The knowledge that the Imperium of Man is backward and decaying is nothing new. However, I do not believe that anyone has provided an in-depth analysis of the institutions of the Imperium and why core aspects of those institutions contribute either to the prosperity of the Imperium or to its degradation. We will see that it will overwhelmingly be the latter. In this essay, I hope to fill in that gap in our knowledge using the theoretical framework of Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson (from here on I will refer to them as DJ for brevity). For my sources, I will treat the Lexicanum as canon and will use it as my primary resource. I am also focusing on the Imperium as it exists in the 40,000 millenium, prior to the resurrection of Roboute Guilliman, as his reforms might make some of what I will describe inaccurate. Finally, I will rely on real-world examples to illustrate my ideas and will cite those accordingly. With the brief introduction out of the way, allow me to give a brief overview of DJ's theories.
DJ's theories seek to explain how nations achieve sustainable development. They conceptualize two axes that determine the ability of a nation to have sustainable development: the centralized-uncentralized axis and the extractive-inclusive axis:
- Extractive institutions are those that seek to exclude large portions of society from power and income for the benefit of an elite whereas inclusive institutions allow all parts of society to take part in economic and political activity. One can imagine a slave plantation as an extractive entity and a society of small landowning farmers as an inclusive entity. [1]
- Centralized entities are those that can bring to bear concentrated power to enact their will. Modern states are centralized entities, with a powerful tax agency to collect revenues, a strong military that no other entity within that state can rival, and powerful law enforcement that establishes a common set of rules within that state. A decentralized entity would be something akin to feudal England, where subsidiary lords have great autonomy and powerful armies that can match those of the monarch. [1]

Who made Ergo crypto?
The lead developer behind the Ergo project is Alexander Chepurnoy.He is a blockchain veteran, having participated in Bitcoin’s development since 2011. Chepurnoy has co-authored and published multiple papers on blockchain technology, and is a degree holder from the Saint Petersburg National Research University (ITMO). Chepurnoy’s first big project was the NXT platform.
Together with Dmitry Meshkov, they embarked on the effort to create Ergo, launching the mainnet on July 1, 2019. Meshkov has a Ph.D. in physics and a similarly rich experience in software development. At the time of Ergo’s launch, Chepurnoy issued a statement clarifying what the ergo crypto is all about:
“We have developed an approach to smart contracts in line with Bitcoin’s original concept, but with small additions that potentially cover 99% of current use-cases. Ergo allows people to synchronise with the network by downloading less than a megabyte of data, reducing the process from potentially weeks to minutes and enabling it to take place on mobile devices – all with the same security as current third-party solutions.”
The Ergo team saw that both Bitcoin and Ethereum have considerable flaws. Ergo was born as a result of a motivation to address these issues. Like Bitcoin, Ergo (ERG) employs Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus to secure its blockchain network. However, like Ethereum, Ergo is simultaneously a programmable blockchain capable of deploying smart contracts.
