My employer gave me senior responsibilities with less than junior pay, delayed my raise for 7 months, then gave me a raise so small that it didn't even cover inflation. I quit and ruined their projects.

Okay so this happened half a year ago but I wanted to share.

A little back story: I am in tech, living in a very expensive city. I have a ton of student debt, and after I graduated with honors it took me more than 2 years to land my first job. I had to learn an entirely new skillset within those 2 years in order to even get the job, during which time I was suffering in retail.

With that in mind, when this contracting company offered a job, I accepted it with a pay rate that was too low because I desperately needed a chance to get out of retail and into my career.

They trained me for about 2 weeks when I joined, but the skills they taught me were completely irrelevant for the client they assigned me to. My very first task? Refactor an entire code base because the person who came before me left a ton another. I worked harder than ever to make sure I did a great job, because I wanted to show them I deserved that job.

When I eventually finished that task after about 9 months, they heaped all kinds of praise on me. They were happy with my work, and the client company I was building the code for was impressed. I was happy because I really wanted to eventually work for that client.

And then, due to budgetary reasons, they took me off that contract and assigned me to another one. Everyone I built relationships with and built trust with was gone, and nobody knew what I was capable of anymore. It was for a client I didn't care about at all, but this time I was part of a team. The problem was that over the course of 6 months they gave me more and more responsibilities.

By the end of that period of time, I was the lead developer for a team of 7 people who didn't know what they were doing. I was involved in 3 projects and constantly being pulled into meetings despite being asked to deliver the majority of code for my team. I was so deeply involved in the client company that I actually got my hands on a document that laid out how much money they paid for each contractor. I found out they were paying my company for my services. It was OVER TWICE AS MUCH as I was earning.

And I hadn't seen a single bonus or raise. Meanwhile my wife wasn't working, so we were struggling to get by. I brought up all of my accomplishments with my boss, how hard it was to afford things and even brought up things like glass door to show how much less than average I was making. I asked them to give me the just a little less than the average for the country (which is way less than the aver

Hey Juniors, got a rough time frame for you to plan your college applications. (From a Senior)

I've applied to 31 *very tedious, do at your own risk* this fall and used the common app, coalition app, UC application, and MIT application.

Filling out Activities and Info on portals: 4-5 hours

Common App/Coalition App Essay: 8-10 hours

Supplemental Essays: Mine took almost 50-60 hours

UC Application (if applying): 10-15 hours

MIT Application (if applying): 8-10 hours

I also submitted a STEM Research supplement to almost half places (not required): took around 10 hours (to prepare and submit)

Financial Aid (if you want it...includes FAFSA, CSS, IDOC, Supplemental Tax Forms): 15-20 hours

Scholarships (I've applied to 6-7): 10-20 hours

Total Application Cycle: 120-150 hours

PS: It depends on you at the end. Some people write essays faster and some don't. Also, supplemental essays are quite different at each university. You could reuse 'em if the question prompts are similar in some cases to optimize time.

Tips:

  • Procrastination is an extra 10 hours plus. So, you might wanna add that up too.
  • Make spreadsheets/notes/docs to efficiently manage and always organize your application stuff consistently through folders/etc. Will save you a lot of time and errors!

Any other queries, you're welcome.

I noticed a bunch of kids online that I have been talking to dont really like to do homework.

Don't we all though???

nah these kids are rich and will pay you to do stuff. Peak rush was may of last year, college kids in basic level math and history and gov are stressing and paying hundreds for essays and such. I got in contact and started making deals and starting relationships with them.

Within like 3 weeks of finals I made 2k with about 30 hours of work put in

now im a high school senior already admited to college and im big chillin just telling you all about how you can earn money just sitting around doing precalc homework for 20 bucks a pop every other afternoon

(also this isn't offering work but anyone interested can hit me up and i got a whole team of smart kids who don't want to fliip burgers working with me to get their money up.)

I do not mean, HTML, CSS or JS. More-so, what concepts, ideas that take no skill or usage but knowing would work wonders?

For example, knowing what HTTTPS stands for, how stuff works even in a general sense. What are good things us new people can get a grasp on the even programs like The Odin Project might not cover but will help.

Applied for a junior developer position and was given a senior level problem in hacker rank for an assessment.

Is this normal ? The job said junior level. That problem on the test was definitely senior level. I ended up not being able to do the assessment which sucks. I emailed the recruiter and told him it was way above my level unfortunately and maybe I will re apply when I get more experience. Now I feel like I need to practice more coding before I apply places again so I don't feel like an idiot.

