A list of puns related to "American Pioneer"
I just read βPioneer Women: The Lives of Women on the Frontierβ by Linda Peavy and Ursula Smith. It discusses and quotes from letters and journal entries of women who went out west following their husbands. In particular it describes the hardships they faced while establishing a home on the frontier.
I read stories of families going to places like Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota, etc. I wonder though - how or why did they choose a particular place?
Aside from the gold rush, clearly many went in search of farmable land. So then do we know how they chose a particular piece of land in a particular state?
Thereβs been a large conversation surrounding race and the Boston Celtics as of late.
I just thought Iβd make a post to shed light on how the Celtics as a franchise, despite being located in a city thatβs had race-related issues for a long time, have been a pioneer in breaking these barriers as early as the 1950s.
THE BOSTON CELTICS WERE THE FIRST TEAM IN NBA HISTORY TO DRAFT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PLAYER TO THEIR ROSTER
Prior to 1950, not a single Africa American had played in the NBA. In the 1950 draft, Chuck Cooper, Nat Clifton & Earl Lloyd were the first 3 black men to be drafted into the NBA.
Chuck Cooper was selected as the 14th Pick in Round 2 by the Celtics with Auerbach at the helm thus breaking the colour barrier in the NBA.
The 3 of them went on to champion and fight for the rights of African American athletes in the sport.
THE BOSTON CELTICS WERE THE FIRST TEAM IN NBA HISTORY TO FIELD AN ALL BLACK STARTING LINEUP
In 1964, leading up to a game against the St Louis Hawks, the late great Timmy Heinsohn was injured, recently acquired Willie Naulls took his place in a lineup that featured Sanders, Jones, Perkins & Russell.
In that era, there was a so-called βgentlemenβs agreementβ that acted as an agreement to always have at least one white player on the court at all times, supposedly in the interest of racial harmony. But Auerbach who had broken boundaries a decade earlier by drafting Chuck Cooper, continued to do so by breaking said agreement.
When questioned, Auerbach simply said :
> βThey brought it to my attention later on. All we were trying to do here, all the time, is play the guys that, in our opinion, whether Iβm coaching or someone else is coaching, is going to win the ballgame,β he said. βThatβs all.β
THE BOSTON CELTICS WERE THE FIRST TEAM IN NBA HISTORY TO APPOINT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN HEAD COACH
In 1966 when Auerbach retired, Boston appointed Bill Russell as its head coach, becoming the first Black head coach in not only the history of the NBA but the history American pro sports.
The Celtics since then have gone on to have 3 African American Head Coaches in KC Jones, M.L Carr & Doc Rivers.
Of the 6 African American Coaches that have won an NBA Title, HALF of them were coached the Boston Celtics (Bill Russell, K.C Jones & Doc Rivers)
Also interesting to note that the 2008 Celtics together with Doc Rivers as the coach might possibly be the only All Black starting 5 + Coach to win th
... keep reading on reddit β‘I have pointed this out to my TBM family members and it is never appreciated. Why has the American flag been to integrated with Pioneer Day celebrations?
The irony of it allβ¦.
This is from last year but I wasn't aware of this ongoing litigation so I thought I'd share.
