[Seriouspost] Why is it that so many portrayals of characters are criticized for being offensive but Mini-me from Austin Powers received little to no backlash?

I mean really, this genuinely boggles my mind. There are a lot of movies and shows that get absolutely shredded in the media for how they portray women/gay people/people of a certain ethnic group but Mini-Me was a million times more dehumanizing than almost any other character I could think of but the general public seemed to care very little at all.

Don't get me wrong, it was funny as shit but it's sort of hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that an intelligent human being with thoughts and feelings had to actually rehearse those scenes. There's literally a scene in one of them where Dr. Evil had him on a leash and said "Oh I caught me a marlin!" as he tugged back on the leash like a fishing rod to keep Mini-me from ravenously eating some chocolate like an animal.

He literally could not even speak and was often thrown around like a rag doll for laughs, lol. I really don't think you could have degraded the guy more than they did if you tried. If you had portrayed any other group even a fraction as bad as they did him, it would have been a PR nightmare but I guess the studio figured it was still funny just because he's small.

Is there a "Tier list" of sorts that ranks the characters' power based on lore?

So I'm new to BlazBlue, having bought Central Fiction on sale a few weeks back. I'm currently forty something hours into the game and am having fun. The story had me quite lost for a bit, but after a bit of reading in the in-game lore library, as well as checking the wiki every now and then, things've started to make sense for me.

I've yet to finish the game, but I'm curious of what the power scale is meant to be like for these characters, lore wise. At the early parts of the story, I thought Ragna was meant to be an absolute beast, though he's got a habit of getting his ass kicked it turns out.

I won't need exact measures of power. I'm happy with just a vague idea, like for examples characters A, B and C being "Top tier", while charactrs D, E and F being "Mid" and so on.

Lore-wise, which characters do you think are at the top of the power-list?

Listing the strongest characters in a verse and explaining their rank has always been an interesting topic to me. How would you rank Sekiro's characters? Here is my list:

  1. Divine Dragon - Not really sure if he should be counted for the feats he's shown in his boss fight. I'd put him 'above' all, purely because of the tremendous effects it's presence and power has on Ashina.

  2. Wolf/Sekiro - The playable character. Has the power and skill to defeat pretty much anything on his own. Has slayed Genichiro, Owl, Sculptor as a Shura/Demon and Isshin in his prime. Note: His position in any ranking should be counted as pretty ambigious, since true deaths seem to be part of the lore, too. Thus, Wolf may essentially cheat his way through any situation.

  3. Isshin(Sword Saint) - Speaking of Ashina, this guy is a f*cking goat. The lore behind his dialogues and how other characters speak of him just says it all. He aint called the Sword Saint for nothing. He beat the crap out of the Interior Ministry and terrified them till his last days. Hell, even Owl, another fearsome swordsman seemed to respect and slightly fear Isshin, even when he was on his death bed.

  4. Lady Tomoe - The lore behind this mysterious woman suggests that she is almost every bit as strong as Wolf and Isshin. She was Genichiro's mentor and an outhbound of Takeru, the Divine Heir pre-Kuro. Got Isshin nearly killed.

  5. Sculptor - Seeing how Emma and Isshin speak of him, you'd think he was quite the monster. And he probably was. No doubt the toughest enemy the Sword Saint has faced, right after Tomoe and Wolf. Later on, he becomes a host for the flames of war and transforms into a literal DEMON, which DECIMATES the Central Forces. A lot of his attacks would make it look like he is even stronger than Isshin.

  6. Owl - One of the greatest shinobi, Wolf's foster father and mentor and a decieving son of a bitch at that. Offed Genichiro off-screan in the Shura Ending, seemingly without taking much damage.

  7. Genichiro(Way of Tomoe) - Isshin's grandson. The guy who manages to kick the ass of every new player. Though he is quite pathetic when compared to DoH and Isshin, he is fearsome in his own right. Like, Wolf, he is immortal or rather, extremely resiliant to damage. Much of Tomoe's techniques seem to have been inherited by Genichiro.

  8. Corrupted Monk - Guarding the Fountainhead Palace gates is not easy task and I'd imagine you'd have to pretty fearsome in order to be chosen for the job.

  9. Guardian A

List of characters, weapons, and skills that some have considered to be power creep

List of characters, weapons, and skills that some have considered to be power creep

A few months ago was when we first started hearing people throw around the term "power creep." They were mostly brushed aside, but the offenses got worse and worse, and now we have the current storm of backlash that's happening. Now, most of this is actually directed towards the fact that Ayra is being released on a banner that's not focused on new units, or that there was no indication beforehand that she would be pullable. Honestly, I don't mind that too much (though it's quite irksome, I'll grant you that), but in any case, this post is not about the circumstances of Ayra's release, but about the units, weapons, and skills themselves. So let's get into this list.

Disclaimer: I don't necessarily think all of this is power creep, but I have seen people suggest each of these things before. This will be in order of release date (given as YYYY-MM-DD)

Mixed Stat Boosting Skills (2017-03-30)

  • overshadowing: unmixed stat boosting skills

I'm talking about skills like Spring Chrom's Attack/Defense +2, or Spring Lucina's Swift Sparrow 2 (which were the first of this type to be released), and much later on, there were things like Rally Attack/Speed or Spur Defense/Resistance. It's not really a problem, and I don't think I've really seen any complaints about this, but it is putting two level two skills together to get a level three skill (not a level four skill, if such a thing exists). Still, HP/DEF+2 is only worse than DEF+3 if you expect to be hit more than three times by a physical attack (which is quite a lot in today's OHKO meta), or if they would've done 1 damage with HP/DEF+2 but do nothing at all to DEF+3 (a marginal case and one that shouldn't even matter to a battle even if this situation arises).

Bride Cordelia (2017-05-30)

  • overshadowing: Takumi, Jeorge, Klein, Setsuna
  • Stats:
HP ATK SPD DEF RES BST
36 35 35 19 22 147

This is by far the least defensible claim of "power creep." The idea is that she has more attack any other archer, and only two points less speed than the fastest archer, at 35 and 35. (Takumi, Jeorge, and Klein have 32/33, 32/32, and 31/33 attack/speed, respectively; only Setsuna was faster but also much weaker at 28/37). The thing is, this is all redistributed from her defensive stats; she has, within the standard rounding error, the same BST as all of them (all five units have 147 or 148 BST). So, like

I was watching the deep 3 when the commentator mentioned that if marth vs doctor mario was in real life, marth would dominate. If not marth, then fox and falco because they have guns. Which comes to my point. What would the tier list be if they had the powers of their respective games?

Top tier for kirby though, from what i can tell he never dies in the anime/games and just twirls around a bit, and he can suck anything up. A close second would be mewtwo.
