In 2017 there were 325 million people and 370 million firearms. There were 17,284 murders and 810,825 assaults.
In 27 years the population increased by 77 million, the number of firearms increased by 170 million. The number of murders decreased by 6,156 and the number of assaults decreased by 244,035.

While there’s no accurate way to determine the number of active crimes stopped by guns yearly it’s estimated to be somewhere between 67,000 and 2.5 million. The first number being reported by a gun control advocacy group and the second number being reported by the NRA. The actual number is somewhere in the middle. It’s often touted that the US has a high murder rate compared to other devolved nations and that is true by a lot. However our rates of assault are lower than many developed nations. The US had an assault rate of 237 per 100,000 people in 2015. Most guns used to commit crime are possessed illegally. Most Criminals are not walking into gun stores and buying firearms. More than 25 percent had received it from a family member or friend, or as a gift.
