Hypnic Jerks all night

Started tapering down as of yesterday which was horrible.

After the worst of the heart palpitations and anxiety ended I puked my guts out at around 2:30am.

Then felt good enough to try and sleep. And I was SO exhausted. But then every 30 seconds I would get one of those jerking/shocking things. Literally every time I started to sleep it would happen and wake me up.

How many days can I expect to have this happen? It’s 7AM right now and I haven’t slept in 2 days. Is there anything I can do to help with these?

For reference I was drinking roughly a 750 of vodka a day. Today I tried to keep down some beer tonight but kept puking it all up.

Has anyone suffered from hypnic jerks as a result of their caffeine consumption?

I drink a lot of strong coffee through the day. Every night when I go to bed, I'm usually wide awake still and trying to force myself to sleep because the caffeine is still in my system.

For years, I've had little jolts in my body just as I begin to nod off, but recently it has gotten worse - my entire upper body can now spasm to the point where I'm left sitting upright, or even completely rotate my body.

I don't think it's a neurological condition as it only ever happens when I'm falling asleep. That and the increase in severity matches a recent increase in my caffeine consumption. (I've switched from instant to ground coffee and have more cups per day).

Last night was the worst in ages, and I had a really strong takeaway coffee just a few hours before which I normally wouldn't do so late in the day.

Would love to hear if anyone else has experience with this, and if there was any improvement after going caffeine-free.

Constant hypnic jerks and nocturnal panic attacks

I try to sleep at around 3am everyday which sometimes ends up being an hour or so later. The weather has been dark, gloomy, and pouring rain the last few days which I’m hoping is the cause for all of this. This week, I have been waking up an hour into my sleep with a weird, indescribable feeling. My whole body feels itchy internally and just immensely uncomfortable to be in my own skin. I hate the feeling so much and I usually fall asleep a few minutes after. Today I took a nap at and I kid you not… I had around 8 Hypnic jerks until I woke up. It was a 3 hour disturbed nap that was so bad. All the body jerks were intense; one was me biting my teeth down very loud, another one was my leg flailing all the way up, and the other ones were my body and head just jolting awake. Please if you know why this is happening, I would like your help and advice. I have also been waking up confused with weird scenarios in my head and just very tired.

Hypnic jerks/hypnagogic jerks

Hi I am not sure if anyone can help with this but im at my wits end. On days that I excercise without fail I get hypnic/htnagogic jerks.

Not just 1 or 2 but like consistent over what could be hours.

Everytime I go from awake to the first stage of sleep my body jerks violently awake.

Sometimes it's mild, sometimes it's a violent spasm of my legs and arms.

Sometimes I awake to a pounding heart. The only thing that Sometimes helps is getting put of bed having a glass of water and trying again. But this is not a guarantee.

I am so over it.

Does anyone know anything about this? Or even if not this issue like what helps you with your sleep issues?

I've tried things like magnesium does nothing. I can't take any benzodazapines due to a previous addiction. Any natural remedies or suggestions or where I can find help.

Like what sort of doctor do I see for this?

Thank all.

Can CBD worsen muscle twitching and hypnic jerks?

I have insomnia, at this point it's from chronic fight or flight mode. As I fall asleep I get hypnic jerks or my brain will just decide to wake me up before I'm asleep. I also have muscle twitching all over my body 24/7. Naturally I tried marijuana, and found out right away that THC usually makes my anxiety worse, even in low doses below 1 mg. So I tried Delta 8 at a very low dose that wouldn't be enough for a high, it just made me sleepy. It worked a few times, and then I got very bad hypnic jerks. I sadly accepted THC just wasn't going to agree with me, because if I lowered the dose any more I wouldn't even feel the effects. I thought okay, I had the most success when there was a high ratio of CBD to THC, so I'll try a full spectrum CBD (CBD isolate does nothing for me). I've taken 30mg of CBD oil tonight and it's still triggering and worsening the hypnic jerks and muscle twitching. I find it hard to believe I'm reacting to that little THC unless I'm underestimating how much THC is in full spectrum?

