Hi! So I hope I'm ok in posting this, and this is the right sub for it, but basically, I've absolutely fallen in love with this breed, and when the time is right, I would love to adopt a Cavalier of my own! Not sure whether I'll get a boy or a girl, will probably just decide when I go to meet the dogs at the breeder/rescue
My only previous dog experience was a short haired Jack Russel Terrier I had as a kid. Loved him like crazy, but I know he needed a lot of walks and playtime with as much energy as he had. I think Cavaliers aren't as demanding in that regard, but they need a lot more grooming
Anyone have/had this breed before? Advice for someone in my position who's looking to adopt one? Any and all answers appreciated!

I posted here yesterday with a question about a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeder I was looking into. After getting a lot of helpful responses and doing additional research, I'm not sure if I should get this breed of dog because of their high risk of health issues.
For anyone who owns a Cavalier, what are your thoughts on this? If I buy from a reputable breeder, does the dog still have a good chance of living a long, high quality life despite health issues?
Does anyone have recommendations for similar breeds? Below is a summary of characteristics I am looking for:
-Small dog (I live in a small apartment in the city)
-Ideally a sweet and affectionate personality
-Ideally has a low risk of health issues
-I would love an active dog I can take on long walks
-I am willing to spend time training the dog, but I also work from home so ideally I would like a dog that isn't extremely hyperactive and would be able to be quiet while I am in meetings, etc. Of course I understand that during the "puppy stage" this will be difficult.

I currently leave for work at about 6:30 and might start needing to leave for work at 5:50. I have an hour lunch (12-1pm) which I could visit my dog(work is 7-8min away) I get off at 5 though. I work mon-fri and was wondering if this gave me enough time to interact with the breed to keep them happy. I have enough free time to walk and play with the dog as necessary, and am willing to abandon some/all of my free time to care for a dog. Plz let me know if I'm ok to get this breed or if I should consider another or not own a dog at all.
Hi everyone. We have a 5 year old Cavalier king Charles spaniel male, neutered. He has no other medical conditions (he had gastric issues 2 years ago but it resolved after introducing raw diet). 1 year ago he fell off the bed and at first we thought that he had a concussion as he had nystagmus. He was given medication and it cleared up by the end of the day.
Fast forward to today, I wake up and see that he is in our bed and is just staring at me. I take a closer look and his head is tilted and eyes are moving like crazy. Try to slowly put him down on the ground, he can't sit/stand or anything, head tilting to the side. We drive him to the emergency vet, she confirms that it is (most likely) brianstem compression and the nystagmus is uneven, the right eye moves upwards while the left moves sideways. He is given painkillers, vitamin combo and an anti-inflammatory. Fast forward 12 hours and he is back to normal, no signs of it ever happening.
So basically my question is, has anyone had any similar experience? What is the outcome if the symptoms get more frequent or they get worse? Is it manageable with medication?

My Cavalier has been home with me for 3 weeks and the past few days some of his daytime naps have been reaching 3-4+ hours. He also slept a solid 11hrs straight last night (little dude peed for a solid 10sec when he got to his spot in the morning! 😅). I assume his increased sleep is due to a growth spurt. Any other ideas or concerns?
He also the past few days has been getting to his “time for a nap” level of tired from playing/being awake in about 45-60min, but had previously been relatively okay to play/be awake for 60-90min. I also assume this is from lots of growing and teething and adjusting going on. Any other ideas or concerns?
This past week I started enforced naps in his crate and started following a 1 up/2 down routine. What a game changer! He’s been getting around 18hrs of sleep each day this week after the first two weeks being less structured (oops!). He goes to bed around 7:30p and will sometimes wake around 2:30a then 5:30a for potty breaks, but not always.
Any thoughts or feedback welcome!
We have a 3yo female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She's got a great personality and generally deals fairly well with other dogs, she spent a lot of time at a doggy daycare when she was young so she's been around other dogs though doesn't love them.
On and off lead, she is normally fine interacting with dogs at the park or walking around the block. However, if we sit down at the park (e.g. to have a picnic) or stand around outside a shop/sit at a table at a restaurant, she becomes extremely territorial when other dogs walk past or approach: she will growl, bark and try to chase the other dogs away.
Does anyone have advice on where this behaviour might be coming from and how one should try to deal with? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
