Feel free to use this idea. This is a lighthearted game about how the famous groundhog got his powers.
The game that I envision is one where you control the legendary groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, and you must lead him on an adventure. The story and lore of Phil stem from Germanic traditions, and were brought to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania by the German immigrants that settled there. So, I’ve decided on a Norse mythology theme for the game.
Allies and opponents: Aside from Phil, all of the other creatures that you encounter are “Ratatoskr”. These are squirrel-like creatures from Norse mythology. The good Ratatoskr deliver messages from the gods, and they are your friends. The mischievous Ratatoskr stir up trouble between the hungry dragon that sits in the roots of the Tree of Life and the wise eagle that’s resting on the top, and these are your opponents. Most of them will be your opponents. Only a few are friends, and they will give you helpful advice and help you progress from time to time.
Gameplay: There are 75 stages in the campaign. The first 25 take place in the forest, the next 25 take place underground in a Norse labyrinth, and the final 25 take place in the Tree of Life (Yggdrasil) as you climb to the top. Each stage is 2-D, as if you’re looking down on it. The goal is to trap enemy Ratatoskr before they trap you. There are no direct attacks. Instead, you need to push blocks around, build dams to direct water flow, knock things over to block paths, etc. Groundhogs are natural engineers, so there are lots of possibilities. You need to think strategically, because your opponents are very clever, and will work together to trap you. No one dies, but they are defeated when they have been pinned down into one square and cannot escape. You must restart a stage if you lose. Essentially, each stage is like a fast-passed game of rodent chess!
Each stage should have 1 - 4 Ratatoskr. Each one should have a different fur color (brown, red, black, and grey), and one possibility is if each one has different behavior and tactics (like the ghosts in Pac-Man). In some stages, you may have an ally Ratatoskr helping you. Other times, you will talk with an ally before the beginning of a stage, but you’ll be on your own after that.
Endgame: When you beat the final boss at the top of Yggdrasil, you meet the wise eagle. He thanks you for stopping the troublesome Ratatoskr, which would have wreaked havoc. As a reward, he grants you immortality, inte
