CW: sad life stuffs......I'm getting blood drawn today, one of the worst things ever to me... It's the only human contact I get since the pandemic tho... I finally got home-visit doctor/nurse thing for my disability that no doctor office has ever accomodated, and the timing is so awful... I'm devastated to be losing it after only a few months and when I actually have something I need to keep getting bloodwork and help with, rather than my usual forced checkups just to get my forever meds... I'm just totally screwed. It was a while back and before the pandemic, but last we knew, doctors were extremely limited there and I might have to drive hours just for checkups/bloodwork. I can't wear a mask or go anywhere with my pain disorders; I just can't. I wish visiting physicians was there SO badly.
I'm completely overwhelmed and worried about packing, traveling, moving, so much change, when I'm doing the worst ever... I need to do so many things and I can't even manage to do most basic tasks, worse than ever right now. Everything is too painful. I can't stop procrastinating and avoiding, even though I know it's making it worse... I know that EVENTUALLY a lot of things are going to be improved, but it's NOT helping me. I know I'm going to suffer so much before it's finally set up and more okay again... My mother keeps telling me not to worry, that it'll all be taken care of and worked out, but I keep

I had someone call into the shop to pay for a costumer's drink before she came in. He gave me her name( I'll call her B) and said it was her birthday. I asked him to describe her and his response was "Oh that's hard. She's brunette and stunningly beautiful." So three brunettes later and "B" walks in, "Yes that's me. How did you know my name?" I respond "Happy birthday, someone called in to pay for your drink." She says "It's not my birthday! People keep wishing me happy birthday! Who called it in?... My husband is playing a prank on me." I told her how he described her and she blushed.... Serious husband goals.

Thanks to so many of you have been sending me unbirthday cards for the special event (in 23 days now). I have opened the cards just to get usernames, and with only a few exceptions, they remain unread and unpeeked.
You all have blown me away with the envelope decorations, sparkles and amount of love sent my way so far.

Compelling & Relevant Storytelling
While this is a fun novel that takes readers back to the colorful and wacky Wonderland, it delves into England during the time as well. Alice is still headstrong and outspoken and challenges the world around her, the sexism, and Wonderland’s ridiculousness. It is what makes her such a wonderful character.
Whisked back to Wonderland, Alice must save her friends who are about to be killed by the Queen of Hearts. In the Great Game, the Queen is stealing from everyone and killing anyone who stands in her way. She must have the most stuff. Ridiculous but utterly fitting for Wonderland standards.
Interestingly, the novel incorporates American McGee’s Alice, Disney’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and the classic tale by Lewis Carroll. It moves at a breathtaking pace, keeping the reader engaged page after page. Braswell also gives the story depth as it provides a commentary on current issues such as racism, immigration, and xenophobia, while also addressing sexism and feminism.
Honestly, Unbirthday is a brilliant novel. That moves effortlessly between Wonderland and England. It keeps the reader engaged both in the political intricacies of England and the absurdity of Wonderland.
Alice has grown so much since her previous incarnation, and it shows in how she addresses Wonderland. However, Braswell also explores Wonderland more, going to the court of the Queen of Clubs. There is so much Wonderland in this novel, and it is fun to read, fun to explore, but there are some dark parts. They balance each other out and encourage Alice to grow and be herself.
Final Thoughts
There is so much about this novel that makes it good that this review probably will not capture. It is colorful but also addresses important issues that are more prevalent today than ever. Unbirthday is a thoughtful and fun novel that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
