North Central American English: merging of "will" and "well"
I live in Minnesota, and I've started to notice a vowel reduction and merging of "will" and "well" in both my own speech and that of others around me. I haven't heard anyone talk about it yet, so I wanted to bring it up here.
If I say those two words in isolation, I pronounce them as:
- "will" [wɪɫ]
- "well" [wɛɫ]
However, if I say them as part of an informal blurb like these examples, I've noticed that I reduce the vowels, and pronounce them both as [wɐɫ]:
- "Text me when you get home!" "I will!"
- "Well what if they never read your email?"
I don't hear this vowel shift in other words that rhyme with those two; for example, "bill" is still [bɪɫ] and "bell" is still [bɛɫ], even in informal speech. Nor do I hear this shift in the noun form of those two words, i.e. "my grandma's will" or "that stone well in our yard".
Has anyone else noticed this?
History of North-Central American English?
Has there been any research into determining when the Upper Midwestern accent began to emerge in a recognizable form?
Oral history recordings of elderly Chicagoans appear to suggest that the similar (?) Inland Northern accent began to show up down there in the early 20th Century (1900s-1920s), and that got me wondering about their neighbors to the north/west.

I saw this snake during the summer, it slowly slithered away while shaking its tail-tip at me and then it suddenly bolted. My two guesses are central rat snake and North American racer? [MD]

Is heavy metal (the type where they scream) dominantly an English-Speaking thing? And is it dominantly a North American/USA thing?
When I search for heavy metal in Spanish, I've only stumbled across one song, and it only had a few words in Spanish and the rest in English. I'm also familiar with Rammstein, a German industrial metal band, but they don't seem to have songs where there's metal screams that I'm aware of.
I also asked a friend from Venezuela if he knew of any heavy metal songs in Spanish, and he didn't know much examples (he mentioned rap artists though).
And if anyone knows any non-English heavy metal songs, feel free to share with me.
edit: searching for metalcore mainly, and/or similar to We Came As Romans type
Do you think that non-us citizens from North and South America should be able to call themselves Americans when speaking english?
You know, because they're from the American continent?

Dna results as an American, from past knowledge I knew of me being 1/8th Greek, 1/8th Irish, with my family saying we had Scottish roots and English roots(but we weren’t sure how much). Being from North Carolina the amount of English isn’t surprising. The results seem pretty accurate.

I'm looking for info on the distinctive "singy-songy" intonation of North Central American English.
Up here in the Upper Midwest we are know to have a very distinctive intonation pattern that is often described as "singy-songy" and is popularly considered the result of the influence of the pitch accent of Norwegian and Swedish.
Does anyone have any stuff on it? It's pretty much a universal thing here in the Fargo area and I'm having trouble finding serious linguistic work about it.

Canadians, do you also get slightly annoyed when people use the term "american" referring to U.S. exclusively (instead of the whole north, central and south america)?
I hope this question isn't too common or to weird, but...
Here in Brazil we are educated that pretty much anywhere you look on a map that is below GMT 0 is considered "the Americas".
So kids usually get really confused at certain age when they see the term "american" being used while excluding South America. I certainly had that phase and still get a bit annoyed when I see those situations, what about you?
America is a large continent. It is so large it has been given the words North, Central and South to distguish what part of the continent is being discussed. Americans are those people from Argentina all the way to Canada and in between.
