Great documentary on Lake Malawi and lots of cichlids. My insomnia kicked in last night and since my tank was dark. I started looking for something to watch. I broke down and bought it. Very interesting watch. It was great to see the dive scenes and see what the gangs natural habitat looks like. I might have to play with the tank some this winter and redecorate some. It's very cool to see every one of my fish in their natural state.
My understanding is that this is a very rare species in the aquarium trade. Even the very extensive, oddball-filled MonsterFishKeepers.com proper only has 43 posts/threads about this species, with the vast majority of those simply suggesting it or pointing out its rarity as opposed to speaking of experience with it/seeing it on sale.
Additionally, when I purchased mine from Big Al's in 2018 under the impression that it was the (much, much, much) more common featherfin squeaker, its holding tank had no name/price label and I had to ask if it was on sale, suggesting it was a one-off rare trade-in as opposed to what was left of a fast selling shipment. Have not seen any for sale at Big Al's since during those 3 years.
So my question to all the Monster Fish Keepers (especially enthusiasts of oddballs and rare fish): Any of you who have been able to keep, or at least see on sale, this species? Or do I stand nearly alone in owning it?
My LFS has limited options and I'll need to stock by ordering online. Looking for the, good, the bad, and the ugly lowdown on online distributors. Let me know if you've had a good or bad experience with any in particular!
