Best performance in a movie that wasn't great.

Everyone knows Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan was the best thing about the prequels. He captured Alec Guinness perfectly. I however have another great performance and that's Paul Bettany as the Vision in Age of Ultron. In a movie that had too many explosions, too many wacky one liners he somehow managed to capture his character perfectly. Especially the last moment with Ultron were they talk about humans in general. While he was good in the other MCU movies I think this one stands out.

What's a niche genre you stumbled upon and really like?

I remember my older cousin getting into Hawaiian music back in the early 90s because the records were like $0.50 each. Recently I've gone through a dub phase and suddenly stumbled on this sea-shanty punk stuff (The Dreadnoughts, Colm McGuinness, The Longest Johns, Storm Weather Shanty Choir, Salty Dick, etc.) and I'm obsessed. What's something you've discovered randomly and are surprised you like?

I read 28 40k Books in 2021: Here are my thoughts

HeyaSo as is tradition each year I post a little review of the 40k books I read last year. The link to my AOS books read is here, and for the handful (largely political and economic books) I read last year feel free to DM me!A quick note on what I count as a "book" - It needs to be on Goodreads, and cost over ยฃ5. If it's the price of a book, I get to count it as one!

The TLDR: Go read these books:Liber Xenologis, Brutal Kunnin, Mephiston Revenant Crusade, Soul Hunter, he First Heretic, Rites of Passage, Dredge Runners, Alpharius Head of the Hydra, The Twice Dead King, Malleus, and Hereticus!

  1. Fabius Bile: Primogenitor โ€“ Joshua Reynolds4/5A mad scientist attacks some elvesI love how this is different than other 40k novels. I donโ€™t feel like Iโ€™m being pitched to buy specific minis; thereโ€™s a variety in cast and adversaries which are utilised to show multiple perspectives and desires.Itโ€™s well lauded so I wont dwell too much on it; but I certainly want to read the rest.
  2. The Devastation of Baal - Guy Haley4/5Arty vampires fight against biologically perfect space bugsIโ€™ve given this a four out of kindness but if I was pushed Iโ€™d consider dropping it to a 3. This book reads like Haley desperately wanted to mimick Dune mixed with Zulu but without realising what makes these work. I love the attempt to discuss environmental materialism; but directly stating it every few pages is a little jarring once you notice the trend. The character stuff is great, though Mortarion feels a little flat compared to his own novels; as does Dante.Donโ€™t get me wrong, thereโ€™s a lot of good here (namely the civilian scenes, and the perspective of the Tyranids, and Seth!) but it feels like a shadow of other books
  3. Avening Son โ€“ Guy Haley3/5The dawn of Guillemans new Imperium; a story of clerks, space marines, and historians.Again another odd rankng; itโ€™s 3/5 because the actual plot is slow and the space marine segments are a little flat. But some sections are flawless. Offices being post-apocalyptic due to the nature of beurocracy? Perfect! The historian character was very interesting; although his arc (and other parts of the book) felt more like an echo of Heresy era books than anything else. With another edit this could have been 5/5
  4. Black Library Celebration 20214/5Mixed stories! Some really good stories; notably a 40k one about an unwilling cultist. This has stuck with

Just all over the map ito political sentiments and sympathies. Immigration was not discussed nor was psychiatric medication.

Didnโ€™t agree with everything she said but she was pretty based ngl. Felt like a new type was dropping right in front of me in real time

Books With Linguistic Themes

Here's a list of books, stories, and essays involving linguistics, language, and communication, taken from the comments for 5 reddit posts asking of books involving linguistics (including one post from r/linguistics), a Goodreads list, this list from a linguistic (includes lots of great nonfiction resources as well), and from the sf-encyclopedia on linguistics. Here are links to Wikipedia's articles for linguistic relativity (the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, although this is considered a basically disproven hypothesis) and conceptual metaphor (largely championed by George Lakoff; see Metaphors We Live By). Both are pretty relevant for fiction that explores how language might shape our thinking.

