As a big fan of the show (currently on my 15th binge in preparation for Season 6, by the way) and a total newcomer to the books, I always found it strange as to why a great deal of y'all disliked Ashford so much. I was under the assumption going into the novels that book charachers were more or less like their show counterparts, just either expanded upon or were, for the lack of a better term, like how Drummer's arc in the show was.
And then I came across Sam Rosenberg in Leviathan Wakes... oh boy...
Her character instantly became one of my favorites, even above most of the main cast. From her looks to her giddy, energetic personality and especially her interactions with the Rocinante's crew. I think her most memorable line to me was what she said in Caliban's War to Holden when they got back from Ganymede, along the lines of, "If I find out you did something shitty to [Naomi], I'm using this [wrench] on your dick!"
And then Abbadon's Gate came along in my audiobook listening/reading list... :(
Ashford was a total prick from the very beginning. His treatment of Bull, Sam, and Pa was uncalled for. He even wanted to refuse aid to those who were injured in the Slow Zone incident and was a totally controlling dictator. Just a straight up mustache twirling villain. And Sam tried to delay him for hours when he tried to use the Behemoth's comm laser, and then he shot her in the head,, right on the bridge when Ruiz offered a less time consuming solution.
That death like, broke me right there on the spot. I was practically crying along with Bull and company when they found out next the next chapter what happened to poor Sam. I screamed in my car like the one dude in the ending to The Mist and probably looked insane to the others I was stuck in traffic with. :P
Man, it did not help that in Nemesis Games and Babylon's Ashes how much the Roci crew and Michio Pa miss Sam. Gotta give props to the showrunners and to David Strathairn for such a major turnaround for the character's depiction in the TV series!
It's a local place that's been there forever yet I don't know a single person that has been there or even mentioned that place as a suggestion during my whole life living here. everyone usually refers others in the area to taste of texas, perry's, or somewhere in City Center.
Does anyone know if it's good? It can't be bad if it's been there that long, right?

edit Having looked into the hotel, it seems they are hosting many Afghan refugees. It also seems that they have been inundated with donations of food and clothing from the local people. So weโre not all horrible small minded xenophobes! :)
Hello, long time lurker here!
I just fell in love with spinning with my drop spindle and found this Ashford Traditional for a good price locally. Pictures from the ad: https://imgur.com/a/z4U2ZuI
I would guess it as a 1983-or-something single-drive Ashford. I got the sudden opportunity to visit the seller today/tommorow evening and check the wheel out. But as this would be my first wheel i have no idea what exactly to look out for. I looked at a few videos how to get an idea what to test for, but I'm still unsure.
There doesn't seem to be any missing parts and only one bobbin. The seller said it was oiled recently and that the wheel is running a little wobbly.

I can and will test drive her with yarn before buying. With your help I now know to take a good look at the condition oft the hub, besides looking at all the movable parts. I will update the post again after seeing the wheel, but will of course read every answer until then :)
Update: The stress of Christmas let me forget to update this post. For the ones still interested, if there are even is anyone. I got the wheel and could cut down on the price, bc of the missing bobbins and lazy cate and the fact that the one bobbin is not original. I oiled it again with linseed oil, the wood was still really dry and creaky. The wobble (a figure eight) is because of a past hub repair, where the hub did got screwed together and not glued. The dry wood did its thing and it developed a gap. With the help of my uncle, who build furniture for a living, I'll put the screws out and glue the poor hub again. Just need to wait fir the spare metal rod. This was all, can't wait to get started next month. Happy New year guys and thanks again :)

Then again, it is kind of interesting to have a character who is talked about and whose relatives have been characters on the show for many years, but he himself has never been seen.
The Ashford theory is the theory that Sansa will be married to (f)Aegon because all her previous marriages and suitors fit those of Lady Ashfords, who during a toruney had a Baratheon, Tyrrell, Lannister, Hardyng and Targaryen suitor. With the last one left for Sansa being Targaryen. The theory is a bit controversial and it has been debated a lot, but here's why I think it's true.

House Hardyng is a small and obscure house, GRRM obviously wrote them there as at least a reference to Sansa.

Aegon is a character that was introduced in book 5, many people feel like he came out of nowhere and he is in a position to have a big role in the upcoming books, it's likely that he will take the throne and having a character that we know from the start be connected to him would actually give us a bigger reason to care about his story.

It would fit the original role for Sansa's character, who was planned to be against her family and married to Joeffry, now just replace Joeffry with Aegon, who the other Starks will likely be on opposite sides from.

Aegon choosing Sansa over Arianne would mirror Rhaegar choosing Lyanna, choosing either of them over Dany would doom him and show that Varys' plan for the perfect prince was flawed.

The show, where Sansa and Dany are enemies and hate eachother for no reason, although the last seasons will be very different from the books, the show did still try to at least reference or parallel things that happen in the books, like Ramsay's letter, Euron killing a dragon, Yara being Euron's prisoner etc. I think this is one of those things.

A lot of people say that Lady Ashford's suitors are not the same as Sansa's, because Joeffry isn't a real Baratheon, there was no Arryn at Ashford etc. But I think that proves it even more because when GRRM makes references like that, he doesn't make it a 100% copy, just something that people would figure out if they think about it a bit.
I went to the driving range at Marti Golf Center wearing a mask. Now first of all, I don't have any qualms with those who chose not to use them - I personally want to use them to protect me and especially my wife (expecting our first child!). Again, this isn't a comment on freedoms or anything - for me, it's your choice but understand my right to bear masks. I entered the trailer and the person behind the counter (owner?) immediately told me:"I do not allow masks in here."I was a bit taken back but my reply was "uh, really? I mean I don't care if you don't want to use one but I.."He cut me off with "I don't care, leave or take off the mask. I have to constantly pick them up off the grounds and they wreck equipment."
"I just don't want to get sick," I said "Just trying to protect me and my wife, she's pregnant and I want to take extra care""I don't care," was his response. "COVID is a bunch of BS and anyways I'm not sick."
That was my interaction with them. If you look them up on Google reviews, you'll see a recent similar incident with a father and his 7 yr old. To me, this is a bit out of hand and raises a few points: 1. I understand the aggravation of picking up trash on your property but there are gatorade/water bottles everywhere (not in bins) - it's annoying- but what does that have to do with masks inside the shop trailer? I wore my mask outside and there wasn't a fuss. 2. In the Google review, the owner posted a reply saying this wasn't a political thing but that it was about FREEDOMS (his use of caps lock not mine) and also mentioned COVID BS. Come on, let's be honest, this isn't about a trash policy - it is a statement.
Ultimately for me, Cinco Ranch is equidistant and the cost is the same so I'll just go there. But I felt compelled to post this to make others aware so they can make judgments themselves.

Just in case, the theory I'm talking about is that the champions of the tournament for Lady Ashford, as described in "The Hedge Knight", foreshadow Sansa's romantic life. A Baratheon, Lyonel/Joffrey, a Tyrell, Leo/Willas, a Lannister, Tybolt/Tyrion, a Hardying, Humfrey/Harry and a Targaryen. It could be just a coincidence, or it could be more.
