Why is the RMS Titanic's sinking so talked of, when there are hundreds of maritime disasters in history?

I don't quite understand the obsession with the Titanic when it comes to maritime disasters in history. If you look at the peacetime maritime disasters page on Wikipedia, there are hundreds of them, listed that happened. Some of these have more casualties than the Titanic.