I'm so confused why my body is reacting like this. I could understand being sensitive to THC but I've never heard of CBD causing muscle spasms, I've only heard great things about it helping this specific issue. I'm really disappointed, I've spent so much money on this, and I just want to understand why I'm reacting this badly to it.

There was one on discogs going for $150 for a while, but I passed on that because I thought that was a bit overpriced. At this point I should just wait until the next repressing, but I’m very impatient so any feedback is appreciated!! :D

Hypnic jerks, anxiety, jolts etc.

This post is my personal experience with these physical and mentally draining events as someone is trying to sleep.

A year ago my sleep started to significantly deteriorate after a few months of extreme stress and anxiety with respect to health anxiety. I was spiraling downwards without realizing the mental impact that it was causing me. I was going through a very detrimental repetitive process of trying to asses my health ailments on the internet which is something one should never do.

The week before the β€œgreat event” my sleep started to fail. I was waking every 2 hours but was able to get back asleep. My days were filled with constantly weighing myself (convinced I had cancer) and reading medical websites to convince me that my symptoms were confirmed.

I remember that night vividly. I had just closed my eyes and falling near sleep and I felt and even heard this zap like sound. But this wave of energy came from my chest and moved upwards through my face and out my eyes. It was scary as hell. I thought this was it.

For 2 months, every night this happened multiple times and my sleep got worse and worse. My body was also starting to jerk and twitch. Of course this sent more anxiety to my mind. It got worse and worse. At one week I hadn’t slept for 4 nights.

I called my doctor and broke down. I was a mess. My wife didn’t know what to do. I was in this huge void. I ended up at the ER 4 times. Convinced that I was losing my mind. I had test after test that came back normal. I was told it was all stress and anxiety. I didn’t believe these physical symptoms could EVER be brought on by that.

I was sent to CBT for 8 weeks by my doctor and started Lexapro. I also attended 4 months of in person counselling.

It gave me the tools to step back and think differently.

One night I spoke with my brain and told my brain it didn’t have to be anxious any longer. I spoke for hours and finally fell asleep.

Things got better and better and I’m happy to say that I haven’t had any jerks or weird zaps for 8 months now.

Looking back it is so easy to see that I broke down that it was anxiety that caused all this. I was in denial during this phase. But I was so wrong.

The best thing to do is have hope and recognize that you can break the cycle. Not everything will work the same for all of us.

But things can and do change.

I believe I experienced severe trauma from my loss of sleep and those sensations. I’m still scared of going back to that dark time and expe

Hypnic jerks, myoclonic jerks, twitching as soon as I try to sleep. How did you manage this? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Heads Up: I know this is long so bear with me, no TLDR will be provided (too difficult to explain so shortly).

Good morning everyone,

I have tried quitting kratom so many times ive lost count. In my opinion the absolute worst part of withdrawals is this restless feeling at night, your brain seems to just say "no dude, not tonight" even though you are dozing off, you still cant sleep.

Something that a portion of people get when going through withdrawals is this jerking/twitching restlessness and the most frustrating part about it, these always occur the minute you decide you want to get to bed and get some much-needed rest for your recovery.

So here are some of my questions, and trust me, I have tried my best to find these answers on this sub as well as elsewhere before resorting to making this post (Ill try to be as quick and concise as possible):

First Question:

As soon as I want to sleep, I get this feeling in my chest. When I feel this sensation in my chest, I know that the jerking is on its way and I may not get any sleep at all, 30 minutes to 90 minutes if Im lucky. However, unlike hypnic and myoclonic jerks, these jerks feel voluntary to me. So heres what happens, I lay down, get this sensation in my chest (like an anxious feeling), and to relieve this feeling in my chest I begin to jerk and the sensation is relieved, but only for a minute at most. Can anyone relate to this? If so itd bring me comfort just to know im not alone.

Second Question:

If you have had this type of feeling while trying to get some rest, what did you do to help remedy this feeling? Did you even have success trying to remedy this, or did you simply slug it out?

