UPDATE: Another news site, Slobodna Dalmacija, interviewed a few of the family members of the deceased girls. What they said should put to rest the theories that the person or people doing this are stealing the frames (and not the photos) to sell them. "We were shocked because one of the four photos (on the family tomb, presumably) was missing, which was of a younger female deceased person from our family. You could see traces on the stone where somebody used a screw driver to steal her photo. We've looked around the grave in case the photo was discarded, but we couldn't find it anywhere. We called the photoceramist (the person who makes the gravestone photos) to have the photo made again and when we told him what happened, he relayed to us that recently he had been contacted by multiple families who had the same thing happened to them. He told us that all of the photos stolen were of young deceased women." - said one woman whose family member's photo was stolen.

Another man had the photo of his daughter stolen twice from her grave. He says he still can't come to his senses because of it.
"This just opened up my wounds and it hurts even more than at the beginning", he said. "I've been trying to understand why somebody would steal her photo. Two and a half months ago, the photo of her which was situated on the engraved book disappeared (there were two photos of his daughter on her grave, one was on the tombstone and the other on the engraved book, which is also a custom here). My wife and I thought that maybe it fell down somehow and we looked around the grave, but couldn't find it. Afterwards, a neighbor told us that a photo of a young woman disappeared from his family grave as well and that he had reported it to the cemetery. Anyone driving to Split from Zagreb for the Croatia/Russia? Me and my roommate need a ride. We are american-Croatian students. We had a blabla car cancel on us because I have a doctor appointment at 8:30 for my arm injury but it is just a quick check-up. If anyone plans on leaving Zagreb around 9:30/10. Please let us know! There are no more BlaBla Cars left!
To add some more context: Our student rugby club is going for a week to Zadar&Split however some of us do not want to travel by plane. We are trying to find alternatives, one of them interrail. Does anyone have experience or tips for us on interrailing through Croatia? We are starting in the Netherlands.
Last week I posted that we'd settled on Bansko, Bulgaria, as our destination for the next three months.
Folks had a lot of thought on that decision!
We weren't put off by the talk of air pollution or high heating bills. Those are concerns, of course, but nothing we weren't willing to put up with for what we'd get in exchange.
But the exploding Covid rates in Bulgaria? That put us right off.
I'm not sure why I dropped the ball this time. In our travels throughout Eastern Europe this year, I've done my due diligence and been very comfortable with our choices, either because things seemed well in hand with mask usage being high and/or vaccination/infections rates decent.
But I guess I got too comfortable in thinking things were pretty good everywhere, which was very dumb on my part because things in Bulgaria are definitely not all right.
So thanks again to everyone who (nicely) suggested we rethink our decision. It's one of the great things about the DN community.
