A list of puns related to "Jeju language"
I see that it has become almost a consensus in the linguistic community to classify Jeju as a separate language, which together with Korean forms the Koreanic language family.
But, if Jeju is a separate language, then shouldn't most of other Koreanic dialects also be classified as separate languages?
Mutially intelligibility? There are plenty of other Korean dialects that are not mutially intelligible with Seoul Korean.
Genealogy? Jeju, like all surviving Korean dialects, is a descendant of Middle Korean.
Sociolinguistic attitude? Most of the Jeju speakers themselves view Jeju as a dialect.
So what makes Jeju special? What's the reason to give it a language status and not to other Korean dialects, especially when the speakers themselves view it as a dialect?
Does anyone here speak the Jeju language? I am interested in its similarities between it and Korean. I don't speak Korean, I just wanna know if they are similar
The Wikipedia page for Jeju has four sentences on Jeju history before 1948, and while the Tamna page has a lot more, it seems to say basically "The Tamna kingdom existed, then Korea took over and there were many rebellions until the colonial era." Does this indicate that the Jeju natives were culturally different than their Joseon rulers?

Yi San and Royal Noble Consort Uibin Seong, you rock!
I wrote this discussion and analysis for the following groups of people:
(1) Those who are curious about "The Red Sleeve" because of the buzz and hype about the drama;
(2) Those who have watched "The Red Sleeve" and have become interested to know more about the lives and times of Yi San aka King Jeongjo, Royal Noble Consort Uibin Seong, King Yeongjo, Queen Jungsoon, Princess Hwawan, Hong Deok-ro, Lady Hyegyeong, etc;
(3) Those who have become interested in watching "Yi San" because of "The Red Sleeve" but are intimidated by its 77 episodes; and
(4) Those who love romance dramas but aren't fans of historical dramas.
If you belong to the 4th group, please do give "The Red Sleeve" and "Yi San" a chance. To give you an idea of how incredibly romantic these dramas are and how they will make you cry your eyes out for the next three months or so, here are scenes from "The Red Sleeve" (JPG and GIF) and from "Yi San" (GIF).
You can also watch the official trailer for "The Red Sleeve" and an MV for "Yi San" (but watch only up to the 3:09 mark of the MV because the rest are spoilers).

