A list of puns related to "Site of Special Scientific Interest"
I would really like to see some statistics on the sources of the daily top 25 of this subs news sources. You could create an animation with bars of source category counts changing over time. I bet you could see that shift or at least a growing inclusion of main stream media which makes it clearly visible, when the public got to take it seriously. Would be even more interesting on a broader scale, like total count of articles in a selection of sources.
Does anybody know if there already is any data for that? I might look into it, if not.

I consider myself pretty scientifically literate, but I constantly come across people (especially on the internet) who claim that corporate and industrial interests shape the readily-publicly-available body of scientific knowledge (i.e.: "All the funding for AIDS research comes from the pharmaceutical companies, and it's in their best interest to only fund research for treatment, not a cure." or "There's no evidence of genetically modified food being harmful because Monsanto funds all the studies.")
How much of this sentiment is wackadoodle conspiracy theory and how much of it is truth? What kind of safeguards does the "American scientific establishment" have in place to prevent funders' interests from influencing the results of studies, or the publicization of the results of studies, or how much credence is given to a given study when determining policy (such as FDA regulations)?
This American Life has a couple episodes that seem to support the wackadoodles, which is why I ask this question. In this episode they interview two scientists: one who estimates that there is a large amount of natural gas in the United States that we are not taking advantage of, and one who claims that the environmental detriments of extracting this natural gas (esp. through fracking) are very serious. The former's research is heavily funded and publicized; the latter is dismissed and threatened in attempts to shut him up to the point that he leaves his university job.
In Act III of this episode they interview a reporter who claims that the scientific consensus in Europe is that there is a significant link between cell phone use and brain tumors, but the U.S. research doesn't show this because of bias due to research funding coming from cell phone companies.
I am grant writer for a non-profit charity, so I have some inkling of how funding for non-profit institutions like universities works.
DISCLAIMER: this is not an ad, I am just a person with aspergers who has found some fun, interest, and comfort in the exploration of information
Wolfram Alpa is a website and also an app (strongly recommend) which has vast amounts of data and information about pretty much anything you can think of. I have spent hours on this site, and I love to set my computer to use the random function on startup.
Itβs a really great tool to explore your special interests with, and also if you are a student taking any kind of math/physics it can really help you out (thatβs how I originally discovered it)
Just always remember, never be ashamed of your special interests and the way them make you feel! You are you and you are beautiful. Happy exploring!!
My presentation tonight regards the wondrous phenomena of Akali-Kar and our ongoing research venture on that most fascinating of desert planes. You can learn something of the basic background of this plane in other articles
Ahem, now I realise that the planar study grants review board is tired from an afternoon of submissions but if I mightβ¦

Yes, as I was saying, Akali-Kar is a fascinating world with a tragic past well worth this institutes time and investment. I want to take you through a sampling of some of the scientific wonders of Akali-Karβs natural history to show the benefits of continued financial support for m-... our research teams.
Akali-Kar is a large prime material plane devastated by a conflict known as the hundred generations war which annihilated and transformed many of the pre-existing ecosystems. For the most part it is a desert world with the standard array of desert terrains found throughout the planarverse. However in one particular region- larger than many planes! It boasts a fuller, lusher ecology.
Now Akali-Kar is a rich and diverse world. What we know about it could fill encyclopaedias. What we donβt know about it could fill a library of libraries. It is thus necessary to narrow down the subject matter. I will be talking exclusively about the natural history of Akali-Kar, not itβs sociology, itβs tragic history or the strange arcane phenomena which seem to make wizardry more difficult there. Weβll be talking about the natural desert regions exclusively, and within that subsection I will only be talking about a handful of biomes selected for their utter uniqueness across the known planarverse. In doing so I hope to refute the claims of certain jealous βcolleaguesβ that βThe whole place is just bloody sandβ. While that might be true for certain inadequate gazes and minds, I hope to show that for discerning gents and ladies such as ourselves there is a great deal worth looking at.
Please though, do not imagine this grant application to be definitive! It is merely a sampling of topics of special interest, chosen as much out of personal passion as anything. It is difficult to turn left or right on Akali-Kar without finding something of natural or eldritch significance.

There are a lot of small special interest sites which do not offer their inventory programmaticaly. But plenty of them would be quite interesting for the enterprise I work for... it's no option to buy inventory and send creatives separately each time I plan a campaign for my business. But I was thinking of the possibility to set up a kind of "own little special interest network" based on programmatic technology. Thus I just had to make a deal once with each of those small sites and then could change creatives and buy inventory much more efficently every time a plan a new campaign.
Most of the owners of such sites don't have much knowhow, so I think I'd have to empower them. We do have the whole DoubleClick Stack, so I was thinking of possibilities how to "build" a network with this infrastructure...
Do you see any possibility how I could manage to build my own network? We have the whole DoubleClick Stack... so, for example, would it be possible to integrate each of those sites with DFP and then buy the ad space with DBM? Or is there another solution with DBM?
Thanks for tips and ideas
I feel like I can't never anchor to one specific special interest. Like one day I might get interested in a topic and hyperfixate to it. But within a few days (or even a few hours) I'd lose interest completely and end up not learning anything. I have ADHD which I suspect might be the cause of this. Are there anyone like that?
i've never seen anyone talk about this but i feel like i have a few special interests that i don't think and talk about as much as my other ones, but they still give me just as much happiness as all the others. like one of my special interests is doll collecting but i don't think about it as much as my interests in autism and politics because those affect my daily life a lot more. is this just me? lol
UPDATE: I added the first home game for each team and the opponent thanks to the data supplied by waterboy100.
UPDATE 2: Fixed an error where some of the teams showed the wrong information for the first home game. Thanks to 05caniffa!
So, I put up that little web site How Many Days until Hockey and here is the non-scientific data that comes out of it.
NHL gets the most because it is the default page so everyone goes through there or stops there if they want (or there's quite a bit of BOT traffic).

If you think about how these in game currencies work, the idea of replacing them with a blockchain alternative doesn't seem to be too distant. Crosstrading is a rather niche video game market, where for example users from OSRS or similar titles might trade in game currencies for those from another game. It's quite a popular concept in the PBBRPG genre.
I can see game companies such as Epic Games, Ubisoft, EA etc creating their own native token allowing for the purchase of in game items for this token. Earning tokens through in game events or ranked play etc. This would be important as it will allow users to get more familiar with how crypto works leading to more acceptance and less fear over the system.
As I also mentioned, livestreaming services may also be the next to adopt the crypto currency allowing users to donate to their tokens to their favorite streamer and perhaps earning rewards for engagement.
Jumping straight forward to financial institutions adopting crypto is unlikely, the platform will require smaller scale adoptions that create a snowball effect into mainstream adoption.
