What are the Pandora Papers ?

"The Pandora Papers is a leak of almost 12 million documents that reveals hidden wealth, tax avoidance and, in some cases, money laundering by some of the world's rich and powerful.

More than 600 journalists in 117 countries have been trawling through the files from 14 sources for months, finding stories that are being published this week.

The data was obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in Washington DC, which has been working with more than 140 media organisations on its biggest ever global investigation.

The Pandora Papers leak includes 6.4 million documents, almost three million images, more than a million emails and almost half-a-million spreadsheets.

Hey, I'm a worker on the 900 block of Pandora. I provide outreach services to arguably our most vulnerable and disenfranchised street-based community. (Obviously won't be saying which organization I work for.) I see a lot of shit happen and even more shit spread about our community and want to share some perspectives with you and ask you to help make some positive changes.

There are a lot of problems that occur on or near the block. It is where the main building of Our Place is, and there is a safe drug injection site right next door and a newly opened safe inhalation site right across the street. SOLID and AVI do a lot of outreach services in the area. Combined, these organizations provide food, shelter, community care, places to warm up, places for people to do their substances safely while being supervised by trained employees, opportunities to be treated by a nurse or paramedic, opportunities to be referred to detox and treatment, and more. They are invaluable in maintaining the ongoing survival of those entrenched in addiction and homelessness in our district.

However, these organizations remain chronically underfunded. The safe injection site (one of only a handful on the island) had to decrease their hours a while back, which means more people are using and overdosing in the washrooms at Our Place. Our Place is facing staffing shortages right in the midst of freezing temperatures which means they have to close instead of being able to provide space for people to warm up. The city of Victoria delayed their emergency weather protocol and the options are limited and difficult to walk to if you are based downtown (see @backpackproject_victoriabc on Instagram for more info).

Organizations have been forced by inadequate funding to limit how much they give out many things, including matches, candles, bubble pipes (used to reduce the potential harms associated with meth consumption), hand warmers, coffee/tea, socks, scarfs, and gloves. Many workers at these organizations spend a good deal of their income making up for these funding deficits, which is abhorrent that the funding situation has made it necessary. The workers are not paid a lot (usually between 20-25 an hour, 33-40 hours a week) and often come from marginalized communities themselves. That's not to even speak of volunteers and activists who raise funds for things like sleeping bags and tents.

A good majority of posts in the past regarding options were always along the lines of "Only use options if you understand them", but when met with questions to expand upon them so that the "smoothe" brains can "understand" them as well, those commenters magically disappear without a trace.

Here's the thing, I used to believe that options were FUD because of "you're just giving money (premium) to the hedgies. This is true, but only if you buy super OTM options and/or FDs (weeklies). With the majority of apes being new to investing, with most investing for the FIRST time, last year, I believed it was better that apes stay away from options and simply buy and HODL shares, just as RC and GameStop did. With RC/GameStop announcing the official DRS count in their official SEC filings, this only reinforced my beliefs. However, if you take a step back and look at how options really work, it makes perfect sense to make use of this "hidden" card. After all, hedgies use them as well, so why can't retail? This is a zero sum game after all.

Here is how and why options in conjunction with DRS shares could potentially ignite the rocket to MOASS.

• Hedgies are in a predicament because they wrote a ton of naked (uncovered) call options thinking that the price of $GME would NEVER exceed the $20 mark. This backfired on them when a bunch of OG sub retards discovered Pandora's box aka $GME back in January of 2021 - They bought options regardless of price going up, down, or sideways
• After Robbinghood and other criminal brokerages turned off the buy button, apes realized that they could still acquire shares of $GME by purchasing ITM/ATM call options and EXERCISING them, which forced hedge funds to deliver 100 shares per contract of GameStop
• Hedge Funds did not expect nor have they ever experienced the true nature of our retardedness. They did not expect apes to buy shares and call options at any fucking price....up, down, sideways, or in your bum IT DID NOT AND STILL DOES NOT FUCKIN MATTER to APES. As cokerat cramer said, he's never seen a group of investors so unaffected by price before in his life.
• Because all the criminal brokerages, market makers, and banks sold so many fucking uncovered/naked calls, never expecting them to be exercised due to their greed, they are currently in this shit show. They are trying everything they possibly can "to survive another day" and prevent MOASS
• If apes continue to DRS and lock the float, and in combination purchase ITM/A

One would ask, how is this even possible?

