It is up there with The Shining as one of the best Stephen King films. The acting of Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes set the tone of the movie and had me on the edge of my seat until the end.

There was a reason why Kathy Bates won the Best Actress Oscar in 1991

Our local cinema (its literally a few doors down) is as indie as they come & with Halloween around the corner they've got a few movie showings on film including the classic Misery, so my wife & I went to remind ourselves of THAT scene!!

We got quite a bit of background from the projectionist who owns a little store & sells & hires old film equipment & you could tell film was a labour of love to him.

I'd not seen Misery for well over a decade & I suppose its a very different type of film to what we tend to currently consume, however I feel that Rob Reiner's adaptation of Stephen King's story is well executed & James Caan & Kathy Bates were amazing together. You could see why Bates won an Oscar.

Fwiw I still winced at THAT scene

There's a bunch of new series and films released over the last year about The Gays that have gotten praise (including >!It's a Sin in the UK, Your Name Engraved Herein on Netflix, or Supernova starring Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth!<) that all revolve around death, heartbreak or AIDS to some degree. I'm sure they're all amazing productions based on their own merits, but since I first became aware of gay stories in film and TV in the 90s the vast majority of it has been about tragedy and I just can't watch it any more, no matter how good it is.

I know there are exceptions to this rule as a trend, but I feel like productions that are high quality and which do not fit those tropes are really in the minority, and it's kind of exhausting to me after two decades of being aware of it.

I made a conscious effort to read more Stephen King this year with wildly varying results - from the sublime (The Shining) to the ridiculous (IT)...but that's a different story.

One book I've avoided thus far is Misery, simply because I've seen the film so many times. I unfairly assumed that the film was complete replica of the book. And boy was I wrong.

I read the book in a day and was gripped from start to end. There were several exhilarating points where I could feel my pulse racing. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement.

Has anyone read and watched Misery and do you prefer one over the other?

For real though.

I’m a huge fan of the gore subgenre of horror and this is what I usually prefer but this movie somehow manages to freak me out ten times more. I watched this movie for the first time in a while yesterday as a part of my own King marathon. And wow. Still so good. Kathy is goddamn brilliant and still scares the shit out of me. And I still can’t watch her break the dude’s ankles. Fuck that.

Honestly I think the scariest part about this movie is that it’s pretty real. It can happen to anyone who is well known. So I’m never going to become an author. Or become anything remotely famous. Ever.