The list is organized by how frequently an author or work was mentioned from my 8 sources. I proceed each with how many they were mentioned in, so that number should roughly reflect how relevant an author or work is to the linguistics theme and how popular the work is. I've included basically everything mentioned, since I haven't read most of these, so that does mean some of them may only be loosely related to linguistics, or just do something that's interesting with language. I've included comments with the ones I have read on how much it actually incorporates linguistics.

  • 8: Ted Chiang
    • 8: Story of your Life (short story)
      • An iconic story, this is what's generally given as an example in the Reddit posts for what's being looked for. Also the basis for the movie Arrival.
    • 72 Letters (short story)
      • A little bit of a stretch, perhaps. Written names animate golems, with the name determining their attributes.
    • The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling
      • About communication methods and memory, such as speech verse writing, so very relevant depending on how loosely you take the linguistic theme.
  • 8: Suzette Haden-Elgin (Linguist)
    • 8: Native Tongue Series
    • Coyoted Jones series
    • The Ozark Trilogy
    • The Judas Rose
    • Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense series (nonfiction)
  • 7: China Mieville

Bingo 2021: My progress update 43/75 done!

If you're not familiar with bingo, Hereโ€™s the big post with all the information & square definitions, if I can tempt you into participating.ย

A lot of people do multiple cards and pick extra themes for their cards, and Iโ€™m one of them. For this year Iโ€™m doing three cards, one featuring only BIPOC authors, one only books I already own, and a third Iโ€™m totally not but actually yes doing. The BIPOC authors card is also 80% owned books, but there are 5 squares I couldnโ€™t cover with what I had. Iโ€™m also accidently doing a 3rd card of books I hadnโ€™t planned but ended up fitting, this one has a few squares still blank.

collage of all 3 cards

I tried to run a few quick stats, I messed up somewhere cause they donโ€™t add up, but this aproximately it:

  • demographics: books with white authors 19, books with Black authors 12, Indigenous:1, Asian 7, Latinx 2
  • author gender: women 22, men 12, non-binary 6
  • books owned before bingo: 19, new books: 22
  • book club/readalong books: 15
  • SciFi: 7, Fantasy: 34
  • Adult 34, YA 7, MG 2
  • First in series: 18, Further in series: 13, Stand Alone 11

I didn't pay attention to hard mode at all this year since I wanted to get as many owned books as I can. The book club books are, I'm guessing/hoping the main culprits for new books.

Since Iโ€™m doing 3 cards rather than try to fit 75 mini-reviews/descriptions at the end of the year gonna try and split them into 2 posts, one now that Iโ€™m about half way done and one at the end.

A classic joke updated for our times

President Putin is sitting in his office when his telephone rings.

"Hello, Mr. Putin!" a heavily accented voice said. "This is Paddy down at the Harp Pub in County Cork, Ireland. I am ringing to inform you that we are officially declaring war on you!"

"Well, Paddy," Putin replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?"

"Right now," says Paddy, after a moment's calculation, "there is meself, me cousin Seรกn, me next door neighbour Seamus, and the entire darts team from the pub. That makes eight!"

Putin paused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 1,000,000 men in my army waiting to move on my command."

"Begoora!" says Paddy. "I'll have to ring you back."

Sure enough, the next day, Paddy calls again. "Mr. Putin, the war is still on. We have managed to get us some infantry equipment!"

"And what equipment would that be Paddy?" Putin asks.

"Well, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Murphy's farm tractor."

Putin sighs amused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 60,000 tanks and 50,000 armoured personnel carriers. Also, I have increased my army to 1,500,000 since we last spoke."

"Saints preserve us!" says Paddy. "I'll have to get back to you."

Sure enough, Paddy rings again the next day. "Mr. Putin, the war is still on! We have managed to get ourselves airborne! We have modified Jackie McLaughlin's ultra-light with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the Shamrock Bar have joined us as well!"

Putin was silent for a minute and then cleared his throat. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 1000 bombers and 2000 fighter planes. My military bases are surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last spoke, I have increased my army to 2,000,000!"

