Mozambique tilapia Puns

I have 11 fry, 4 of wish I wish to grow and keep in a 400gal pond and the remainder I will most likely sell or give away.

Any general advice on raising them? I've read that they get along with goldfish and other smaller fish.

I've got a fish here with a distended bottom throat. The hyoid bone would be directly above it. I was wondering if this is related to the health of the fish and if I should treat for anything.

The fish is about six to eight inches long and the distention is very loose, as though swollen but there is no pressure. The distention wobbles about in the water. This is the only fish with the distention and I need to know if the rest of the fish are in any danger.

Well hello! My students and I have been working very hard and our aquaponics system has finally gotten off the ground. We currently have an IBC system with a 200ish gallon tank and two media trays. They were started in late January.

Since our system is fully cycled we feel like it's time to graduate from 20 cent feeder goldfish to the real thing. I want to get my hands on some tilapia fingerlings.

We are about to construct an additional much larger system in a couple weeks. Something on the order of 250-300 gallons, 2 media beds, 2 DWC trays, and a sump. I would love to be able to buy fish that will eventually populate both.

How many tilapia do you think the 2 systems will accommodate? One system currently sustains 50 goldfish and 2 sucker fish so for both I was thinking around 75-100 tilapia.

I am hoping someone in the DFW or surrounding areas can donate (think of the children) or sell (on a school budget) 75-100 tilapia. I really believe in this project so I'm willing to drive a few hours for them if delivery is a silly proposition.

I have no idea how this works and I was going to populate with some nice Koi, but I thought teaching about sustainability and having a yearly fish fry at the end of the school year would be pretty awesome for the students.

The pond is small, about 1/4 acre, 4-5 feet at the deepest. We stocked Mozambique tilapia in the spring for duck weed control. The pond is eutrophic and used to be 90-100% covered by duck weed year round. Through tilapia, grass carp, aeration, and manual removal, we’ve been able to reduce that down to <5% coverage. So it’s all open water now. No submerged vegetation. Covers are limited outside of fallen tree branches.

I’ve caught one tilapia using worm under bobber the entire year around late summer back when the pond was still mostly covered, that’s it. Some of the tilapias are white and easy to see. I can see schools of them near the surface, eating the remaining duck weed and water meal. There are second, maybe third gen fish. But I can’t catch any of them! I’ve tried worm under bobber, corn and peas under bobber, artificial lures like worm and rooster tail. I thought maybe due to season, but it has been in 70’s to 80’s here in Texas, and I’m catching catfish, bluegills, red ears, and bowfin in the same pond. I did notice that catching fish has been harder after fall. I don’t know whether that’s due to season or because there was a big environmental shift in that the pond went from mostly covered to almost no cover very quickly.

I’m just at a loss. I can see them swimming around feet from me but can’t catch them. They startle easily so casting net also wouldn’t work. I’d really like to harvest some before it gets too cold and they die off. There is a section of the pond that is under 1 foot deep and they often go there. I’ve thought about maybe building a stick trap.

Any suggestion is welcome.

Hey everyone! One of my fish (Black Mozambique Tilapia) has been acting lethargic and keeps spitting out it's food. On closer inspection I noticed some markings near its gills and mouth (the orange bump on its chin is a food pellet). Has anyone seen this before? Today's readings have been: Nitrite (0.0ppm), Ammonia (0.5ppm), nitrate (80ppm), pH (7.4), 29.5mg/L DO. The other fish in the tank are now about twice the size and don't show similar symptoms.
