A list of puns related to "Saturn's Inuit group of satellites"
Sometimes some of these posts are a little offensive, sometimes they feel exploitative, or just plain rude. Sometimes these posts are way way way out there (I'm looking at you "authors" who like to "borrow" from Indigenous spiritualities and world views). It's just kind of weird, and none of the other Indigenous subreddits I follow to are like this. I dunno, I just wish we had more Inuit posting here and less qallunaat who make us feel like we are being studied. (If you have to look up the word qallunaat, do you really belong in this sub?)
Hey Guys! You may have heard that 20 new moons have been discovered orbiting Saturn. The organisation that discovered them (Carnegie Science) is running a contest where the public get to name all 20 of the new moons.
Now two of these new moons were discovered within an existing group of moons known as the "Inuit Group" where all five moons within it are named after Giants from Inuit mythology.
So, continuing with this trend, the two new moons into the group must be named after Giants from Inuit Mythology. Meaning you can submit a name into the contest and you could actually say you helped name a moon of the solar system.
Here's a video about the rules of the Contest and how to enter
In short, tweet the name of a Giant from Inuit Mythology to @SaturnLunacy (just make sure the name already hasn't been taken) and also include the hashtag #NameSaturnsMoons
I figured this is something you guys may be interested in :)
(I've already submitted the name Amarok)
I only know of Ganymede being referred to as the "Jupiter of Jupiter" in this original naming scheme, but I can't find any resources listing what the others were originally named.
If Ganymede was the "Jupiter of Jupiter" then which satellites were the Saturn, Venus, and Mercury?
I want to bet that Ganymede might have been the "Mercury of Jupiter" because of it's size, but I'd love to know if there's an actual chart with this information preserved.
You cannot have your kayak and heat it too.