Third Question:

How good does it feel to be kicking your demons ass and having this great support network online?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thank you ahead of time if you commented. You guys really are awesome and I think its beautiful what you guys have created here, take care, and best of luck to all of you.

Can hypnic jerks(sleep jerks) and tinnitus be caused by caffeine withdrawal?

For months I have be struggling from a sleep disorder where hypnic jerks keep me awake for hours every night. A hypnic jerk is when your body gets jerked awake right as you are about to fall asleep. I also occasionally get muscle twitches during the day. This started shortly after I cut back on caffeine to 1 cup in the morning, usually half caf. I have yet to be fully convinced the issue is from caffeine withdrawal though.

I also developed occasional tinnitus and some other ear problems around this same time. This has been going on for months however I have never full committed to giving up caffeine, all I've done is cut back significantly. I will go a fews days without any but still have a cup of coffee or tea occasionally. Prior to cutting back I used to drink around 3 cups a day. If my my issues are caused by caffeine then I assume by not fully quitting I am only prolonging the issues.

Many have mentioned insomnia as a symptom but don't specifically mention the issue I am having.

Hypnic Jerk?

Bupropion has been working well for me (150mg once a morning and 100mg Sertraline once at night), hasn't entirely soothed the depression and the anxiety is still an issue, but it hasn't been bad at all. Better than prozac, which I had weird acid reflux issues with and caused jaw clenching.

I didn't really have any side effects from the bupropion or sertraline. Over the last week though as I'm falling asleep (at any time of day) I get these jerks and it feels like I'm being zapped. My lips feel numb a lot and my mood is generally pretty low. I woke up one night and couldn't feel anything except full body tingling, super intense. I'm not super worried, I'm attributing it to being more stressed than usual but wanted to see if anyone else had experienced similar issues.

Ashwagandha bad reactions. Sleep problems, hypnic jerks, anxiety

I took ashwagandha from 2020 early of december to 2021 end of march (KSM-66, 660mg at evening – 330 mg didnt do anything) to improve my sleep. It worked very well after few weeks: better sleep, better mood, lot of energy and motivation, but notcied some hypnic jerk before sleep, but they went in time.

After two months of use i noticed very mild symptoms: irratibility, ear rings, racing thoughts before sleep, feeling tension, sometimes one little move of my foot. The good sleep and good mood stayed, so i didnt suspect ashwagandha. When i tired to stop it, my sleep was disturbed, so i kept taking it, this was a big mistake.

After few months after a phisically active, very good day the night was hell: i slept just 3 hours because the hypnic jerks waked me up before the sleep onset. Next day everything changed: bad mood, anxiety, forget to breath sometimes, pressure above my temple, forehead tingling. I never was anxious before. I stopped it immediately and i noticed another symptoms: loss of appetite, low libido, lightsensivity, twitches during daytime in my whole body, problems with concentracion.

The hypnic jerks was better in time, and mybe my another symptoms as well. I started to take Valeriana, and it helped lot of symptoms gone , but it stopped to work after 2 months, and my anxiety was higher than before, and my other symptoms was back as well.

I still cant exercise because it increases my hypnic jerks. Alcohol increases my hypnic jerks after the hangover night for a few days, but i am on alcohol i feel myself normal again. This effect stays after a few days of use alcohol, and i my sleep is deeper on these nights despite the hypnic jerks. Magnesium, vitamins didnt help. My labtestes were OK. My thyroid were almost in level hyperthyroid, but after 2 months it was much better. My BP is higher then before.

Now i dont takeing anything, just Omega3, D vit and probiotics, and my anxiety is better, but sometimes i feel myself a little overstimulated. I am in this for almost 6 months. I saw a neurologist a week before, but she couldnt say any useful.

Is there anybody who had similar experience? It might be ashwagandha withdrawal? Ash is Gabaerg. Alcohol is Gabaerg, Valerian is Gabaerg. Maybe i destroyed my GABA receptors? How can i fix this? Which doctor can help?

