Contact bioassays were performed using live permethrin-sensitive S. scabiei var suis mites harvested from pigs and permethrin-resistant S. scabiei var canis mites harvested from rabbits. Results of bioassays showed that clove oil was highly toxic against scabies mites. Nutmeg oil had moderate toxicity and ylang ylang oil was the least toxic. Eugenol, a major component of clove oil and its analogues βacetyleugenol and isoeugenol, demonstrated levels of toxicity comparable to benzyl benzoate, the positive control acaricide, killing mites within an hour of contact.
The median survival times of permethrin-sensitive and resistant scabies mite populations exposed to clove oil, nutmeg oil and ylang ylang oil are shown in Table 1.
At all concentrations tested (1.56%β25%), contact with clove oil resulted in 100% mortality of permethrin-sensitive mites after 0.25 hours.
Permethrin-resistant mites died at the same time but required higher concentrations (β₯6.25%) of clove oil (Table 1 and Fig. 2AβB).
A dose dependent change in median survival time of permethrin-sensitive mites was observed when mites were exposed to nutmeg oil, with a very low mortality observed at concentrations below 6.25%. In contrast, permethrin-resistant mites were less susceptible to nutmeg oil with median mortality occurring only at 25% oil after 4 hours (Table 1 and Fig. 2CβD). Permethrin-sensitive and permethrin-resistant mites were both tolerant to ylang ylang oil, with significant mortality only occurring at the highest concentration tested. Of note, however, the acaricidal effect was faster in sensitive mites than in resistant mites (Table 1 and Fig. 2EβF).

Apparently eugenol is directly toxic to the liver and has been associated with liver injury and hypoglycemia from as little as 10-30ml of clove oil (however this study was based on infants who have accidentally ingested this amount, so it would likely take more to damage an adults liver). N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) was prescribed to treat this liver injury.
So if you do decide to use this stuff, make sure you take NAC beforehand and the day after. It's cheap enough and can't hurt to be safe. Also if you feel hypoglycemic (blurred vision, light headed, feeling weak/tired) afterwards, then have something with sugar in it like candy or a soft drink, followed by some slower releasing carbs from a meal.

Hey guys, I'm from r/nutmeg , I've been seeing a lot of posts about cloves/eugenol lately and wondered what it was about. Organic spice stores are pretty widespread here so I thought I'd give it a shot.
T+0:05, I ate 5 grams of cloves, ground them first and washed it down with a salty yoghurt drink, it masked the bitter taste of it really well and if anyone asks I can give a recipe it's really easy.
t+0:10, feeling a bit sedated, might be placebo or just tiredness from work.
t+0:40, not much difference I guess it was placebo at first, still waiting for it to kick in

isearched it and eugenol should be soluble in alcohol(1ml eugenol per 2 ml alcohol) so you could probably use that to extract it and then let the alcohol evaporate

Really curious to know about this. I read something of it on an obscure post on the Archive, mentioning the synthesis of 4-allylpyrocatechol by alkali hydrolysis of eugenol's methoxy moiety. If this did work it could make a huge difference. No more AlBr3/Pyridine!
The workers report 78%-89% yields (temp dependent, highest yield was at 25C) of hydroxychavicol from eugenol after 18hrs of reaction. No mention of inert atmosphere. Sounds too good to be true? I have everything except DMSO on hand already. Before I go out and buy some, is there anything glaringly wrong here?