Perhaps the same reason why a bunch of "meme stonks" correlate together without regard for market cap sizes, different industries, and float size. Yet, the most plausible explanation for these meme stonks was detailed in the SEC report (pg. 21) for being highly shorted and tied to one particular idiosyncratic stock like Gamestop.

So how is crypto related to stocks?

Through Digital Currency Group which is owned by shorting hedge funds (SHFs) that have their money tied up from betting against Gamestop.

Check out this amazing due diligence, "exposing crypto" by u/natep001001 with TLDR:

Pandora papers showed that people are using loopholes in tax laws to hide their wealth in tax havens to hide their wealth or ill gotten gains. They are not using cryptocurrency to do that, there are plenty of loopholes in tax laws for doing it legally.

The rich are holding properties and investments under a network of offshore companies that are set up in other countries, or "offshore".

These offshore countries or territories are where:

- it's easy to set up companies

- there are laws that make it difficult to identify owners of companies

- there is low or no corporation tax.

The best part of it is that using tax havens to dodge taxes is not illegal. Loopholes in the law allow people to legally avoid paying some taxes by moving their money or setting up companies in tax havens, but it is often seen as unethical.

Its estimated that from $5.6 trillion to $32 trillion is hidden in tax havens, according to the ICIJ. The IMF has said the use of tax havens costs governments worldwide up to $600bn in lost taxes each year.

To hide money all you need to do set up a shell company in one of the countries or jurisdictions with high levels of secrecy. This is a company that exists in name only, with no staff or office. It costs money though. Specialist firms are paid to set up and run shell companies on your behalf. These firms can provide an address and names of paid directors, therefore leaving no trail of who is ultimately behind the business.

When such a huge amount of money is hidden in offshore havens, the rich still blames cryptocurrency as the culprit for money laundering. This is classic gaslighting. They are projecting and blaming the most vulnerable group, what they do themselves.

This legal way of tax dodging will never end because the people that could end the secrecy offshore are themselves benefiting from it. So there's no incentive for them to end it.

Its time more people speak up against this and move more towards cryptocurrency where all data is independently verifiable.

TL;DR - I've been a part of the /r/CryptoCurrency sub for 4 years now, so long before Moons. While no subreddit is perfect, I don't think I've ever seen a subreddit so filled with bad-faith posting as in the last few months.

I think Moons are and will be a net positive to the community, but at the moment I think I can effectively argue that the current distribution favours bad-faith engagement over genuine participation.

#####What is bad-faith engagement?

Simply put, it's interacting with the subreddit not because of interest in participating in a community, but instead to maximise financial gain with low-effort, phoney participation.

What this means is that those that post in bad-faith have found the most effective ways of receiving karma back for time spent in the sub.

#####So then what is "genuine participation"

Far from pretending I'm the arbiter of what is good and what is not, I think it's common sense for anyone to separate the wheat from the chaff. Genuine engagement would be sharing information, providing helpful answers, asking important, newbie or hard questions, having a little fun, etc etc.

In essence, it's just participation done for the sake of sharing knowledge and information, for challenging opinions and beliefs and generally, being active without spamming.

Governance.

The admins have provided us with tools to govern ourselves. We (users and moderators) can decide on polls to change how Moons distribution works and with this, we can shape the direction of the subreddit. Currently, we have decided that certain posts receive more karma, certain posts receive less.

I believe this tool is crucial to shaping the subreddit but there is a finite limit on its usefulness which I fear we have already exceeded.

What I mean by this is, how can you ever curb bad faith engagement with the subreddit if every month, a higher proportion of voting power is given to those who chiefly engage in bad-faith posting?

Every month the balance of power shifts over and we see more people awarded moons for bad-faith participation that includes, but is not limited to:

• Spamming of certain types of content, such as GIFs - which by their bright, attention grabbing nature and ability to show pop-culture media, put them on a higher probability of upvotes.
• Spamming of asinine, low-effort content, particularly in the Daily Discussion
• Immediate, barely relevant comments posted before a topic is 20 seconds old in New or *Ris