This is what the question was. I could not find the original question. This was someone's solution to the airport gates problem. https://github.com/gaohannk/InterviewCpp/blob/master/fidessa/MinimumGates.cpp

EDIT: I haven't even taken data structures and Algorithms yet in school. I switched my degree a couple months ago from computer technology and security to CS so that's why I'm not as skilled as you might think I should be. I really only started programming a couple months ago. I code every day for hours and I'm not giving up until I get where I want to be.

Also I'm sorry I said it was a senior level problem. The only reason I said that was because I saw this problem somewhere else online and it said it was a senior level problem.

English Teachers of Private Junior/Senior High Schools

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone who is currently an English Teacher of private JHS/SHS could share their experience leading up to getting the role.

I am currently an ALT (first year) with an initial curiosity in transitioning to teaching at a private JHS/SHS in Tokyo in the future. I don't have a degree in education. I only have previous volunteer experience teaching ESL students. Should things work out (and I'm still interested in such path), I would then like to hopefully obtain a "special license".

In particular, I'm interested in knowing:

  1. What kind of work did you do prior to becoming an English teacher of a private school?
  2. Are ALTs generally able obtain these jobs?
  3. What can I do now to improve my chances?

I would also love to hear your story/experience in general. TIA!

How to deal with a junior hired as a senior?

My question is basically the title, but I will tell you the whole story so the picture is clear.

I got hired in a startup where I was the only developer, but as the project evolved, the company hired a new senior developer that joined my team and started working together with me in the project.

At the beginning, I thought he was actually a senior by it's curriculum, but as he started pushing code and I reviewed the PRs (I gladly added protected branches to the repo, otherwise he wouldn't even ask about PR and just push code, because at first he didn't know why he couldn't push the code) I realized that he is a totally junior, because he didn't know basic stuff like declaring variables with the correct case (he would declare class with camelCase, while the standard for the language we are using is definitely PascalCase).

After realizing this, I thought at first that I could just teach him, like a normal junior, but I would need to teach so many basic things, that I felt like I was losing time having to review it while I could have done myself, and also, if you hired a senior, you don't expect to need to do that. But even feeling like that, I did try to teach him but it got me to the point that if I didn't say in the PR "do exactly like this, just copy paste this code" he would do it wrong and I would need to review it again and suggest new changes.

But there's more.

Because the project was new and there was a lot of new features to come, he would start working on new features, but would always start it with the worst implementation possible where we would write a lot of new horrible code and I would need to review so many things and even things I didn't know about which I would need to research to figure out if that was a good way of doing or not.

When he started working one new features that I haven't started, this guy became a spaghetti code machine that I was trying to stop while developing my own features.

The reviewing process became a hell, because I would basically add a bunch of comments on the PR on almost every file and this was slowing me, the project and everyone down.

So after this hole story, it comes to a point where I need to find a solution, and it comes to talking to the manager of the project, but I have no idea what to say.

I don't want to say that the new guy is bad, or that he is totally not a senior and the company did a bad hiring process, because it would cause a huge conflict and I have no idea how this guy or the manag

[CO] Promoting a junior employee over a senior one

I’ve chosen to promote an employee who has 6 years of experience over someone who has 13 years. Both are very good and often exceptional at their jobs. They both knew this position was open and had a full 6 months to show that they were ready. The less experienced one took the initiative to take on more responsibilities, while the other one worked as usual.

Of course the senior employee is angry and demanding to know why she wasn’t promoted, but HR told me I’m not allowed to go into the details of the selection process and say why one candidate was selected over another.

She said she can’t continue to work here and claims I didn’t give her as many opportunities this summer as the promoted employee (not true). She also has friends on staff who are likely going to disagree with the promotion decision. How can I get the team to continue working successfully without being resentful of new leadership? And how can I help set up the newly promoted employee for success in the face of these challenges?

When is it appropriate for someone in a senior role to make less than a corresponding junior?

Obviously, I'm the senior. We're on the same team, but I've been at the company longer and have more responsibilities. I'm sufficiently self-aware to know if I were underperforming, and that's not the case.

To be clear, this is not a knock on my teammate, who is excellent and deserves every bit of their salary. And obviously higher pay in infosec is great for everyone, unless you're a penny-pinching boss. But my employer doesn't seem willing to let the rising tide lift all boats, just the new ones.

I haven't brought it up with my manager yet. I've heard some things from others who have tried for additional compensation in the past outside of the performance review cycle.

Based on that info, I have a feeling they are going to try to diminish my skills and contributions first to soften me up, before trying to make it right at the lowest possible cost. Not sure this is a recoverable situation at this point, even if I were to get a raise. I feel disrespected and undervalued, not sure that will change. I know I have other options.