My husband and I are both primary teachers, American, and have 1 child (+1 on the way). We are currently in Hong Kong, and likely won't stay much longer due to their oppressive quarantine/border restrictions.
Can anyone recommend countries or areas that would provide qualities such as these:
When I look at this list, I tend to think of Switzerland, but I want to open ourselves up to more opportunities. I am hoping this community might have some places I wouldn't think of.
Now there are idols that speak (or know to speak) satoori (dialect) from different parts of Korea, e.g. Gwangju, Busan, Jeolla, Yangsan, Jeju etc., but are there idols (or celebs) that speak Seoul satoori?
An example of Seoul Satoori is shown by actress Ko Ahsung, and another example of Seoul satoori is in this interview.
Now as Seoul satoori was widespread since before the early 90s (I would guess the decline of it at around turn of the century), people that grew up in Seoul before that ( ~ to 80s babies) would naturally adopt it. When Ko Ahsung spoke in Seoul satoori it really reminded me of Sung Yuri or Uhm Junghwa, '81 and '69 liners respectively.
I'm specifically asking for idols that might not have necessarily grown up in that era but still speak it because they might have gotten it from their parents or something.
As someone really interested in this kinda stuff, I find the Seoul satoori really pleasing to the ears, especially the way the sentence melody flows.
Examples:
Standard language : μ’κ³ λ μ, Seoul satoori μ‘°νΈλ μ
80s era μμΈλ§ν¬ replaced every μΌ with μ° e.g. λ§μΏ° instead of λ§νΌ, -νλ instead of -νλ or λͺ¨μ©μΈ instead of λͺ¨μ΅μ.
Also with sentence melody, I'll take the example "κ΄μ¬μ΄ μμ΄μΌ λΌμ". The standard language would put the intonation at "κ΄" and "μ", while Seoul satoori puts the intonation on "κ΄" and "λΌ", and "pulls" the "γ £" in "μ¬" a bit longer.
Another example is "-ꡬμ¬"instead of "κ³ μ" (e.g. "μλ€κ΅¬μ¬" instead of "μλ€κ³ μ") or "-λ°μ¬" instead of "-λμ" (e.g. "νλλ°μ¬" instead of "νλλμ").
Also, using the "μ" honorific form more than the normal (e.g. "νμ ¨μ΄μ" instead of "νμ΄μ").
Add the above and you'll get "νμ ¨λλ°μ¬".
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Hi! In light of the recent VTL, I figured there might be many considering trips to Korea but might be hesitant because theyβre not sure about how the situation is in Seoul rn or how the tourist scene has evolved.
I moved to Korea last year at the very beginning of the pandemic when the first few cases hit Daegu. I havenβt been back to SG since lol (got vaxxed here too) but anyway I hope to give some insight to those who are on the fence!
1. How are social distancing guidelines in Korea right now?
Seoul and the greater metropolitan area (Gyeonggi Province) is Level 4. Other cities (Busan, Jeonju, Jeju) are Level 3. Assuming everyone in your group is fully vaccinated, you can have up to 8 people (or 10 for Level 3, as of Oct 15). Level 4 also means that all establishments have to close at 10pm but restaurants can continue to do takeaway/delivery. Mask mandate continues.
2. Are the tourist spots still open?
Myeongdong has been very badly hit. Donβt bother. The shopping streets in Ewha and Dongdaemun (areas that had tourists as their main customer base) are pretty quiet. But life in other areas is basically quite normal and business is as per usual. Iβd say donβt worry too much about that - just look for spots that locals go to. As for attractions (theme parks etc), still open, just running at less capacity. I saw pictures of Everland being super full last week.
3. I wanna travel to Jeju/a different city (instead of Seoul). How do I make that happen with VTL?
You have to isolate for a day until your negative test results come back. Technically if you can make private transport arrangements, you can go to whatever city you want after you land and isolate there. But of course itβs going to be challenging going straight to Busan or Jeju (practically impossible) with private transport from Incheon Airport. So you should stay a day in Seoul/somewhere nearer to Incheon first until the next morning. Then youβre free to go.
4. How does contact tracing happen if I visit a cluster?
If itβs a big cluster, there will be a public health alert / disaster message thing sent to all phones in the administrative area of that particular establishment to advise you to get tested (free). And if you visited at the same time, you should also be contacted by the local health center to get a mandatory test (free). Theyβll get your contact number because before you enter any restaurants / shopping mall etc youβll have to sign in, like how SG does TT I supp

In English, the word 'Eliminate' has multiple meanings depending on the context, including the meaning 'to get rid of/kill someone'. So when the second clause of the player consent form states that "A player who refuses to play will be eliminated", there is an immediate sense of uncertainty on the exact meaning. But the Korean word used here is νλ½/tallak, which is used exclusively to mean "fail in/drop out of/be eliminated from a contest/tournament". With that in mind, it is understandable (story-wise) that the players had less reason to suspect the deadly nature of the games when signing the form.
I think the first scenes with Sang-woo and Ali in episode 2 did a good and efficient job in fleshing out Ali's character as a migrant worker. When Sang-woo says they're at Yeouido, Ali asks where Yeouido is. Yeouido is one of the main financial districts in Seoul, so his lack of knowledge of such a common location tells the viewer that he barely stepped out of the area he lived/worked in (I think Ali said he lived in Ansan, which is on the outskirts of Seoul). Initially, he also repeatedly refers to Sang-woo as Boss, until Sang-woo gets uncomfortable and tells him not to call him that. Compared to English, the Korean language has a different and quite complex system to refer to one another. This may be a part of the reason why it's common for migrant workers like Ali to just stick to calling people Boss, μ¬μ₯λ/Sajangnim in Korean, to avoid any potential misunderstandings (and the boss is probably one of the few Koreans they have regular contact with). Later on in the games as they got closer, Sang-woo tells Ali to call him ν/Hyung, which has the standard definition of 'older brother', but it's also used between male friends who are close. And it is all the more tragic when the betrayal occurs, and Ali's last words were calling for Sang-woo 'Hyung'.
Saebyeok is from North Korea, but she has no noticeable North Korean accent during the series. Only in brief moments, such as when she was talking to her younger brother and the broker, are there some hints of an accent. There's only two moments that I can think of where she highlights her North Korean background. One is when she's talking to Deok-su before Game 2: "You know what we call people like you in my hometown? A revolutionary son of a bitch". Don't know if it's an actual North Korean term, but it sure sounds like one from

