A list of puns related to "Value (ethics)"
A school board in Louisiana appointed a new member yesterday. Arenβt we so lucky to have him.
New Jefferson School Board member, who was at Capitol Jan. 6, told to 'clean up' social media
Article Text: A Metairie businessman's partisan and sometimes profane social media posts taking shots at politicians, Democrats and even teachers drew a warning from a couple of Jefferson Parish School Board members Wednesday nightΒ β and a more heated rebuke on ThursdayΒ β but didn't stop the board from appointing him to an open seat.
The businessman, contractor Rafael Rafidi, was appointed during a special meeting held before Wednesday's regular meeting. Rafidi, who will take the place of Larry Dale, who resigned at the end of last year, was the only candidate who expressed an interest in the job. Board policy says only that a replacement for a board member who leaves shall be completed within 20 days, but does not specify how that person is selected.
Seven members of the nine-member board voted to appoint Rafidi. One, Ricky Johnson, voted against his appointment and another, Simeon Dickerson, abstained.
On Thursday, however, Dickerson said he seek another School Board meeting for a vote to remove Rafidi.
Before the vote was taken, Dickerson and Johnson had pointed questions about Rafidi's statements on social media, where he has posted comments disdainful of the work of teachers and attacked politicians with foul language for their perceived disloyalty to former President Donald Trump.
For instance, in February 2021, Rafidi replied to a tweet from former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, in which Landrieu praised U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy for voting to impeach Trump and called U.S. Sen. John Kennedy "an embarrassment" for voting against impeachment. "Go f--k yourselves," Rafidi replied. In another tweet,Β he called Cassidy a "piece of s--t". He called Landrieu a "f-----g traitor."
In this screenshot of since-deleted Tweets, new Jefferson Parish School Board member Rafael Rafidi comments about U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy and former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. NOLA.com has blacked out the profanities.
Rafidi's social media doesn't say whether he went inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but it does say he was at the Stop the Steal Rally and walked over to the Capitol.Β "I was there, heard the entire speech and walked peacefully with thousands singing God bless America and

If you were to prioritize key attributes to a clothing item you plan to buy, how would you rank these four areas?
Form: this includes the design, style, fit, branding, etc
Function: this includes comfort, number of features such as pockets, breathability, water resistance, etc
Ethics: this takes into consideration things that went into its production such as its impact on the environment or animals, its relationship to the people who made it, etc
Value: the actual price/cost of the item
In my case..
when I was young.. I'd probably prioritize them in the order of
1 Form
2 Value
3 Function
4 Ethics.
nowadays I would prioritize them as
1 Function
2 Ethics
3 Form
4 Value
As I got older, I realized that while trendy and especially flashier pieces were nice.. I got bored of them rather quickly. More basic pieces, ended up getting used more in my wardrobe. Not too exciting but not too boring either. I could end up making them more interesting through layering and matching instead. I also focused more on texture and subtle design elements rather than something very flashy.
but overall I feel like I prioritized function above all. As I got older, I have to carry more stuff. I wanted a smaller wardrobe and closet, so I wanted items that could be used flexibly. In the last 10-15 years, we are now seeing all kinds of merger of technologies from sports with casual and business wear, resulting in clothes that dry quickly, are stretchier, and generally more comfortable to wear. I personally really enjoy these clothes as I can go to the office and feel very comfortable in business-casual clothes, while winter jackets are now getting both warmer and lighter.
Second would be Ethics, for example I now tend to look at where the item was made. was the down responsibly sourced? the plastic recycled? etc. I don't do this all the time, as sometimes i can't find the information, or am honestly in a rush to buy something without looking into too much detail. But I have made more efforts to examine the content more. I feel as a result of the increased prioritization in function and ethnics, I find myself shifting more to brands that either promote such things and/or are more transparent. These tends to be outdoor brands.
finally Form and Value. As mentioned, I'm getting older and don't really care about keeping up to date with trends that change every 1 or 2 years. Also many of those brands that do specialize in

I would like to state first and foremost, I obviously believe that this woman should be able to coach lacrosse at any school in the country, but I find it shocking that people are expecting Catholic institutions to change from the inside.