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!" says Paddy, "I will have to ring you back."

Sure enough, Paddy calls again the next day. "Good mornin', Mr. Putin! I am sorry to inform you that we have had to call off the war."

"Really? I am sorry to hear that," says Putin. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

"Well," says Paddy, "we had a long chat over a few pints of Guinness, and we decided there is no way we can feed 2,000,000 prisoners."

Next President?

Just checked Paddy Power and you can take a punt on who you think the next president will be. Mairead McGuinness is best odds, for some reason Miriam O'Callaghan is at 10:1. Roy Keane at around 500:1.

Who do you think will throw their hat in when Miggeldy steps down? Whoever it is will have big (yet little) shoes to fill. I don't see why Mairead would leave Europe (unless she's not allowed stand again). I can see Bertie going for it, maybe Enda Kenny or Allen Shatter from the old FG lineup. Wildcard candidate Gerry Adams (sinn fein for the triple cup, government north and south and the Aras). Random celebrity, either Vincent Browne or Panti Bliss.

Any thoughts? Pointlessly procrastinate with me of a Friday.

Predicting Oscars 2022 Nominations - Late January

A set of predictions before the PGA/DGA/WGA/ACE wave.

Although The Power of the Dog is the sensible frontrunner on paper, I was planning on having West Side Story winning Picture and Director. It had been my frontrunner after reviews came out, but I became less sure after its dismal box office - I thought its performance earlier this month was a reassuring sign however. A BP win would imply wins at PGA and DGA as well as better performance on the preferential ballot than TPOTD come voting period.

However its ASC miss today gives me serious pause - it is very rare to miss there and win Best Director, which I think is necessary for WSS to win BP. Therefore I'm going to chicken out and go with the safe choice. Furthermore, what had looked like a Dune/WSS below-the-line battle is probably just going to be Dune domination (Dunemination?)

Conversely Nightmare Alley, which I had presumed dead on arrival, is having a surprisingly solid showing at guilds and I wonder if that means something beyond maybe a slight overperformance. I still think a BP nom is very unlikely, but if it gets a PGA nom I'll probably pull the trigger.

Best Picture

  1. The Power of the Dog
  2. West Side Story
  3. Belfast
  4. Dune
  5. Don't Look Up
  6. Licorice Pizza
  7. King Richard
  8. CODA
  9. Being the Ricardos
  10. Drive My Car
    ...
  11. House of Gucci
  12. Tick, Tick... Boom!
  13. The Tragedy of Macbeth
  14. Nightmare Alley
  15. The Lost Daughter
  16. Spider-Man: No Way Home
  17. No Time to Die
  18. The Worst Person in the World
  19. Parallel Mothers
  20. Encanto

I don't see much reason at present to overthink whether the top 8 will be nominated, but what lands in the final two spots remains very unclear to me. I will not be too surprised at any of Being the Ricardos, Drive My Car, House of Gucci, Tick Tick Boom, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. For the ninth slot, I will most likely pick whatever pops up at PGA, and maybe apply more personal/risky discretion for the tenth slot.

I've spent the last month or so very skeptical about Drive My Car having much chance outside of International Feature, not even being sure it would win International Feature, despite it being my favourite movie of the year. However, I'm starting to get the sense there's genuine buzz/awareness in the industry now, and that it's getting both eyes and appreciation. In that case it's very possible the subset of voters with more highbrow/arthouse taste will rally hard for it. It's a risky prediction, but I'll go with it for now.

Mini reviews โ€“ Black Sun, The Left Hand of Darkness, Abhorsen, The Legends of the First Empire, Too Like the Lightning, Piranesi, The Relentless Moon, Season of the Witch

Here I am again, just a woman, sitting in from of her PC, trying to catch up with her pile of unwritten reviews by writing a mini-review post. One day I might accept that catching up will never happen, but not today.

Cover photos of the books mentioned below

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

>A god will return When the earth and sky converge Under the black sun In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a manโ€™s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain. Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created an epic adventure exploring the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in the most original series debut of the decade.

