Diving into a strange cylinder underwater cave led to a graveyard under the ocean floor, and my girlfriend has remained there for 5 years.

I’m here, still thinking back to the clear memories I have of the events that occurred five years ago. I remember it like yesterday. When the soft voice of the love of my life, Christina, entered my ears through the headphones. But a disaster struck and screams took its place. All of this might confuse you, so let me explain what happened.

Me and my girlfriend are rather devoted to scouring the ocean floor. We just love the ocean and discovering its many secrets. Examining the exotic reefs for ocean wildlife, exploring forgotten sunken ships and helping the earth by picking up every small waste we could find. Occasionally saving a sea turtle from plastic waste and other ocean wildlife here and there. We were comfortable at sea; we had nothing to be afraid of. In fact, we prefer staying at sea instead of staying inland, or at least my girlfriend thinks so. She has a dispute with her family and just wants to escape somewhere, somewhere where she can find peace. And that somewhere becomes the ocean and its sandy floor. We were at the Australian coast near the Great Barrier Reef, scouring its vast corals looking for wildlife and taking in as many vivid colors as we could before mother Earth would do its deed and kill it. Thanks to humans slowly but gently draining the Earth of its power thanks to global warming. We had been there a week straight and enjoyed every single diving or beach trip we’d done. Both mine and her family are very fortunate and have a lot of money. So we had top tier equipment and even our own small underwater vehicles to dive deep into the darkness of the ocean. These vehicles wouldn’t be sold to just anyone, but her family had connections to their manufacturer.

The day before the accident, we’d faintly caught the glimpse of a shipwreck on the ocean floor, isolated from the reef long out into the ocean. We both got overly excited and decided the next day that we'd take our yacht and bring the underwater vehicle (we’ll call it the submarine from now on) with us to get closer. Since as we saw, it was far too deep for a human to dive, whoever would’ve tried that task wouldn’t be able to stand the water pressure. We planned out the next day and we eagerly went to sleep early, thrilled to find something new to explore.

We woke up on a whim and packed our things ready to head out. It was around 6AM in the morning and we headed out to the docks and loaded the boat with all the necessities. We checked to see if the submarine was safely secu

Diving bell in the shape of a cylinder lowered into sea water.

A diving bell in the shape of a cylinder with a height of 2.50 m is closed at the upper end and open at the lower end. The bell is lowered from air into sea water of density = 1.025 g/cm^3. The air in the bell is initially at 20.0C. The bell is lowered to a depth (measured at the bottom of the bell) or 82.3 m. At this depth the water temperature is 4.0C, and the bell is in thermal equilibrium with the water.

A) How high does sea water rise in the bell?

B) To what minimum pressure must the air in the bell be raised to expel the ware that entered?

So far, I've calculated the pressure at the bottom of the bell to be Pf = ρgh + Pi, with Pi being the atmospheric pressure, at 101.3 kPa.

Not quite sure where to go from here. I assume I need to use pV=nRT somewhere, but not quite sure what to do with it. PiVi/Ti=PfVf/Tf?

Thanks!

Does the volume of gas in a scuba cylinder change over the course of a dive?

I took a sidemount scuba course over the last two weekends. During the online learning portion, I got a question wrong on an exam that was based on this statement:

>The basic goal for gas management while diving sidemount is to keep the volume in each cylinder as close to the other as possible, and to ensure each cylinder always has sufficient gas to assist another diver.

I believe this statement is incorrect. The volume of gas in a cylinder doesn't change over the course of a dive, so it can't be a goal to keep them close. The pressure changes, and the mass changes, but the volume remains constant. I emailed the company and they said it was correct.

>The volume of the cylinder, as you stated, does not change. The volume of gas in each cylinder (expressed in L, determined by taking the liquid capacity of the tank in L times the pressure in bar), however, definitely does. So, the goal is to keep the volume (of gas) in each cylinder as close to the other as possible.

Volume times pressure isn't volume. It's mass (pretty much).

Is my understanding correct? Or, is it common to refer to pressure times container volume as the volume of the gas?

"Shallow" diving kits are unsafe?

Hi All,

See below as an example. https://scorkl.com/pages/what-is-the-scorkl

I have been told that if you dive with compressed air you should only ever use the full kit. BCD, reg, tank, weight belt etc.