Hypnic Jerks or Seizures?

36 M

  • Right frontal meningioma resection in June 2020 (grade 1, full removal)

  • First tonic clonic in Feb 2021 (no prior seizure history) was put on Lamictal. Said it was from scar tissue.

  • Possible absence seizure April 2021. Upped Lamictal

  • Multiple complex partial seizures in July 2021, ended up status epilepticus and in ICU in a drug induced coma because rescue meds, Lamictal, Keppra, Vimpat, and Depakote were not working. Came out of the coma seizure free. Went home on Depakote, Vimpat, and Lamictal.

  • September 2021, discontinued Lamictal because epileptologist said it was too small of a dose and not doing "diddly squat"

This is regarding my husband.

My question is regarding night time jerks/twitches. It never happened before his first seizure. Now, as he falls asleep (literally EVERY night), he twitches and jerks. Magnesium is normal.

It starts with finger tapping for a second or two, then a leg twitch, then an arm might fly up, and sometimes he'll have facial twitching as well. This repeats until he enters a deep sleep (when I notice him breathing heavily) and then they stop. If I touch him or wake him, he wakes up immediately and is responsive and normal.

It's scaring me because some nights his leg or arm twitch hard enough to shake the bed and it wakes me up and I think he is seizing. Sometimes its enough to wake him up.

I mentioned it to the epileptologist last month and he wanted to do a 2-5 day EEG with a hospital stay but my husband refused because he said our finances can't handle him being off work for that long.

For now, I'm stuck trying to record the jerks but its always dark when it happens and by the time I start recording, he is either awake from my movements or me turning the light on.

I'm just super scared he's gonna end up going through status epilepticus again.

I am experiencing nights of constant and never ending hypnic jerks

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has an information on what type of sleeping disorder I may have, as I can’t find anything online that resembles it. Recently I have begun to have nights where as I am trying to fall asleep I get twitches in random parts of my body. It can happen as I am either half awake or when I’m in the beginning phase of sleep. We’ve all had these β€œsleep starts” or β€œhypnic jerks” where we are tripped, or are falling, or something grabs us etc. my problem is that they become like a loop, I will wake up with a gasp, lie there for a minute, fall back asleep, wake up with a gasp over and over again all night long. It’s like having never ending subconscious hiccups. It really messes with my head and is pure hell. Trazadone seems to be only thing that stops this, but I hate that stuff as it has me sleeping for way to long, easily 14 hours, and makes me very groggy and hungover. Any info would be great!

sleep issues go away eventually - myoclonus, exploding head syndrome, gasping, hypnic jerks

I had an on-and-off relationship with kratom for about 2.5 years. Usually for 3-4 months at 15-30g per day, then coming off it either tapering or cold turkey. Then 1-3 months later I'd be back.

It always created disturbing issues with my sleep that I rarely saw expressed online, but do seem to occur for some small subset of people. It was useful enough to me that I just tried to ignore them, but my most recent run December-March was the worst. After a really bad week of this crap, I decided I was done with this shit for good. But the symptoms lasted for months afterward and I started to worry that they were permanent. FWIW, I took white or green strains about 95% of the time.

These symptoms included:- Waking up with a gasp. I wouldn't be out of breath though, and tested negative twice for sleep apnea. Often these episodes would include parts of my body spasming. I don't think they were seizures though - my partner observed it a few times and said it would be over in less than a second. This happened almost every night, usually multiple times.

- Flashes of light as I drifted to sleep that jolted me back awake. These were like hypnic jerks but much worse. The feeling I got in my head was momentary but terrible. This also happened almost every night.

- Waking up with my heart doing flipflops or vibrating. Thankfully this only happened 2-3 times, after very heavy doses the day before. Again, it only lasted about a second.

- Hearing voices or animals or other noises as I fell asleep. One time after a heavy kratom day I heard the word "trauma" whispered. Really spooked me.

- Sleep paralysis. This was very infrequent, and only seemed to happen with reds taken shortly before bed. I didn't actually mind this one because its great for lucid dreaming, but its obviously not good its happening.