Why I picked it up:ย Been meaning to read it for ages cause of the Pre-Colombian setting and it was part of our Hugo Readalong on r/fantasy

I was super excited for this and it lived up to expectations. I loved the world, it felt like epic fantasy, which I havenโ€™t really been in love with lately. There are different cultures each with their own gods and religions and thereโ€™s omnious change about. Thereโ€™s also the good old journey half across the world in a hurry, this time across a large body of water which was neat, some interesting challenges there.

The chapters jump back and forth a fair bit, in print i

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Are Anakin, Padme and McGregor's Obi-Wan (aka the Prequel "big three") embedded in the pop cultural consciousness as much as Luke, Han and Leia?

I think it's very likely that if you stopped anyone on the street and asked them who Luke Skywalker, Han Solo or Princess Leia was, there's a 50/50 chance they'd be able to recognize those names even if they knew almost nothing about Star Wars. Now, they MIGHT struggle a bit with Han as I feel his name probably carries the least recognition of the three when it comes to casuals. Nonetheless, all of this goes to show just how much the reputation of these characters has transcended the boundaries of the franchise in which they exist.

However, can the same be said of the main trio from the Prequel Trilogy? I think you'd have the most success with Obi-Wan, but even so, would people be more likely to associate the character with Guinness's version rather than McGregor's? Anakin would probably get a reasonable amount of recognition, but that may only be from people who have had significant exposure to the franchise, even if they weren't fans themselves, such as a fan's spouse or sibling. However, Padme, on the other hand, I feel would come off the worst. Hell, I feel the name "Queen Amidala" would carry more weight in terms of recognition among casuals than Padme.

Now, I'm not saying this to be a Prequel basher. I grew up with those movies, and even if they'll never surpass the original trilogy in my eyes, they'll always have a special place in my heart. I'm just trying to get a feeling of how much their core cast has penetrated the pop culture mindset as much as those from the originals.

Thoughts?

Ten Mini Bingo Reviews

I don't know if I'm getting better at picking bingo books for myself, or have been extremely lucky, but almost all of the books I've read for bingo have been 4-5 star reads. Here are ten more mini reviews!

I would say they're big-spoiler-free, though they do talk about the content of the books and early plot developments, which some may consider spoilers. Not for those who like going in completely blind. I also included categories these books also fit, but they may not be comprehensive (I didn't see if they'd ever been book club picks, and I'm sure I missed a few categorizations.)

A to Z Genre Guide

When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo

Hard Mode: Yes

Also fits: Trans or NB Character (HM), Set in Asia (HM)

What is it? The sequel to Empress of Salt and Fortune, in which a story-collecting cleric must appease a trio of tiger demons by relaying (and, at times, altering) the life story of their beloved ancestor.

It happened! I finally found a novella I unequivocally love, not love-but-wish-it-were-a-novel! The courtly romance tale within a tale of Empress felt to me like it would be better served in its own book, but the folk story in Tiger is perfectly suited to its brief telling around a fire. I loved how the folk story transformed from the commonly-accepted, human-focused telling to the darker, more interesting truth the tiger demons shared. The two versions of the story combined with the constant threat of being devoured made for a tense read I tore through in a few hours and will revisit. Very highly recommended. 4.75/5

Witches

The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith

Hard Mode: Yes

Also fits: Found Family (HM), Genre Blend, First Person, Debut Author, Published in 2021 (HM), Mystery Plot, Gothic Fantasy (HM)

What is it? In turn-of-the-century NYC, a poor seamstress accidentally kills her boss and is swept away to a magic girl's school--but the school is not the fairy tale it seems to be.

