It could very well be that immunity to tetanus actually increases effectiveness of the conjugated vaccine. I wasn't able to find information on it.

There is a negative effect, but not enough to actually prevent immunity. Also, it depends on the toxoid that was used. A derivative of diphtheria toxin didn't show a different response after previous diphtheria vaccination.

Take DTap for example. I know you end up getting IgG antibodies against the circulating toxins. However, does this go through a T cell mediated pathway? Or are IgG antibodies produced directly against the toxin.

I don't understand how giving the toxoid itself can produce an immune response strong enough, and do it quickly enough, to protect someone form getting tetanus after they've already been exposed (ie gotten a cut). Wouldn't it be more important to give the tetanus immune globulin, which provides passive immunity and binds the free toxins.
