A list of puns related to "Semi Major Axis"
When list on the planet editor tutorial page, under orbit data (https://spaceflight-simulator.fandom.com/wiki/Planet_Editor_Tutorial#Orbit_Data), it uses Earth as an example and lists it semi-major axis as 7,480,000,000. But under Earth's own wiki page (https://spaceflight-simulator.fandom.com/wiki/Earth), it list the "orbit radius" or semi-major axis as 2,992,000,000. it seems that you have to divide the orbit radius by 4 then multiply by 10 to get the number listed in the planet editor. Why is the orbit radius not the semi-major axis?
I created the following plot when I was messing about with the exoplanet data from exoplanets.org. It seems to me to form three distinct groups of data. Why are there gaps between the groups in which we don't seem to have found many exoplanets? Is this due to the instruments used or discovery techniques or are we focussing on finding those with a specific mass and semi major axis?
Yeah, just that.
I realize I might need more than that to do the orbit justice but here's where I am so far.
Given the semi-major axis (a) and the eccentricity (e) I can find the semi-minor axis (b):
b = a * sqrt(1 - e^2)
With both a and b I can draw an ellipse representing the orbit of the object. I can also calculate the foci (f [distance from cener]) to represent the Sun:
f = sqrt(a^2 - b^2)
But this doesn't take into account the inclination of the orbit (i). To represent this, my guess would be to calculate a new semi-major axis (a2)
a2 = a * cos(i)
and redraw the ellipse with the original semi-minor axis and redraw the sun with the focus of the new ellipse.
Would this be accurate? If not, what other data points would I need to more accurately model this?
If I told an astronomer the value of the semi-major axis, it still doesn't tell him much, does it? He needs to know the eccentricity as well, no? Why not just use apoapsis + periapsis + eccentricity and that gives a good picture? Is semi-major axis used to get a rough idea?
I've been working on a program to simulate keplerian orbits, which are all conic sections, and one of the problems I'm coming across is trying to find the velocity vector of the satellite given the keplerian elements of the orbit, the three important ones for this problem are the eccentricity, semi-major axis, and true anomaly (the angle I referred to in the title.) I know the magnitude of the velocity from the vis-visa equation, but I still need the direction in the form of a unit vector, which will be tangent to the conic section at the point the satellite is at. I just don't know a formula for finding it.
When there's only 2 bodies in the system, a planet and sun, for example, will the points at which the Semi-Major axis intersects the orbit also be at the same place as the Aphelion and Perihelion?
Let's say a spacecraft is orbiting the earth in a circular orbit. If we increase the velocity (βv) of the spacecraft in a direction perpendicular to its motion, how would that affect the semi-major axis of the orbit?
Drawing it out, I think it increases, but I don't know the equation that would govern this behavior. Also can I say that the increase in the semi-major axis is equal to the increase if βv is applied parallel to the satellite's direction of motion because of conservation of energy?
Also wondering what they do to an orbit from an energy perspective. Thanks!
Everyone knows this equation:
r = H^2 / (u + Bcos(theta))
where H = p (Semilatus rectum) , and u = GM. B is a constant vector you get from integration.
You may argue that to prove GM = semi major axis... you just go:
H^2 / (u - B) + H^2 / (u + B) / 2 = u !... BUT! For this to be true then B/u must equal sqrt(1 - H^2 /u^2 ) ...
I will agree that B/u = sqrt(1 + 2EH^2 / u^2 ) (There is a concrete proof for this that is why I agree with it)
However... from this equation here to get to the equation we want then we must logically prove that 2E in this scenario is equal to -1, or E = -1/2 .
However, there is another equation:
E = -u/2a (Again, I agree with this equation because there is a concrete proof of it)
BUT! For -u/2a to equal to -1/2 ...
then u must be equal to a.
But there is no way to prove that u = a unless we prove that:
H^2 / (u - B) + H^2 / (u + B) /2 = u
But we can only prove that if B/u = sqrt(1 - H^2 / u^2 )
But we can only prove that if E = -1/2
But we can only prove that if -u/2a = -1/2
But we can only prove that if u = a
But we can only prove that if
H^2 / (u - B) + H^2 / (u + B) / 2 = u
But we can only prove that if.....
You see the problem I am facing here? :)
I guess it would be only up to the first knuckle.
So, first off, this is not a homework problem. It is for a book I am writing.
Anywho, the object is in an orbit around Earth with a periapsis of 20 km and an apoapsis of 2,000,000 km. It has a mass of 1.11 x 10^14 metric tons, and is roughly spherical with a diameter of 30 kilometers. (I am fully aware that the periapsis is beneath the atmosphere and the apoapsis is outside the sphere of influence.)
Good luck!
Hi, I've read that the semi-major axis of two orbiting objects is equal to the mean separation. However, imagine we have two stars, each of the same mass, orbiting about the centre of mass right in between them - surely the semi-major axis is then half of the mean separation? I can't see where I'm going wrong here.
I really enjoy no step back. It is a great DLC, it adds a ton of immersion and depth to the soviet union. It broke the shit out of tanks but that can be pretty easily fixed with balancing patches. The depth to the soviet union was my favorite part. The political paranoia, the industrial focuses, merging of plants, etc etc it's all really cool to me and I enjoy playing the soviets a lot more than I did before. But... after going back and playing germany, and america, and england, they do not feel as immersive and have no where near enough depth. Germany, arguably the most important power during the war, doesn't even have a communist focus path. The industrial focuses are boring. They just give you a few factories and refineries and that's it. Japan also feels similarly lacking. I would say this is mainly an issue with the axis, but america's focus tree also feels pretty hollow and lame to me at this point. Will the next DLC be focused on revamping the axis, or any other majors, or japan or something? I'm worried they're gonna make some dumbass nordic dlc or alpine dlc and slap something together for italy lol. so basically are we going to see other majors get the overhaul that the soviets got?

Does anyone have a copy of the Newcastle vs. Sydney City game on digital or VHS? I have been trying to track down this game for a number of years without success.
I have a hard drive of thousands of league games going back to the early 70s and this is one game that I've always wanted to watch again and have in my collection. I would be more than happy to swap/trade some of my games. I have my games archived and on a spreadsheet.
You can find some of my videos here: Cheers