- One instance of exploding head syndrome. Basically, I heard a very loud explosion as I was falling asleep. There was no associated pain or mental shift but it sure freaked me out.

- Limbs randomly jerking throughout the day, aka myoclonus. This was the main negative waking symptom. I've read it is associated with opioid toxicity.

I got tired of it and quit again in February. Then in March, my friend had a strain that I hadn't tried before from a vendor I never heard of. I had been off of kratom for 3-4 weeks at that point but you know how it is. Just two doses of that brought back most of these symptoms, and they were worse than ever. I later found out that an

A little worried I took to the internet to discover that these sleep jolts are called hypnic jerks and also found out there are ways you can worsen them: 1) sleep deprivation- well that's now just become a vicious cycle as the jerks themselves are depriving me and for the past week i havent been going to bed until the early hours of the morning. 2) caffeine- well tonight I've drank 4 cans of coke and being British finished that off with a cup of tea before bed. 3) exercise before bed- tick, I did a 5 mile run at close to max heart rate that I finished at half 10 tonight. 4) stress- well I played football with my mates earlier tonight and I dont like playing because I fear being hit by the ball, nevertheless I threw myself in and did have a good time. But as you can imagine now my night is filled with endless jolts depriving me of a sleep and visions of footballs hurtling towards my face! And worse still I also drank a bit of alcohol meaning I'll probably have a hangover in the morning with nought sleep! Pray for me

TL DR: Tonight I did the 4 main things that cause hypnic jolts (sleeping jolts) and hence why I'm still awake writing this at 3am in the morning!

Anyway now I'm going to follow snow patrols advice and just lay here. Updates in the morning if I'm not too tired!

Edit: update: I'm alive

Hypnic / myoclonic jerks? When do they go away?

*** I’m not asking for medical advice, just personal experience. I know these jerks aren’t dangerous, just frustrating, sleep-disrupting, and anxiety-inducing. Including my experience with meds in case others can relate***

So I’ve been sober 3 nights now, I was a nighttime drinker to fall asleep. I was given Ativan for withdrawal but I don’t really take it anymore since I have pretty much no symptoms. What I do get though, is hypnic/myoclonic jerks EVERY TIME I’m falling asleep. Without fail. Every five minutes a jolt will go through my entire body. I can fall asleep without meds, which is when the jerks happen, but I end up having to take a bit of Ativan to make them go away.

I don’t really want to be taking Ativan to sleep, so I wanted to hear from others who had these jerks when starting to get sober. Did they just go away at some point? How long did it take for you? Ideally I want them to just go away and sleep without taking anything.

Sleep is a huge obstacle for me staying sober, and these hypnic jerks are currently the worst part. So if you’ve had them specifically after getting sober (ik theyre normal once in a while but I mean every single time) please share your experience!! I don’t see a lot about them on here so I guess I just want to know I’m not alone in this. Alcohol is a pretty tempting solution

I’m going to try magnesium/potassium supplements at night first and then 50mg trazodone if that doesn’t work. I’ll update my post on how it went tomorrow in case anyone’s curious.

Update: I take a multivitamin every day but apparently it’s not enough. I took a European supplement I had on hand (300mg potassium, 70mg magnesium, 60mg hawthorn extract, 1.4mg vitamin B6) an hour before bed and no hypnic jerk!

RLS, PLMD and Hypnic jerks

Wondering if anyone has it all? What drugs helped? I'm talking every sleep start comes with strong jerks. If I do manage to sleep the PLMD will wake me. Before both of that I got to some how ignore the fact my legs are tormenting with crawling sensations and strong random pain. As I'm so sleep deprived I also have the jerks in the day with my brain trying to have micro sleeps.

