Amyotrophy Puns

I’ve been going through trying to diagnose why I can’t walk up stairs / go from sitting to standing etc. for years at this point with no conclusive answers with extensive testing (and I mean EXTENSIVE). Only wbc in my spinal fluid and upper thighs & biceps had findings on EMG.

Just wondering if anyone has it and what your symptoms were / how you are treating etc. I have a 2 year old son and really really need to get to the bottom of it if this is it.

I was diagnosed with monomelic amyotrophy about a year ago and I was wondering if anyone has had any success with any treatment options . Trying to stay hopefully that I can at least regain some function as this whole thing is still very new and hard for me

I've been contemplating writing about my own story. I have a wild dream that we can find a cure for ourselves in sharing details about our situations. I've been doing some research on what blogs and subreddits people have written about atrophies on. Thanks to Shaydpengiunman for starting this sub.

I have monomelic amyotrophy aka benign focal amyotrophy. It started with a tremor in the hands at 18, weakened my forearm muscle through 22-25 years old, and plateaued. I don't think it's gotten any worse but feels worse in the winter. It has crippled my hands slightly. My fingers are curled in and weak. My neurologist at Hopkins says the myelin sheath has depleted on my motor nerves killing the chance for muscle growth, causing the muscle to be unable to retain its average strength.

I have my own suspicions about what make it worse or keeps the sheath from regenerating. Sometimes I think working out has worsened the strength in my arms but that could just be a temporary thing, haven't been able to tell.

Is there anything that could jump-start the re-production of the mylein sheath on the motor nerves? Is there an herbal remedy, vitamin, type of food that could help? I don't know. Has anyone out there in a similar situation found anything that has helped? Anyone participated in stem cell therapy trials or heard if they've worked?

Tout commence début 2020. Alors que nous entrons tous dans un mode de vie étrange, ma femme et moi sommes très occupés à élever nos deux adorables jeunes enfants.

Notre fille de 14 mois, qui semblait en parfaite santé l'année précédente, ne fait plus de progrès en motricité, depuis plusieurs mois. Nous ne voyons même pas qu'elle régresse : elle ne parvient plus à faire du quatre pattes, ni à lever les pieds au ciel lorsqu'elle est allongée. Nous nous disons "boarf, les progrès sont variables d'un enfant à l'autre, elle va bientôt marcher !". La pédiatre est très occupée par le Covid, elle doit reporter des consultations. Lorsque nous la voyons enfin, elle nous demande de faire des analyses à l'hôpital. Nous ne stressons pas du tout. Lors d'une balade, mon père me dit "ma petite fille bouge de façon bizarre, j'espère qu'elle n'a pas une myopathie !". Nous en rions. Nous ne savons pas ce qu'est une myopathie, notre fille est normale, elle est le rayon de soleil de notre vie.

Les analyses débutent. Elles sont assez lourdes : IRM avec somnifère inefficace, puis "électromyogramme" : décharges électriques envoyés dans le corps pour mesurer la réactivité des muscles, très douloureuses. Plusieurs semaines plus tard, nous recevons un courrier de l'hôpital : "analyse génétique à faire, suspicion de SMA".

Nous recherchons "SMA" sur internet, c'est l'apocalypse. Apparemment il s'agit d'une terrible maladie génétique, extrêmement handicapante, qui touche l'ensemble des muscles mais pas du tout les capacités cérébrales. Les patients n'arrivent plus à marcher, à se lever. Pire, leur état s'aggrave avec les années qui passent. Leur corps est très déformé, ils ne parviennent alors plus à respirer, à avaler, à digérer, à aller aux toilettes, à tenir leur colonne vertébrale, à bouger leurs mains. Leur vie semble être un cauchemar continu. Ils meurent jeunes, très souvent d'insuffisance respiratoire. Nous sommes choqués, je suis en arrêt maladie, cloué au lit. Qu'une chose si horrible puisse arriver, et de plus à une petite fille de même pas 2 ans, celle qui est notre sang. Cela est extrêmement difficile à accepter, la vie prend un goût très amer.

Quelques semaines plus tard, alors que notre fille s'affaiblit de plus en plus et ne parvient même plus à pousser sur ses bras pour lever la tête, nous recevons le résultat de l'analyse génétique. L'amyotrophie spinale infantile (SMA en anglais) est confirmée. Les médecins parlent d'une maladie "sévère", "qui évolue". Il y avait

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