Would appreciate any insight from someone who's been in a similar situation. Or recommendations/advice on how to approach my current employer.

It doesn’t matter that the mid, senior or principal level engineer has more experience and/or knowledge than the junior. If they can’t explain a coding problem or design to a junior engineer on your team. They are not a good fit for your team.

Sparked from some comments I saw in CSCQ about being interviewed by people more junior than them like it’s a bad thing.

College senior with 2 years left. Is it okay to apply to internships as a junior?

Hey all,

I'm technically a senior in college but I have 2 more years. Long story short, I transferred from community college but because of my major requirements + taking a leave/doing part-time school, I'll be doing my undergrad for a total of 5 years.

Because of COVID, I wasn't able to secure a summer internship when I was a junior. I noticed that being a senior automatically filters me out of a lot of internships, since many cater to sophomores/juniors. Because I have 2 years left, would it be alright to apply as a junior? Or is this considered unethical? I feel like it's always awkward explaining my situation to people that I'm a senior but I still have 3-4 semesters left in college. I appreciate any advice on this matter

Interviewer more junior by title, yet more qualified for the senior role I'm interviewing for?

Had interviewed for a "Senior Engineer" position, where one of the panel interviewers was an "Engineer" by title.

After doing a quick work history check on LinkedIn (and assuming that this info is accurate, ie no work gaps), turns out this Engineer actually has a bit more work experience than me, and that his work experience is a lot more directly relevant to this position than mine is (he has been with them for several years).

Which begs the question, why isn't this position being given to this Engineer?

Could this be a red flag for advancement opportunities with this company?

(Perhaps he did apply for the role internally, but I would suspect that this would pose as a conflict of interest, being one of the panel interviewers?)

Secondly, this was the first time I've had someone more "junior" (albeit, just by title) as one of the interviewers. He didn't have much involvement (only asked a few technical questions at the end), but I found it a bit odd. The only thing I could think of was for the other interviewers to get a glimpse of how I would work with other team members.

I'm still scratching my head over this, curious to hear how some of you would interpret this, or if others have had a similar experience and found out after they joined what the reasons were.

Thanks!

EDIT: Engineer title is current as confirmed via email and is not just a LinkedIn assumption.

Any Juniors/Seniors see a huge decrease in skill after covid hit?

I don’t know if it’s just my school but before covid hit, our band was very competitive and had an environment that encouraged serious practice and improvement to get to the next level in skill. After covid, it just feels like a shell of its former self. The freshman and sophomores don’t practice nearly as much as they used to, and it seems like less and less people care about improvement. The overall standard for what’s considered good playing in our band has decreased significantly and many freshman and sophomores don’t realize just how far behind they are in skill level and mentality compared to previous years.

We’re a 6A UIL state marching band and we’ve been making state for the past 20 ish years. However, this year was the closest we’ve ever gotten to not making state. Our entire marching season it just felt like the mentality wasn’t there and people never took seriously or understood the difficulty of making state. There was also just a blatant lack of respect for the upperclassmen and section leaders who were trying to hold the band together.

Is anyone else experiencing this stuff in their bands or is it just me?

However, this particular type of work was the report for a research that came out slightly empty, so I am not necessarily proud of it. I was hoping the senior associate had some feedback for me. But she said she amended it (slightly) and i should send it directly to the Partner. Does it mean the Senior Associate wants to show the Partner how bad I am, and let the Partner scold me?

She’s done that type of backhanded communication before, so now i never know what she thinks and wants.

Difference between Junior, Mid, and Senior Developers?

Matagal ko nang naiisip ito pero hanggang ngayon unsure pa din ako kung paano mo maaassess ang isang tao if they're considered Junior, Mid, or Senior Devs without the job title.

Ang basic idea ko is Juniors are the ones na kakapasok lang sa industry and need ng training/encouragement/exposure to further their career. Mids yung mga familiar na sa standards ng tech industry at nabubuhay na sa yaman. Kumbaga katumbas na nya yung 2-3 juniors. Seniors yung tumagal na as mids tapos naisipan ni boss na ipromote.

Kidding aside, paano ba talaga masasabi if jr/mid/senior level ka na as a dev? I've seen and heard people na mabilis na promote from junior to mid to senior in just 3 years. Then may mga tumatagal na mid for 6 years without promotion.

Senior engineers, how many questions from a junior engineer is too much?

Often, I feel quite guilty at work asking questions almost every day, at least 85% of my days I've been blocked and I've been at the company for 6 months now.

Anyone have any tips on how I could improve or deal with this guilt?
