A list of puns related to "Bookselling"
I have worked with people who go from being editors, as well as assistants, to working in bookstores earning barely above minimum wage in one of the most expensive cities in the world. I'm just wondering what are the typical reasons for making that decision, especially when bookstore work is labor-intensive, you're on your feet all day, and it's sometimes dysfunctional. I've never had the guts to ask the people directly as it may seem like an insult! Would be curious what your opinions are. (I have my own ideas but I could be wrong on them.)
I've been selling books on Depop for a few months now and have made about $100 total. Has anyone else had any more success and what are some tips you'd like to share?
I have hundreds of books listed but have only sold about 15. Recently I've tried creating bundles from items in my shop and giving the option to buy more books for less but I haven't seemed to get any more sales from that. I'd love to do this more full time but not sure how I can make it more profitable.
(Re)posting this here because I was basically mocked for it over at r/flipping lol
But I've added to my question and also wanted to share my experience with this new community.
My friend, a long-time bookseller (specifically textbooks from colleges), recently started an Amazon FBA business and brought me along. He handles most of the processing (listing/pricing/etc). I have mostly just been a buyer and have been trying to consistently add to the inventory I've only been at it for about 2 weeks; in that time I've pulled in 260 books from various thrift stores and 1 book sale. (Update: 333 books in 3 weeks)
I'm really enjoying it, but I'm curious of the sustainability. How long before the market is too saturated and there are too many booksellers out there scanning? We usually come across 5-8 other sellers per book sale, and will occasionally see another seller while out at thrift stores; That or it will be clear that another seller had been there recently (lack of profitable books, stickers peeled back, etc.)
I've also recently read that many Goodwills & thrift stores scan their inventory before putting it on the shelves. That alone could sink this business IMO. Although it was my understanding that Goodwill isn't allowed to do this? - Does anyone have insight on that?
The reason I ask all of this is because this is currently just a side gig for me. I work full-time in local government. But I know my partner wants to build this thing and make it a full-time thing for both of us. So I'm curious if anyone has an outlook on the long-term profitability of this ?
Thanks in advance!
Here's an exciting new development. At the London Bookfair next week, booksellers will agree on codes for marketing and displaying books, so, for example, my history book on Strongbow is NHDG (European History: The Normans), 1DDR (Ireland), 3KL-IE-N (Norman Ireland (1169 to c1350). There is a proposal to add LitRPG to two categories: 405 and 2546. It's great that trad booksellers have noticed the genre and want to find a place for it. I've been talking to a publisher involved and explained that LitRPG is not the same as Fighting Fantasy (which is how they seem to want to categorise it in 405). Anyway, this reflects reader demand. It's another step on the way to LitRPG conquering the world of publishing!
THEMA codes for publications, 405, 'game related' to add Literary Role Playing Game
THEMA code 2546 Role-playing, wargames and fantasy sports, to add LitRPG

Hey everyone,
I know perhaps this is not the place to post it, but I have an e-commerce website Bookish Santa (www.bookishsanta.com) where I sell books with deliveries across India. We started recently and we're doing good untill lockdown hit us. Now with restrictions for non essential commodities being lifted, does this mean I can ship my books again ? I am asking this question because my warehouse is based out of Delhi and Delhi is almost a total red zone. Lack of social distancing is not an issue, since my team has only two members and we stay together. Any guidance?

They're big on education here. You can study to be a bookseller for one or two years, and become a licensed professional. I find that to be ineffably cool.
