The Diocletian's Palace is an ancient palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century CE, which today forms about half the old town of Split, Croatia. It is the largest and best-preserved example of Roman palatial architecture [1000x670]

If a Roman soldier from the 2nd century were to awake one morning and suddenly find himself serving during the reign of Diocletian or Constantine, what major differences would he immediately notice?Which aspects of his military service would change the most?
Beyond differences in equipment, would he still recognize the basic practices, tactics, and structure of the army? Or would it mostly all seem new to him?
From his perspective, would the overall training and discipline of the army appeared to have changed much, and if so, to what extent?

Diocletianβs resignatiion
So recently I learned the emperor Diocletian abdicated (resigned). Sounds like this is the first time in imperial history an emperor just gave up the purple. Was there a particular reason he did that?

Why did Diocletian and his successors establish an early kind of "serfdom" in the Late Roman Empire and practically make social mobility impossible? Were they obliged to do so in order to maintain the state working?