Anything else is cutting corners. You either free dive or commit to full dive gear.

I was wondering why it is unsafe. Below are my thoughts.

  1. It is hard to control your buoyancy

  2. You use compressed air without formal dive training an certificate

  3. One of your hands will always be occupied

  4. It can fall out or get ripped off

  5. Uncontrolled accent and barotrauma

  6. No measure oxygen left

  7. Only one hand remaining to hold camera, check depth, use a compass, spear, loop etc.

What does everyone think?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Breaking a finger from the Cam Band Buckle

So, with my new Dive-Rite BPW, I managed to get my small finger caught between the cam band buckle and tank and fracture it. Happen to anyone else?

**Found out why this happened: After reconstructing the event I now see there is very little room to position the bands up/down on the steel 80 cylinder with the present tall boot, so it made it easy to get part of the band on the boot, making it impossible to close; thus, moving the tank strap up with just keeping a small amount of pressure on it caused it to clamp immediately once the strap moved from the edge of the boot to being directly on the tank and my fingers had not cleared the area, and when I say small amount of pressure, maybe 2lbs of force. The BPW was new for me, we literally had not been diving with it yet, so the bands were not as tight as I would normally like them, so it didn't take much force to close them. Lesson learned: I am not that fast at making a quick change to the strap while even holding a tiny bit of pressure and a shorter boot would make life easier, albeit not necessarily a problem, but it does highlight the majority of accidents are human error.

Weekly GX Map Discussion #11: Port Town - Aero Dive/Long pipe/Cylinder Wave

From the Wiki Port Town is famously known as an intergalactic trades center and the home of bounty hunter and F-Zero racer, Captain Falcon, who lives off the coast on a chain of islands. Port Town's architecture is marked by towering skyscrapers and pyramid-shaped office buildings, and the town is bordered by mountains. A giant construction robot that looks like R.O.B. in Famicom colors can be seen in the background on top of two buildings in F-Zero GX.

The 26th century is dominated by intense competition between planets for profitable interstellar trade. Due to this competition, other planets have invested huge fortunes in the creation of massive space harbors to increase traffic; Earth's answer to this resulted in the creation of the Port Town space harbor. The Port Town space harbor has been built with the newest technological and aesthetic refinements in mind. This multilayered structure is centered around a massive structure towering three miles above the ground and is the largest space harbor in the universe

So Captain Falcon lives in Port Town!? 0.o I didn't see that coming. Would that mean the first half of the story mode is in Port Town? Hm, any ways, Port Town! One of the most we

Prelate Iwardion shook some loose feathers out of his left wing as he stared at the screens in front of him. Unlike more peaceful times in the recent past, the windows along the walls of his Throne Room no longer delivered the brilliant light of the Onathi Star. Instead, sheets of silver-grey metal were drawn down like armoured curtains to block any photon lances from hidden snipers. The entire room was lit by the glowing tiles in the ceiling, and by the vertical strips that framed a massive half-tree in the center. The tree trunk was cut in half vertically, and inset into the middle of the split-trunk was a long black screen that was shimmering with symbols and indicators, representing the Onathin Military ships in orbit over Onathi. The remnants of the Sovereignty forces that were defending Henfir had just arrived in the system, and were currently undergoing repairs. The Forsaken forces were bound to attack Onathi, as soon as they had finished destroying both Henfir worlds.

However, Prelate Iwardion’s attention was focused on the metal curtains. Each sheet of silver metal flashed as they displayed live video feeds from the Sovereignty Security forces that were currently deployed within the Governmental Palace. The Stalwart Claw rebels who had failed to assassinate him were still in the Palace, and were last sighted

Candy-Cane

β€œBeginning debrief of captured asset. Asset was identified during our investigations of the fugitive known as Candy-Cane. Asset is a female Oricon youth. Approximately 14 of their local years old. Asset still refuses to comply and identify herself beyond providing us with the nickname Seemba.”

Agent Gane Barcatii sighed, letting the air out through the membranes along his back. The action naturally pulls in air through the thin slits running down the sides of his thorax. The air tasted of his sweat build -up and the sterile chemicals that had been doused on his clothes while in the decontamination chamber. This was why he preferred breathing through his mouth, and why he refrained from sighing as much as possible. Today was an exception. He was stressed, tired and he just wanted things to be over and done with.