If people simply want a total unitarian religious experience, you can do that absolutely anywhere on the planet. You do not need churches, you don't need community, if someone wants to pray with you, you are in touch with God. It's all on the honor system.
It is only with a value system that religion can exist in the first place. If there is no value or ethical system, what is the point? Again, to labor the point, I don't agree with the Catholic institution firing a lesbian, but the values of the institution totally disagree with her livelihood. How do you expect to honor both sides of the coin?
It's impossible. I understand that modernity has brought about ignoring certain Old Testament principles. People are hoping for that narrative to take over in the Catholic Church. But again, where do you draw that line? She can pray, go to any church in the world, and this lacrosse wants to work for the institution that believes she's going to hell for being a lesbian.
The Catholic people supporting her in this wrong seem totally lost on what they represent. You do not represent the values of your church, therefore are you really a member?
Before I became interested in Buddhism I briefly studied philosophy. A lot of it struck me as tedious categorization and logic chopping between different ethical schools (utilitarianism, consequentialism, etc.) that only represented (in my opinion) partial truths or views.
Western ethics is also very much founded in the Classical idea that moral virtue derived from manβs reason and intellect. There's little talk about compassion and love, itβs mostly rationalizations of sufferance avoidance and talk of abstract virtues and principles. This strikes me as a cold, incomplete view but maybe Iβm over generalizing.
I think pure reason can slip into instrumental rather than selfless action if itβs the foundation of your moral actions. Maybe in macro-scale cases where you need to allocate relief to displaced migrants or something reason and planning are useful but in daily life, that type of pervasive intellectualism seems to run counter to what Iβve reading in Buddhist texts.
An example is "Puella Magi Madoka Magica", which, by the way, I absolutely adore. The characters there don't do much in the first 4 episodes or so, but at the same time, they realize how the world (and theirs) suck. It's a shame, really, that of the three movies made alongside the TV series, the first two are recaps. RECAPS. My god.
I (F) feel useless to our society. Iβm 24, I have my BFA, and I work for minimum wage at a coffee place. Itβs mentally and physically exhausting for me, who would rather be working at home on my small business (which is literally VERY small. I make a few extra bucks a month).
Thatβs what I want to do - build my store up and work from my home. But I canβt live that way and thereβs no telling how long itβll take for me to be able to make a living off of it. I feel so useless and like something went wrong in my head to not make me like everyone who just works and accepts it.
Any advice from anyone in a similar place or who has been in a similar place?
Sums it up. And then these companies complain about how "NOBODY WANTS TO WORK ANYMORE."
My employer has made BILLIONS the last couple of years. Meanwhile we suffer with inflation and cost of living. They also increased our goals last year with no increase in pay. Go figure.
Growing up, I was told "work hard. It always pays off." I always work hard but end up paying the "competent tax."
Time to start applying for new jobs. Time to find who my next owner will be. Fuck employers and this GREED. Fuck the right wing for making us sound like we are the selfish ones for demanding better.

So I am a blackjack card counter as of late, and one of the things which has been weighing on my mind lately is feeling bad when I go to do it. Originally I had the idea that I didn't want to lose money to the casino and could make quite a bit off counting. Now that I've had some time to think about it, it sort of feels like stealing. I mean the casino is providing a safe environment, waitresses who bring you water, a place to sit on their chairs and depreciate them etc etc etc. It makes sense to me now that you should lose a small amount of money on average at the tables, hell they even do it in a way where you might get really lucky and walk away hundreds of dollars up.
On the other hand, as a card counter, I'm essentially going to the casino and getting all of this for free knowingly, and also taking a wage from them with little risk to myself. In fact, they are actively looking for me and would kick me out if they knew because they don't want to voluntarily do transactions with an individual like me who is card counting.
Given that I see myself as essentially stealing from the Casino, I've been thinking about stopping, and it's making me question whether I'm just not cut out for the ruthlessness of the world. Idk if I should feel guilty about stealing or if I should feel smart for being able to pull one over on them. I feel a little bit like a parasite, but there are plenty of parasites in the world species wise, so idk if that is necessarily a bad thing. Parasites don't question themselves and we are just animals afterall.