Full disclosure: I know the author of this book, but even if I didnโ€™t, I think I would have been amazed and moved by this story. It takes the โ€˜magic schoolโ€™ genre to daring new places, with the academy not a place of growth and exploration but an extension of the stifling sexism of the time, as the witches learn little more than button-sewing and flower arranging. Frances, desperate for more (including solving her brotherโ€™s recent murder) stumbles deeper and deeper into NYCโ€™s magical underworld, learning about her own power and t

EU to keep โ€œgreenโ€ gas and nuclear labels. (Is this finally going to happen)

Source: https://euobserver.com/tickers/154213

The EU Commission is going to stick to labelling gas and nuclear power as "green" in its taxonomy for investors, EU financial affairs commissioner Mairead McGuinness told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Wednesday. "We may be able to tweak the proposal in one place or another to address some objections, but we actually have limited room for manoeuvre", she said, after Germany, among others, complained about the labelling decision.

Judge allows healthcare system to prevent its AT-WILL employees from accepting better offers at a competing hospital by granting injunction to prevent them from starting new positions on Monday

Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge Mark McGinnis granted ThedaCare's request Thursday to temporarily block seven of its employees who had applied for and accepted jobs at Ascension from beginning work there on Monday until the health system could find replacements for them.

Each of the employees were employed at-will, meaning they were not under an obligation to stay at ThedaCare for a certain amount of time.

One of the employees, after approaching ThedaCare with the chance to match the offers they'd been given, wrote in a letter to McGinnis, that they were told "the long term expense to ThedaCare was not worth the short term cost," and no counter-offer would be made.

How is the judge's action legal?

A Cunt's Bans post for 26 Nov 2021, you're all getting it

G'day cunts, today's the day where the mods, too lazy to do the honours themselves, have decided to employ the otherwise unemployable talents of yours truly in producing compelling demented writeups on a gambling forum. This is where those who have no money gamble with the only thing they have left, their sentences. You knew this day was coming, and now its time for a cunt to write up a bans post. Lets dive into what's otherwise known as the Guinness book of fucking retards.

#New Bets

With a 42% gain this month, its no surprise that a lot of cunts have jumped on board the IHL train that is apparently leaving the station. They better hope the journey goes a bit better than The General

Onwards and upwards, lets take a harder look at our new shroomers

Well, this month started with /u/psychedelicinvestor1 taking a bunch of DMT and quote "had many entities contact me and instill information that a global war is coming up so get prepared". Obviously, the best way to get prepared was blast every subreddit he could with hotcopper, stockhead, and ladbible articles about IHL doing a clinical trial. He even got the top post on /r/all at one point with this worldnews post.

Verily indeed, /u/username-taken82 informed this hyper-spammer to put up a bet for their excessive claims, to no response. The account has now been suspended by reddit. So it goes.

Enter our less mushy brained shroomers, /u/Sulmar has won their bet on IHL dropping info on their NASDAQ listing this month. They are still due for a 1 month ban if IHL does not commence trading on the NASDAQ by the end of this month so he's still fucked. His third micro dose means he's got an upcoming $5000 donation to charity if IHL does not hit $1 by the 19th of Dec.

Reaching just to the peak, u/ayrexxxx survived their [IHL bet of reaching $0.

Have seen some people try and ask for wrestling in generals Mount Rushmore, but since thereโ€™s so many areas of wrestling to cover, I feel like itโ€™s just impossible to quite narrow it down to 4 for wrestling as a whole. So I want to break it down for multiple companies, and in honor of ROHโ€™s last show for a while, I want to know whatโ€™s your ROH Mount Rushmore.

For me, I think itโ€™s Jay Lethal, Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, and probably either Jay Briscoe or Nigel McGuinness. Arguments are likely there as well for Homicide, Cabana (never the champ but had an undeniable impact), Christopher Daniels, Punk, possibly Adam Cole and even Austin Aries. I was on a train the other day when two Swedish men sat down next to me

The two introduced themselves as Sven and Olf. Olf in particular was wearing a t-shirt with the USSR flag on and boasted a cap with a hammer and sickle on, so I assumed he was an avid communist. I asked them if either of them knew where I could get alcohol on the train, and Olf piped up:

"If you go to carriage 4, you can get a guinness, you idiot. You can also find a stella in carriage 6, dumbass. There's also someone microbrewing in the front of the train, but he looks stupid."

