TIL about Karen Roberts, programming director at KTEH in the 80s and 90s and the driving force behind the programming philosophy at that station which brought shows like "Red Dwarf," "Doctor Who," and a wealth of anime to the the bay area long before that kind of content was mainstream.

Not sure if anyone else will care, but I just found out about Karen Roberts today and it blew my mind what an impact this previously unknown woman had on my life. And i had to talk about it somewhere, and considering KTEH was a local station, i figured r/bayarea might be the place to do so among people who might also remember it with fondness.

Before Toonami, before the sci-fi channel, the bay area had the PBS station KTEH, channel 10, bringing the light of the world to all the little nerds (like me) who were starving for something better to watch than sports and network sitcoms.

Under Roberts KTEH saw the broadcast premiere of Neon Genesis Evangelion in America, as well as the Tenchi series (both of which i remember watching there). She was also responsible for getting stuff like Red Dwarf (at one point KTEH actually aired some episodes before the went live in the UK) and Doctor Who and Eastenders. She basically built a little oasis in the bay area of weird unique television that wasn't airing anywhere else.

Unfortunately Roberts died many years ago, and KTEH was absorbed by KQED not long after. But man. This lady was responsible for so much of my childhood.

Oh, and she was also responsible for bringing British comedies like Are You Being Served to KTEH, which i watched religiously after school and jesus christ why did my parents let me watch this show.

My Medical Doctor, seeing my interest, asked me for some suggestions of books for introduction to philosophy. Please help

Some context: I just visited medical doctor about some ailment. We started talking and then I mentioned my deep interest in philosophy. He asked me for book recommendation. My idea is to get him started on a book/article which starts with all the seminal work in philosophy starting from Aristotle to Modern Philosophers. It's OK if they're multiple book. I apologize if I shouldn't be posting such a post, will be happy to delete.

ELI5: Why do my Bachelors and Masters say "Bachelor/Master of Science in Computer Science", but my PhD just says "Doctor of Philosophy" even though it's also in computer science?

I mean this question in a few different ways:

  • How did it come to be like this? What caused Bachelors/Masters to be divided into lots of fields and subfields (Bachelor of Science vs. Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, etc.), while Doctor of Philosophy remained pretty generic?

  • Is there any practical significance to this difference between Bachelors/Masters and PhD?

  • Is there a practical difference between my PhD in Computer Science and the PhD in Public Policy the girl sitting next to me received, given that both just say 'Doctor of Philosophy'?

Doctor Who and Philosophy: Bigger on the Inside -- Has anyone else read this?

I just started the book yesterday, so I am on the first section on "Personal Identity and the Doctor." I never took any Philosophy courses, so I am fascinated by everything as all I've learned about the subject has come through my own reading about philosophy... but holy CRAP identity and the Doctor?! The Doctor who regenerates over and over and over again!!

In short, I feel like my brain is going to implode.

It's probably just because it is late and I should really be sleeping instead of reading dense stuff.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else read it, had an opinion about it, or thinks I should sleep off my freak-out.

What are your opinions on the philosophies of the Assassins and Templars?

Biases aside, which do you think is the best approach to humanity's survival and prosperity and overall success as a species?

I'd always thought of the Templars as pretty generic bad guys until Assassin's Creed 3. After all, almost all of the Templars you kill end up being all 'mwahaha, power is mine and the strong rule the weak', more or less. Your targets are usually tyrants, or straight up a**holes that go around killing for sport and pleasure.

But Haytham won me over. The fact that, for one, we couldn't distinguish much between him and the Assassins in his prologue speaks to how similar the two groups can really be - Charles Lee was the same, until he met Connor in the forest and was suddenly a raging psycho bad dude.

It was Haytham's speech as he fights Connor that convinces me, and moments beforehand. Absolute freedom DOES invite chaos, because human beings are chaotic and cruel things. All an Assassin's idea of freedom does is either turn the world into a hellscape of disorder, or it just doesn't work at all. It's way too idealistic. All people have to be offered to live and make do is convenience, after all. So long as someone in power allows them that, and the illusion that they're the ones in control, then people are entirely content. Haytham is right - nobody wants responsibility. What do people do when things go wrong? They blame the ones in control. But what happens if they themselves are the only ones in control at all? They can't manage.

Humans need leaders for that purpose, and an Assassin leader that's true to their ideals isn't any leader at all.

Just thought I'd bring this little philosophical post up as I'm starting AC3: Remastered again, haha. Please don't take it too personally or politically.

Some of the buffs on the PTR are increasing the problems created by the current Blizzard's powercreep philosophy

Honestly more or less the changes in the PTR make sense and are steps in the right direction if you look at the current meta (even tho as most people said they are probably not enough) but wrong steps for the overall health of the game.

The problem is that they are short sighted and focus only on the current meta instead of the big picture where the biggest problem is the powercreep that happened in every role.

I will take as an example the Roadhog change to have 6 ammo. Yes, at the moment it helps in breaking shields but on the overall picture it adds more damage spam to the game.

Little changes like this is how we ended up in a situation where you feel that, as soon as you are not behind a shield/wall or constantly healed, you get melted even as a tank because there is just too much damage flying on the screen all the time.

The average damage and sustain levels have become too high for the health pools, they were designed for launch numbers, not for what we have now.

In my opinion Blizzard should reconsider their philosophy and try to addressed the issue by the root:

Bringing sustain AND damage back to a level where changes like this (and arguably Winston shield buff) are not need.

In turn it would allow to roll back a good number of the dps increase buffs that has been happening lately, specially in the GOATs era.

As an example, McCree time between shoots buff should have never been needed. McCree and Soldier were IMO good references of vanilla levels of dps overshadowed by the powecreep and it should have been other heroes sustain/dps nerfed down to keep that level viable instead of buffing them.

This would also help with closing the gap between sustained vs burst dps and make struggling heroes like Soldier and Winston more relevant.

What are your thoughts?

PD: thank you for the gold kind reddit user! Is my first one ever.

I'm surprised about the amount of attention my post got in the end, it's been very nice to read other people views on the topic and the direction of the game balance.

What does r/fitness think of my trainers philosophy?

This is from his email to me:

"Instead of focusing on creating the appearance of a healthy body, we focus on creating healthy habits and principles that can last you a lifetime. The goal should be enjoying yourself while doing the activities and have the healthy appearance be a byproduct or side effect, rather than the main goal.

I would suggest that we train for a month, and during that time reflect upon the things we do that you enjoy and reflect upon the things we do that you find challenging. And rather than using measurements for progress we set the goal to find physical activities you enjoy doing for the sake of doing them. I find that as a much more sustainable way of making habit and lifestyle changes."

As this is my first time getting a trainer, Im not sure if what he's saying is nonsense or legit? To me it sounds legit (focusing on the process and the goal will be met) but wanted to ask others.