The room they were in was 10 feet by 10 feet. The walls painted white. The only way out being the same way in, a single reinforced door in the centre of the wall to his right, the assets left. A single camera hung on the wall over the doorway, looking down at them, feeding his colleague in another room the situation.

He looks up from the thin file resting on the tabletop before him. It couldn’t really qualify as thin to be honest, as it had only one piece of paper within. A short list of names with the asset’s recently acquired nickname written below the others with a pen.

His three working eyes focusing on the β€˜asset’ seated across from him. The focus of his dead eye wandering aimlessly around the room. It naturally attracted the attention of everyone new he met, but not this youngling. Curious.

With a deep breath, using his mouth, he taps the paper in the open file with one finger to get her attention.

β€œThis debrief is being conducted at the Sigma-Bane operations safe-house.”

He explains to no one in particular. Getting it all recorded down in the system for administration purposes. The recorder that was fixed to the side of the table continued to run silently.

β€œSo See-m-ba. Am I pronouncing that right? You didn’t correct me earlier when I was started out so I’m gonna assume it’s right?”

β€œNope, you got it wrong. It’s Sim-Ba. Not Seam-Ba. I was told it was respectful to never interrupt someone, even when whatever they are saying is wrong. Cylinder question for Sidemount and maybe Twinset divers

Hey all,

Currently I have a single HP100, and a pair of AL63 cylinders. I am looking get into side mount this year. I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of LP72 cylinders (2 cylinders for $100 each) from one of my instructors. I was thinking this could be to have them as dedicated Sidemount cylinders. I am using my HP100 for boat diving or beach diving deeper that 50ft and Ill use the AL63s when I am beach diving in less that 50ft or doing 2x night dives.

I was talking with the instructor this past weekend and he mentioned that training standards will allow a student to be certified with anything less than 50cf cylinders (apparently risk mitigation with low air on 40s) and that's when he mentioned the pair of LP72s. I was considering getting the 40s for sidemount (and to double as a bailout bottle for back mounted rec deep diving).

I would also eventually like to get into Side Mount Tec for extended underwater not necessary to get deeper (I also have dreams of diving the shipwrecks in the great lakes of the US so maybe deeper tec diving in the far off future).

Would adding the set of LP72s to my garage be of any benefit? If not what size should I look at?

The Shanty of a Bad Company, Chapter 1

β€œNo time to die, girls… we’re almost… there!”

The soaked girl shouted while swimming out of the freezing waves. Oil, blood and seaweed were sticking all across her hair, skin and uniform as her legs did all they could to leave the water, both arms too busy pushing those 3 wounded destroyers along what’s left of their rigging.

β€œCome on girls… just, a little… more…”

She cried once more after the long swim, hope reestablished upon feeling the warmth of the morning’s sand, shoving her ankles deeply on the hard and wet sand before pushing, the minimal movement from the 3 being enough to compensate for their rigging’s weight.

Taking longer than she imagined, with many remaining parts of rigging like torpedoes, cannons and backpack falling across the sand, they managed to get several meters away from the sea foam’s trail, the girl ceasing her movements and weakening her grip as her body focused for her own breath. She blinked her blue-ringed grey eyes several times upon noticing the brightness of the sunshine, raising her head to the trio’s most conscious, and asking in the midst of her breathes:

β€œWhat is… your name?”

β€œJa… ve… lin.”

The destroyer answered while struggling to keep her eyes opened, the deep and hopeful look that pierced the girl’s soul being enough to get the needed strength, shoving both hands’ fingers on sand, and dragging the 3 further into land, an Indy Ploy being made to transport them in a more efficient way into a medic… or a mechanic… disguising her fear with a optimistic smile, and answering without losing pace:

β€œYou’re gonna be alright… Javelin… I’ll take care… of you… all… of you.”

Chapter 1: Be prepared, there’s no time to die

β€œThe world has never changed.”

The woman sighed while looking at the monitors that surrounded her desk, aerial footage of radically distinct seas being reflected on her red eyes, which combined with the red rotten apple that she spat and tossed on the closest trash can. A snowy island full of frozen manjuus, an ocean barely showing the tip of a naval base’s radar station, a floating mass of ashes… none had a single thing in common, besides being in timelines of rogue sirens.”

