absolutely never incorporated that to the overall world map.

... keep reading on reddit β‘So, there are only 4 slayers. I know that the developers, admins, island builders, etc, are busy with the nether update, but I thought that we could do with another slayer. So, I've come up with everything that you would need to know about this slayer concept, the Skeletal Celeste!
Requirements: Defeating t3 Voidgloom Seraph.
As the name implies, it is spawned by killing skeletons and variants of skeletons. Like any slayer, it cannot be spawned in dungeons.
It's vanilla appearance (assuming no TP) is a skeleton wearing blue leather armor with a golden and blue "crown" (can maybe be made with a player head idk). The skeleton rides a Skeleton Horse with diamond horse armor when "Doomsday" is active for t4.
Now for the boss fight. Note that the stats are just the Voidgloom Seraph's stats but less HP and more DPS. Also note that each tier carries all of the abilities from the previous tiers. Slayer XP reward is the same as all other slayers.
Tier of the Slayer | HP / DPS | Ability Addon | 2nd Ability Addon |
---|---|---|---|
Tier 1 | 100k HP / 1000 DMG when using it's bow, 750 DMG when in close range | Petrified - Only takes damage from abilities, bows, enchantments that add extra damage, and any weapon that is from this slayer's drops or recipes. DOES NOT take damage from necromancy mobs. | Binding of Fate - Other players cannot deal damage to this boss. If they try to attack it, they are given a blindness effect and are teleported to spawn (they do not die because that would be a bit extreme). |
Tier 2 | 10M / 7500 DMG when using it's bow, 5000 DMG when in close range | ARISE - Summons 10 Skeletons (50k HP, 2k Defense and no DPS but they deal true knockback) and 5 Star Sentries (5 True HP in hits, 50 DPS). These are summoned where the boss is, and are summoned at 50% HP. Necromancy mobs CAN damage these, and the Petrified ability does not apply to these summons. | Commanding Order - The boss will start saying random pieces of dialog during the fight. :) |
Tier 3 | 50M / 15000 DMG when using it's bow, 12000 DMG when in close range | Soul Whisper - You will be transported into a fake "Limbo" for up to 30 seconds at 75% HP to answer 3 questions (10 seconds per question). The questions are similar to the quiz puzzle in the Catacombs, and they are answered through the chat by clicking. If you get it wrong or take too much time per question (over 10s for a question), you die and fail the slayer quest. | Binding of Oblivion - Upgrade to binding of fate: wh |
The 4 games mentioned in the title are some of the most highly rated and well known indie games ever. I haven't played any of them except Cuphead yet but I think this game deserves to be up there too. It's a bit disappointing that those games came out and made large impacts on the industry but this game that almost feels like a AAA title doesn't reach that level. Especially because it's a very high quality indie title like those games.
CrossCode IS a fairly popular indie game for sure but I just wish it made as much of an impact as those games did.
Hello climbers!
I have recently joined the streaming community of Celeste. Every interaction I have had has been so positive and I am so thankful to EXOK and everyone here. However, when I was searching twitch for some first playthroughs, I have run into a particular community member who has left me irked. They are saying things in stream/making claims that don't add up. I will admit that I don't know too many high level players, so these claims can be possible, but wanted to get some more input here.
Claims: 300+ hours, 202 berries and can "consistently" get FW golden.
Contradictions (IMO): Stated that they didn't remember the main route for chapter 5, thought they needed to activate dream blocks for 2A heart, couldn't remember where 4A heart was.
Do you think they are lying? Is it possible to have so many achievements and time played in Celeste and not know this game like the back of their hand? My defenses towards them are maybe they completed game and went to modding community, so maybe they forgot main game because of how much content is in the modding community. I am just looking for validation, because they will CONSTANTLY humble brag to these brand new players about "how much harder the game gets" and "remember, i have done this", instead of just letting these new players enjoy their first climb and naturally get better. IDK why im so pressed about it honestly.
TLDR: player is claiming to be great celeste player in chat and i big mad about it.
Edit: it wasnβt my stream. Itβs two new players that Iβm watching. Iβm just whining because he has been taking the joy away from the stream for me, personally. If I get too annoyed, I just stop watching.
