Karaoke Revolution was a fantastic series and the beginning of vocal scoring in video games. Not only did I become a better rhythm gamer because of it, it was also how I learned I could sing. It's wacky over the top animations, outfits to pick from and songs to unlock, the glowing on your character when you got a 2x multiplier. I loved all of it, which is why it was a shame that despite that all the engines for the series (even the Glee ones) are great, the series pretty much went downhill and Konami just stopped caring after a while.

Another issue was that all my favorite songs were scattered across games, having to memorize different engines and swap out discs. So I put my thinking cap on. I made a project similar to what I did for Disney Sing It, make a mod bringing all the series worth of songs into one game. So out of all the engines I chose to do this on, it was the Party Engine.

Karaoke Revolution Party was the last updated engine made for the series before Harmonix shifted their focus on Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and it overhauled many of the complaints in previous games. While this may have been easy in concept, it required over 200+ hours of backtracking, redoing over and over, editing and replacing files. I learned file types of GC, PS2, Xbox, Wii and 360 during this time, pushing myself to find information for a series that wasn't popular enough to warrant full modding. However, Guitar Hero 2 used similar formats, making it easier to learn from the experience of that game.

The final result of it was managing 100+ songs from 6 games each in two games. For PS2, American Idol took the first half, American Idol Encore took the second half. However, getting the games to work on my PS2 was considered a huge pain for me. That lead to doing the Gamecube version. Gamecube was similar, disc limitations so I had to split it in two. I took what I learned from my PS2 experience, applied it to the Gamecube version of Party, and after a week of adding and changing files, I was able to successfully do it again.

Why am I spending so much all for a Karaoke game? Simple, this game changed me as a gamer, just like rhythm games changed for many others and how they were able to learn those skills. Now, I can play all the best of Karaoke Revolution together on an updated engine, with very little swapping of games (only having to swap for the other batch of 100+ songs!).

Maybe you are like me and like to sing but don't like the Karaoke opportunities we have here in the west like Karaoke bars where 90% of the singers are pros or some local bars / pubs with Karaoke nights where 90% cant sing and troll everyone. For people like us the most popular Karaoke forms in Japan are much better. Sing at a box with some of your friends or even alone while eating cheap snacks and drinks. Karaoke Joysound now finally brings this to people's homes and it is a totally different story from everything before. It features over 14.000 songs! More than any other home Karaoke ever and more than Karaoke bars in my country have. The Japanese version has songs whole albums from 1990s bands which only got popular with 1-2 songs so if you love Japanese music they have everything. English selection is also extremely good and I expect it will get even better once / if a western release happens. It also features all features you expect in a Japanese Karaoke box, uses Mobiles (through QR) as remotes which is genius and besides having video game background movies it also features a large ensemble of stereotypical Japanese Karaoke stock movies! I love it! It is hard to play since getting Japanese E-points is really difficult currently (got them through my Japanese in-laws credit card...) but if you find a way and can at least read Japanese its an incredible experience. I hope it comes to the west soon for everyone to enjoy it! Its really a quantum leap.

Is it true they're going out of business? Last time I was there they had 3 or 4 beers tap out with no replacements and the only time I've ever seen that happen is usually when a bar isn't replenishing because theyre shutting their doors. This was non a Saturday night too...

#Lianhuan-wha?

Japan is famous for manga. What you might not know is that China also has its very own hown-grown comic industry. While today it takes a lot of inspiration from manga, China's comics industry actually got its start in the 1920s with little pocket-sized books printed on cheap paper known lianhuanhua (that’s the most common name, anyway).

Now, “comics” is kind of oversimplifying it here. Here’s what your typical lianhuanhua page looked like, and you’ll probably have noticed that they look a bit closer to what we might call a picture book. And there’s a reason for that: China in the 1920s was still in that awkward halfway point between literacy and illiteracy. So, lianhuanhua had to accommodate for the fact that a lot of their readers weren’t able to, y’know, read. Hence, big images with small text underneath.

These comics quickly attracted a large, lower class and largely illiterate reader base across the country. Now, obviously this was too low-brow for self-respecting book shops to carry. Not that the target audience could afford to buy books anyway - that’s why most lianhuanhua were distributed through unofficial mini street libraries. You’d pay the vendor a couple of cents, pick something that interested you from their stand, and sit down on the little benches set aside for readers. Once you were done, you’d return your selection and either pick up another or go on with your day.

Lianhuanhua were made covering just about every type of story. You might find folk tales, adaptations of popular novels, operas and more being coming out of lianhuanhua publishing houses. They did a roaring trade until a couple of things happened that would force the industry into decline for decades:

• War-related rationing/material shortages
• Government censorship
• The Cultural Revolution putting the kibosh on any media that wasn’t propaganda (fun fact: movie production basically stopped for 10 years)
• Literacy rates improving, which kinda defeated the main selling point of lianhuanhua

From what I have read about South Korean politics so far it seems that the country's politics is very strange and surreal. Namely because of how the country's politics has begun to intensely define itself by a certain issue. That issue is feminism. I do not understand a lot of what is going on but would also like to know more, hence why I am making this thread.

My understanding of the issue is as follows. South Korea well into the latter half of the 20th century maintained a deeply patriarchal social structure. During divorce proceedings, children were always given into the custody of a male partner. Marital rape in South Korea was only criminalized as recently as 2013 following a ruling done by the Supreme Court of South Korea. For South Korean women, there seems to be a widespread belief that the country's patriarchal structure, consumer culture, and beauty standards are oppressing women.

Fast forward to 2017, and the South Korean president, Moon Jae In of the liberal DPK wins the election. In doing so he receives overwhelming support from young Koreans, both old and young. And to begin with, he is strongly approved of by young voters both male and female.

A trigger point that caused the anger of a lot of South Korean women to rise to the surface was the murder of a woman in a restroom of a South Korean Karaoke bar. It is this action that is considered a key igniting moment for the country's anti-misogyny movement. This murder triggered mass demonstrations in the country. In 2018 the feminist movement would further be bolstered by the Me Too movement and that year, the "Free Corset" movement was formed in which South Korean women boycotted beauty stores as well as cosmetic procedures.

Resulting from this, a backlash arises from a massive amount of South Korea's young male population, a large majority of which identify as strongly anti-feminist. The country since then has seen many gender-based crimes gain increasing notice, such as Semen terrorism, (The practice of men secretly ejaculating onto women, their belongings, and items.) For men, their concerns around feminism are voiced in the sense of being seen as "Guilty until proven innocent." During all this the incumbent, president, Moon Jae In, made an effort to align himself with the country's feminist movement.

#SIGN UPS OPEN

Due to time and connection concerns, players from Europe are preferred, but we do have a bunch of non-Europeans playing with us.

#When do we play? The campaign will happen on weekly sessions, every Sunday starting January 23rd, from 18 to 22 Central European Time (CE(S)T). Please keep in mind this is more like a marathon, a campaign usually lasts ~3 months, though most won't live that long.

Due to past experiences, we will not be posting the sign-up form here, instead, you will have to join the r/europe discord mentioned above where you will find all relevant links in the #campaign-info channel. We are doing this to increase the likelihood of players actually showing up since in the past people would sign up through reddit but then never show up to the game, leaving their assigned Nation unplayed.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