β€œThere always was someone trying to be the biggest fish, putting itself and company above all others before being cut down by the very stars which it was trying to reach.”

With Hammerstein looming in the distance, here is a quick first timers guide to Game Changer Wrestling.

January 23rd is gonna be a pivotal show for GCW. They are running one of the most iconic venues in pro wrestling and are bringing the largest live audience to the venue, with a little over 2,000 people attending and it'll be the largest crowd they've ever had.

The company is red hot right now and has been getting a lot of buzz since around June of 2021 when Matt Cardona showed up on the scene and challenged Nick Gage for the title. Since then, they've been having strong shows, kicking open the forbidden door, bringing in some top caliber names, and are firing on all cylinders. With two shows left before The Wrld On GCW, here is a quick guide to the company. I won't go into a massive dive of its history or whatever, just wanna cover what's going on now as that's what's most important.

GCW often gets mislabeled as entirely a death match company, which couldn't be further from truth. While they do still lean into it, as it's a big part of their identity. They just had an absolutely brutal death match to cap off their last show. But, that's not all they do.

The company has all styles of wrestling represented, they book Deathmatch guys, pure wrestlers, flippy guys, brawlers, and more. Plus, rhe company has been instrumental in helping get a number of talent more eyes on them. Blake Christian, Alex Zayne, MJF, Joey Janela, Jungle Boy, Marko Stunt, and others have wrestled for them and it helped boost their status within the wrestling world.

Right now, they've wrapped up pretty much all the storylines, so there isn't much in the way of big feuds heading into Hammerstein. Although they look to be building up two big things.

Saturday night, Jeff Jarrett of all people showed up and crashed the state of the Effy address and smashed Effy with a guitar. We have yet to hear from either party, but I imagine that Double J vs Effy might be one of the big matches on that night.

Also, on the same show, Homicide' outlasted 19 competitors in the Do or Die Rumble, last eliminating Atticus Cogar, which guarantees him a world title shot against reigning champion Jon Moxley. New York is Homicide's town, he has trained a number of people from there and has helped the New York indies in a big way over 20 years. He's looking to make one more moment on the biggest GCW show of all time.

In regards to the talent, their roster is pretty loaded and GCW is always on the lookout for the unknown and rising indie stars to give that spotlight to. The top names right now ar

In the name of being more open and honest, I think it would be helpful for the community as a whole to discuss events big or small to identify reasons down the line that might have been a precursor to a more critical failure.

I'm going to open the conversation by discussing some of the incidents I've been involved in, what I've learned and whether I have changed my operating procedures. For your reference, I was an open water instructor and tech guide. I now mainly stick to personal diving with a 60m normoxic ticket and full cave certification. I'm currently around 1200 dives, 80 overhead cave dives and around 200 decompression dives.

  1. Student left with no gas supply:

Another instructor and I were teaching two courses in a loosely knit group for UK HSE requirements. It was a cold winter day with brittle water temperatures. We briefed both groups together regarding conditions and safety procedures explaining freeflows are a risk and that us, the instructors would manage any incidents by putting them on our primaries then switching off their gas supply to wait for the first stage to warm up. The other instructor and I were on typical DIR twinset equipment. Student A on a recreational octo/primary setup and Student B with an inflator backup and primary reg on a short hose. I had Student C in my group on a DIR single cylinder setup.

At 22m I was around 20m distance from the other group. I noticed the other instructor turn his back to go and lay some line. Almost immediately on turning Student A had a freeflow. I turn to my student and signal for him to stay close and follow. During this short period, Student A had taken Student B's inflator backup and Student B was turning off his gas supply. I swim hell bent for leather - the AIR2 inflator reg was pulled out of Student A's mouth as his gas supply was switched off.

He began immediately swimming for the surface visibly holding his breath. I was already on my backup swimming quickly. I jammed my primary in his mouth whilst purging. I dumped gas and brought him down then calmed him down. I then checked everyone else was ok. The other instructor turned around at that point to see the silt and chaos. I signalled OK and aborted the dive. We swam the student out on the other instructors long hose, being preferential to leave at the exit point

Does the volume of gas in a scuba cylinder change over the course of a dive?

I took a sidemount course over the last two weekends.

It's mass. (Pretty much. You'd also need to factor in temperature).

Is my understanding correct? Or, is it common to refer to pressure times container volume as the volume of the gas?