I was a bit taken aback at how mean Olf was, but I thanked him for the information. Soon after, when he got up to go to the bathroom, I asked Sven what the deal was with his friend.

"Don't worry" he said.

"Rude Olf the red knows train beer."

Reactionary and Toxic Greenpointers

Who is behind all of these Greenpoint-themed anti-bike/anti-pedestrian Instagram accounts that keep popping up, such as โ€œIndigenousPeoplesofGreenpointโ€ and โ€œNBKmemesโ€? Their posts are often classist, transphobic, and generally reactionary. They also post photos targeting specific activists. The neighborhood is also now covered in ugly posters complaining about efforts to make McGuinness Blvd safer and a planned homeless shelter. Are these the same people who vandalized Open Streets barricades earlier this year? It seems bizarre that there is never a name attached to any of these things. Iโ€™m wondering if itโ€™s a very small group of people who are boosted by people who donโ€™t even live in Greenpoint.

I GOT MY IRISH CITIZENSHIP!

My grandparents immigrated from Ireland back in the 60's. They're from Galway and Ballybay. My father was born in Ireland in 1963 but they went back to America within a year of him being born. I'm from Boston (lmao)

Due to this it was pretty easy to get my Irish citizenship.

I'm incredibly happy about all of this. I don't know if I plan on moving over to Ireland but I'm glad I have an alternative to this country. I get worried about where it's heading sometimes so having a plan B is a lot of peace of mind. I never really identified as "Irish american" and I'm not too fond of Irish flag tattoos, or drinking guinness on Saint Patrick's day. Not quite my scene..

ANYWAYS, that's all. I'm fuckin psyched dude

[US-MI] [H] TPB's and HC's [W] Paypal or Listed Stuff

I'm back again. Again. AGAIN. What up?

I have four IKEA Billy Bookcases of TPB's and HC's that I'm going through shelf by shelf.

I'll calculate Media Mail shipping based on weight. I ship only to the US.

I'm mostly looking for Paypal but I'll also trade for the following stuff in collected format, no singles; Donny Cate's Venom OHC's, Fraction's Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen?, Rucka's Lois Lane: Enemy of the People, Rucka Wonder Woman (both runs), Hickman X-Men (beyond the first HoX/PoX TPB), and IDW TMNT Vol. 13 and up.

In terms of singles if you have Alan Moore WFH Image stuff (like, I'm talking Badrock v. Violator type stuff here) or Mirage or Image TMNT and you want to trade, let me know.

Been busy for a while. You know how it is. Back at it. We're in the "J's" now, plus I found a random stack of stuff in my basement and, as usual, there's some cheap stuff at the end.

Here's the pics!

Justice League of America Vol. 1 - The Tornado's Path HC - Start of the Metzler/Benes run. - $6

Justice League Vol. 2-3 HC's - The second and third HC's in the Geoff Johns N52 run. Why don't I have Vol. 1? Beats me. The Villains Journey and Throne of Atlantis - $10. If you want this and the other JLA book above call it - $12

Justice League: Generation Lost Vol. 1-2 HC's - The Brightest Day re-imagining of the Giffen/DeMatteis JLI. 24 issues by Judd Winick. It's OOP. It's expensive. - $50

Kick-Ass Vol. 1 HC - The series that started it all. Millar/Romita. You've seen the movie. You've seen the second, less good, movie. There's a billion other series now? Maybe Netflix owns this? Whatever. - $6

The Last Resort TP - Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray. Zombies on a vacation island. That's it. - $5

The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and The Legend of Luther Strode TP's - The world is introduced to Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore. - $10

Monster Zoo TP - Some Image OGN from Doug TenNapel, the Earthworm Jim creator? - $4

Morning Glories Vol. 1 TP - Nick Spencer's Image series that came from that time period where everything was supposed to be like Lost? I think? - $4

[Games] World of Warcraft (Part 4: Cataclysm) - How Blizzard tried to revitalise the world's biggest MMO but instead sent it into a shocking downward spiral

You can read my VANILLA, BURNING CRUSADE and WRATH OF THE LICH KING posts here.