Anyone by any chance know of a place to get a gopro or the like?
For on, im willing to go to seoul to get one, for two i live in jeju and an annoying thing about living in korea is im 100Γ· sure theres a place to buy one on the island -- this is an outdoorsy place. But not knowing the language its such a pain to find anything. If you ask the local facebook group they always just say coupang or whatever.
Another annoying thing is, ok, id buy one online, but all the online stores source outside of the country too so youve got to pay for customs and wait for forever. It wouldnt be such a big deal if there was an actual korean store i could prder from, which im sire there is.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Iβm not sure how to begin but trying to get answers to this as no one seems to have a solid logical explanation.
When I was in High School (senior year) my brother (12y older than me) who is an architect asked for my help on a commission for a building model on scale, he usually only had me go and glue the smaller pieces that were boring to do and just bought some pizza and left me to watch movies on his couch, this time the project was a little big and he was going to pull an all nighter on me.
It was around 2 am, when I just started to surrender to the spell of the sandman and fell asleep, Iβm well known in my family and around friends for being the sleep talker, my wife constantly kicks me when I talk asleep, because sometimes I even sing, (bad shower singing). I usually am aware of what I am saying because I actually dream of the things I talk about when asleep, often it is just a blurry dream, but I know Iβm talking because I end up waking myself up when this happens, specially if I scream or go loud on a dream.
It was just around 3:15 when I felt a sudden move, my brother who had this pretty shocked/concerned look on his face had shaken me down to my bones in a rush to wake me up! I remember I was dreaming of a scene where different entities were surrounding some kind of altar with a person sitting in the middle and I was speaking in a language I couldnβt understand, by that time my brother was perplexed talking to me and asking if I was all right, he said I was speaking in Deutsch (language Iβve never learned or heard of), and I was chanting/praying something like βPlease save us all God all mighty forget our sinsβ
My brother knows German but he never spoke in front of me or my family on different languages than Spanish (we are from Mexico) and there were zero to no movies in my youth spoken in Deutsch, I pretty much only knew spanish and a little english back then.
The creepy thing is that He said I was pretty much going quiet at first saying other things and mumbles in Spanish, every word I spoke was a little more clear than the last one, until I was speaking fluently, random words of fear, like βapocalypse, shadows, deathβ as if I was just playing bingo with Halloween words, to this point it was all normal for my brother as I often did this, not with those choices of vocabulary though, but then, I stopped and suddenly started speaking Deutsch and pretty much screaming the prayers out loud. Iβm being honest, I cannot remember hearing myself

NOTE - POST UPDATED: The Google map vectorization update of my account was implemented yesterday(Dec 7th), so I am attaching a new screenshot of the Google map I captured.
Seoul, Incheon, and the surrounding area.
Seoul City Hall, Gwanghwamun Square, and the surrounding area.
Yesterday, December 4th, South Korean data on Google Maps finally switched from bitmap to vectorization. It feels like it's been 6 years and 8 months since April 2015. Now I don't have to write a dirty old bitmap!
However, there is still a long way to go since it has been updated only for certain users and IPs.(Car and walk navi system service still appears to be in closed-beta testing.) I don't have Google Maps vectorization, so I have to use it as a bit map, but it will be more convenient when it will be updated around January 1st next year after closed-beta testing is completely finished. Feel free to use Google Maps when you travel to South Korea! :)
- What's MORE comfortable after the update?
- What's LESS com

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