It seems like I'd have guilt and it limits my ability to connect with others because I always have to lie about card counting especially around people who might own casino's etc, because they would hold resentment and a desire to be get their due. And I imagine all theft is this way, because when you take from someone they hold a desire to get revenge, and with revenge ever present you can't be yourself with others anymore. Furthermore, if you tout it about yourself, people won't want to do business with you as much anymore because they think you'll just steal behind their back. But maybe everyone steals behind their back and its just the cost/risk of doing business.
That's my opinion by the way, all the business men/women whom I have seen or met have mastered dealing with people. Yes, that's ok, but in business we always look for our profit, we don't bother how our actions are going to influence the others. They use other people for their own welfare and even connect with people just for the sake of give and take (that's imbalanced most of the times). There is no feeling there. I think this is the key to flourish someone's business otherwise he'll be in loss.
In ethics thereβs commonly a βdeontologistβ way of thinking, which defines βthis is good and this is badβ, and thereβs a consequentialist way of thinking, which decides whatβs good and bad depending on the consecuentes of the actions we take. Most vegans that I know who study ethics, are usually consequentialists, like in the book of peter singer βanimal liberationβ. And derived from consecuentialist thereβs βsentiocentrismβ, which for me is the actually ethical root of all my causes and behaviors. Sentiocentrism focuses on the interests of sentient beings as the only moral relevant thing, because only sentient beings, and all sentient beings, have interests that can be violated or respected. If you look it this way, no matter what species, race, gender or nationality someone is, everyone deserves the same moral consideration, and this is the key part, because equal moral consideration doesnβt mean equal worth of value, which are totally arbitrary terms (what defines the value of something? their ecological value?, economical value?, cultural value?). Bees or ants have thouthands of times more ecological value than humans, because they maintain ecosystems while we destroy them. A human can have thouthands of times more cultural or knowledge value than any other animal, and an elephant thusk can have an economical value for some people, higher than the value they give to the life of the animal. And the most amazing thing: even the most speciesist person can give more emotional value to their dogs, than the value of hundreds of human peopleβs lives and lots of money, when paying for an extremely expensive surgery for their dogs, when they could keep that money for themselves or donate it to save hundreds of people in poor countries from starvation or a cheap malaria vaccine. The value we give to others is relative to each person, and for that reason, we we study ethics we should analize individual interests, instead of values. So, to sum up, to analyze actions we consider immoral, we should study the interests that are not compatible between one sentient being and another, and not the βvalueβ of each sentient being, because itβs arbitrary and irrelevant. Example: if we analyze the morality of eating meat, we donβt have to compare the βvalueβ of a human being to the βvalueβ of a cow, we should analyze the interests that are incompatible, which is the interest of the cow to live and not suffer, to the interest of the human to have a certain taste in their mo

First and foremost, let me say that I am not a therapist, or a trained professional in the fields of psychology, social work, or therapy of any kind. I do however have a great team in my current therapist, and my current psychiatrist, who I've been seeing for about a year at this point. I have struggled for roughly a decade with a creeping pornography addiction (occurred over a 10 year period, beginning at 12 or 13 years of age when I was first exposed to porn) that recently escalated into an unmanaged and under-analyzed exhibitionist kink (within the last 3 years). I will say, that I don't believe that these things are inherently immoral, harmful, or "bad", but I do think that for a LOT of people, they are, and can be. This is especially true for men, because of the fact that 1) itβs always been more socially acceptable for men to gloss over their individual responsibility to determine and live by their ethics in general (for some stupid fucking reason), and in regards with sex especially, and 2) society is at a tipping point where viewing porn is fairly widely accepted in all sexual orientations, gender identities, and social spheres, minus most religious ones (80% of people surveyed do it), which serves to paint it as benign. This is obviously also not inherently true, because of the fact that no one ever discusses it to any depth. Usually just a brief, "everybody watches porn", even if you go to someone thinking that you may have a problem.
That insidiousness is what led me to reach the point of ruining an