This post is pretty short compared to the others. There were a number of smaller dramas like the banning of swifty or item duping or WoW closing in Iran, but I struggled to cobble them together into anything worth reading. I was getting into a bit of a rut with this post, so I cut my losses and posted the topics I've finished, rather than leave it unfinished forever.

#Part 4 - Cataclysm

The Leaks

Cataclysm didnโ€™t just contain controversy. For the first time, an expansion was the controversy. So we need to go right back to the beginning to figure out how it all unfolded.

MMO Champion has always been one of the largest platforms for WoW discourse outside of the official forums. And it was here, on the 15th of August 2009, that Cataclysm was leaked. World of Warcraft was no stranger to leaks โ€“ there had already been half a dozen, each promising a different vision of WoWโ€™s next expansion - but they were rarely this detailed, which lent these particular leaks a certain credibility.

In short, the premise was this:

The ancient dragon aspect Deathwing (one of the only big baddies left from the original Warcraft games) had broken free from his prison in the centre of the world, and had used his enormous power to tear Azeroth to pieces. The continents from WoWโ€™s first release (Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms] were going to be totally overhauled with new visuals and new stories, as well as the addition of player-flying.

Five new zones would be slotted in around the world too, where players could level from 80 to 85. Each new zone had an elemental theme, which would continue throughout the expansion. They included the lore-heavy Mount Hyjal, the expansive underwater world of Vashjโ€™ir, the dark and atmospheric subterranean [Deepholm]( https://i.ytimg.com/vi/k

Anything parked here will be thrown out. No exceptions.

This one will be short and sweet because it just happened. Full disclosure, I witnessed this event but was not an active participant.

I work in an industrial setting and there's a big electrical box in one particular area that the electricians needs to get into frequently and with urgency. It goes all the way down to the floor so anything in the way will prevent access, so one of our particularly reactionary supervisors posted a notice to prevent people from leaving pallets in the way. The phrasing was a bit extreme but since most people could be expected to react in a rational manner should an issue come up, nobody thought it was a big deal.

Well, somebody parked a pallet there with a big crate on it around the size of a coffin. I don't know what's in it, but it's addressed attn: the head of the lab and has customs paperwork sitting on top of it valuing it at just shy of three quarters of a million dollars.

About an hour ago the electrician called the supervisors' office on an open channel on the radio, so about ten or fifteen people heard the exchange when he asked what to do about this pallet in the way. Everyone reading this has already guessed the answer.

We also all heard him try at least twice to talk him out of it, but he was just talked over. Our big trash bin is attached to a permanent compactor, so anything that goes in there can expect to be crushed within a few minutes.

I took the liberty of turning it off and pocketing the key to it, which I'm going to give to a supervisor with a more level head at shift change. In the meantime the garbage is going to just pile up because the crate is indeed upended into the compactor.

I'd say obediently throwing away an expensive piece of equipment qualifies as MC, and he'll have a ton of corroboration when the shit hits the fan.

I'll keep you updated.

Update: SOMEBODY CRUSHED IT. The compactor is now jammed, possibly dead. The platen is sitting at just enough of an angle to be alarming and won't move forward or back.

The supervisor in question is pacing around the area right now. To his credit, he's not trying to blame the electrician, but whoever put the pallet in front of the electrical box is probably getting written up. Possibly me too because there is absolutely video of me taking the key.

I kind of feel bad for the supervisor because I don't think he realizes the full damage he's done. He's freaking out about the damaged compactor.