I've been diagnosed with restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder some years back. Started off with a helpful understanding neurologist that gave me the outcome after doing 2 night sleep study. I slept a total of 4 and a half hours over the 2 nights. Tried a few meds that didn't work. Still there was more to try but then I had some young clueless neurologist took over. That was the end of my help as this doc said the data and symptoms doesn't relate to RLS or PLMD and that it most be psychiatric in nature. Basically at the time I was also waiting on my ADHD diagnosis that was in my records so basically pointing to ADHD being the problem. Anyway did get my ADHD diagnosis however obviously the symptoms are not remotely related to ADHD. So years later I'm getting no help for it and so far behind sleep my mind has broken in the form of depersonalization disorder. That is a symptom of stage 3 sleep loss.

So time to push for help again however it's hard when you feel no one understands you. Last time I was in the gp it was clear they don't get how sleep depraved I was. If they did then clearly I should of been classed as vulnerable covid wise as my immune system will be greatly hindered. My gp smiled and said I got nothing to worry about.

Crazy I'm in the UK so got free health care yet I can't find someone that can help me. Posting in hope someone has had it this bad and now better, give me hope please πŸ™

Increase in hypnic jerks, general body jerks.

Started using Codiene recently and noticed when I'm laying down my foot would spasm like a slight ankle bend, now it's turned into you know when you fall asleep, when I lay down and fall asleep I'm getting quite a lot of those full body jerks for a few seconds and sometimes the foot and sometimes some of my muscles spasm for a few seconds.. is this normal lol..?? And not like a seizure... But hypnic can't spell it hypnogogic jerks you know when your fall asleep for a second and the weird thing with my foot sorta like it just jerks down at the ankle sometimes randomly.. when I'm chilling on Codiene.. it isn't causing any like damage just bit concerned why?

Is it the Codiene getting into my system.. I'm dosing throughout the day soon as I'm up then bedtime etc..

Not even having that much throughout the whole day say 90/120mg.. the day .

Am I doing something wrong here? The effects work but I'm getting spasms lol?? Sometimes..

Thanks.

Sudden hypnic jerks/myoclonus triggers panic/anxiety 40-50 times a night and doesn't allow me to sleep.

Yesterday, I decided not to take the 5mg of Lexapro. I was only on day 4 but it was seriously messing me up and giving me extra anxiety and depression. I usually take it at 11 P.M.

Fast forward a couple hours later ... I can't sleep. I fall into that almost-sleep area and JUST as I'm about to lose consciousness, my muscle jerks shooting me with panic and waking me up. And this happens 40?50? Times before I gave up on sleeping.

It doesn't even have to be the jerks, I feel crippling anxiety right before I lose consciousness and the nasty heat feeling stays.

I'm not even particularly anxious about anything. I have depression and anxiety but today it's actually manageable before this crap manifested. So I have no idea what my body is doing and why.

I read that some people are prescribed Ativan or Xanax and wanted to hear thoughts or personal experience.

I'm so tired but I can't sleep.

Long-term hypnic jerks?

Anyone have long-term hypnic jerks? I get them nightly, especially when I first go to sleep, that’s the only time I struggle. I’ve had this sleep onset hypnic jerking now since January. It all started with Zoloft and I discontinued use the same month.

Is this what hypnic jerks feel like?

Good day everyone I'm hoping someone could let me know if if what I'm feeling at night while trying to sleep are constant hypnic jerks. I've been battling anxiety with no meds for a while and maybe it's finally catching up to me with sleep disturbances

Starting Wednesday night I began having some serious insomnia with 0 to 3 hours of sleep with what I feel may he constant hypnic jerks. As soon as I'm about to drift into sleep I have this Shock sensation in my chest. My limbs don't jerk around but It kind of feels like a jump scare with a bit of anxiety and this keeps happening all throughout the night until I get maybe a few hours if sleep.

A simple yes or no will suffice. I'm planning on going to the doctor to get this checked out.

Thanks in advance!

Why am I getting hypnic jerk when falling asleep?

I’m not stressed out or anything. But when I try to fall asleep hypnic jerk would stop me from sleeping. I have health anxiety problems in the past but these couple of weeks have been solid so far. It’s already 7 am and I can’t sleep! I have a presentation this afternoon.