Because people are asking, I will share that

[AEW Dynamite Winter Is Coming Spoilers] Some stats for the competitors in the AEW World Title Match

I was curious about the records of Hangman Page & Bryan Danielson after the match yesterday & this is what I came up with. I'm using Cagematch for these stats as it's the most comprehensive place I could pull info from:

\"Hangman\" Adam Page

Tonight was the first draw in Hangman Page's career. It was also his longest singles match by a significant margin. The previous longest match was:

  • AEW All Out 8/31/19 Hangman Page vs Chris Jericho AEW World Title Match 26:16

He's only had a few non-singles matches in his career that went over the 30 minute mark with those being:

  1. AEW Revolution 2/29/20 Adam Page & Kenny Omega vs The Young Bucks AEW World Tag Team Title Match 30:06
  2. CWF Mid-Atlantic Ultimate Survivor 11/20/10 The VA Bombers (Adam Page & Jason Blade) & Jason Miller vs Marcellus King, Ric Converse & Xsiris Six Man Tag Team Title Match 30:24
  3. AEW Double or Nothing 5/23/20 The Elite vs The Inner Circle Stadium Stampede Match 33:59

He was in few gauntlet or Royal Rumble style matches that went over the 40 minute mark but I don't believe he was involved in any of those matches from start to finish.

\"American Dragon\" Bryan Danielson

Bryan Danielson on the other hand has had at least 34 draws in his career so far (There were a few with no time listed so I excluded them from the results below). The first was:

  • TWA 10/4/99 American Dragon vs Spanky Time Limit Draw 10:00

That however wasn't his shortest time limit draw. The shortest was:

  • WWE Smackdown 5/17/11 Daniel Bryan vs Chavo Guerrero Time Limit Draw 5:00

Here's the results for the other draws under an hour:

  • 4 fifteen minute time limit draws
  • 8 twenty minute time limit draws
  • 3 twenty five minute time limit draws
  • 8 thirty minute time limit draws
  • 2 forty five minute time limit draws

As for the sixty minute time limit draws prior to tonight he had a total of 3 all of which occurred in 2006 in Ring of Honor within the span of 3 weeks with those being:

  1. ROH Fight of the Century 8/5/06 Bryan Danielson vs Samoa Joe ROH World Title Match
  2. ROH Epic Encounter II 8/25/06 Bryan Danielson vs . Nigel McGuinness B

Triple Bless Brewer Build

So, this build idea is simple, we are going to buff our allies with the most "bless" effects we can get, giving your fellow sharpshooter up to +3/+12 to hit!

For the race pick Hill Dwarf, using Tashas customizing options to add +2 wis and + 1 in cons. With point buy your stats will be something like this:

Str 09 / Dex 14 / Con 14 (count as 16 for HP thanks to H.Dwarf racial) / Int 13 / Wis 17 / Cha 08.

For background I choose Clan Crafter, you are an old and grumpt Dwarf Brewer who loves to enjoy his beer while talking about how things were better in the past! One night after drinking a little more than you should, you had visions of your God, telling you that if you don't move your hairy ass from the chair and help a very specific group of adventures, things would get bad!

The level progression is:

1 - Peace Cleric At level 1 you already get Double Bless, aways try to pre-cast Emboldening Bond and use Bless in the first turn.

2 - artificer (nothing to see here)

3 - artificer Now you got access to infusions! Get Mind sharpener to never fail concentration checks and Homunculi Servant. In combat the Homunculi will serve as a mini Spiritual Weapon, helping with attacks and bonus action use.

4 - Artificer Alchemist! You developed a secret beer formula that make your allies think they are invencible! Use 2 or 3 of your spell slots to make Guinness Bottles (bless potions), that are best served moments before a fight. Finally the triple Bless is online, give it to your hard-hitting allies! (Flavour other potions with other drinks or Beers, like Red Bull for the flying one).

5 - artificer Grab Fey touched feat with Bless. Your WIS is now 18 and since we are using spells for potions, a free Mist Step and free Bless are awesome!

6+ From now on you are free to level up the way you want, I suggest just putting everything in Cleric, after getting cleric 3, you should replace the Homunculi servant for Spiritual Weapon, freeing the infusion for enhanced Shield (+1 to CA).

Recommended Magic item: Amulet of Health

Hope you guys like the idea and the Char concept, let me know if anyone played it! Cheers
