Hello! We have two dogs - a 3.5 year old Japanese Spitz and a 7 month old German Spitz - and they got some yellow eye discharge about a month ago. Weβve tried two kinds of eye ointment/drops at the recommendation of a vet but neither has resolved the problem. Weβre also not sure what is causing it, so Iβve included a timeline to try and root out the cause.
Some maybe relevant notes:
Timeline:
Sadly found a dead White-throated sparrow in my garden hidden under a plant. One of his eyelids is scaly looking (see here). Is this avian conjunctivitis or another contagious disease I should be concerned about?
I believe my 3yo cat has stomatitis. He has lesions in the back of his throat, will not eat dry food or soft food. He has lost a bunch of weight due to this.
I found him when he was less than a month old, but even then he always had his third eyelid showing(greenish-yellow, red torwards the edge), I did not think much of it as I have no experience with it and the vet said nothing about it when he was neutered at ~3 months old.
The vet did not specifically mention stomatitis or conjunctivitis, just coming to conclusion by symptoms.
On my most recent vet visit, the vet said it was likely FelV and the best bet would be to put him down, instead of tooth extraction and treatment.
No bloodwork or testing has been done.
What do you think my best options here are? Is it time to put him down, or try treatment?

I have a 4 month and a half old golden retriever puppy. One month ago he contracted conjunctivitis and the veterinary precribed eye drops. We couldn't put any drop into his eyes, it was a fight. So we opted for eye cream but even in this case we couldn't put a full dose into the eye. Anyway the symptoms seemed to ease a bit bit since today his eyes are red again with this white greenish secretion, so tomorrow back to the veterinary. My question is: if we cannot put any medicines into his eyes cause he is non cooperative, will he recover by himself or at the end will he loose his eyes? Unfortunately I cannot fight with the dog, I underwent emergency eye surgery for retina detachment in February so I am in dire straits. Any help or tip would be appreciated.
I'm just wondering if anyone had conjunctivitis and when did it appear (early in symptoms, late, etc.) and how red were your eyes? Thanks
On Wednesday I took my cat Einstein to the vet in an emergency because I came home on my lunch and his eye was swollen completely shut. The vet said it was mild bacterial conjunctivitis, probably picked up when he was neutered a few weeks ago and his immune system was suppressed from stress. He was prescribed doxycycline and neopolydex. Its now Saturday and Einsteinβs eye is still swollen shut, and it looks like his oral medication (doxycycline) will run out soon. Should his eye be open now? Should I get more doxycycline? When should I expect to see improvement?
my 2 year old cat has had conjunctivitis for a while now, itβs very bad, her eye is always squinted, often red, and has yellow/green discharge and sometimes the eye is discolored. Weβve taken her to the vet for it and they gave us eye drops but it didnβt fix the problem. Iβm totally fine with taking her back to the vet but it is stressful for her and expensive, so are there any treatments we can try that we can order online or something? i will provide photos

I know I'm not supposed to post emergency stuff here but I'm really in need of some help and I'm hoping somebody will answer before morning. Yesterday Strudel (my lionhead) out of nowhere had what I thought was pink eye. Her eye was a little red, clearly irritated, and there was some discharge coming out. My usual vet is now closed on the weekends (go figure) so I drove 2 hours to my closest emergency vet that would accept rabbits. It was hell, we waited 7 hours, and they weren't really sure what she had, so they sent me home with Neomycin and Polymyxin gel to give to her every 8 hours, saying it could be conjunctivitis or an eye injury, and might have something to do with an ear infection. I've since given her 2 doses, and as I was wrangling her to give her 3rd dose, her eye started bleeding from the tearduct like crazy. Panicked, I called the emergency vet again and asked if I should continue to give her the eye gel or stop. They told me to drive her there immediately and that they couldn't legally tell me if I should or shouldn't continue the eye gel without seeing her (despite the fact that she was there yesterday for 7 hours and they couldn't figure out whether she had conjunctivitis or an eye injury) and I can't drive another 2 hours to the vet at night) strudel hates car rides, and was extremely stressed about the first ride, and I didn't want to put her through that again. My regular vet opens at 7 and I assume they'll get me in asap once I call cause they're great, but I'm really unsure about what to do in the meantime. I've been trying to get close enough to her eye to get the blood off and gently clean it, but she won't let me anywhere even remotely close to it and I don't think she'd let me give her the eye gel even if I could. I can post pictures if anyone wants them but they're rather graphic so I didn't want to put them in the post automatically. Any advice would be extremely appreciated, I'm most likely going to be up all night keeping an eye on her.
My eyes have been red since I was around 10 years old. It all started when I started all of a sudden. I've been on eye steroids periodically for over 7 years now and it doesn't seem to get better at all. My eyes generally get more red and scratchy towards the night. I recently was on a 5 week course on loteprednol and my eye redness came back just after 4 days. I'm really getting frustrated now and is worried this will never be uncurable.
Since I've visited eye surgeons for a long time now, i thought of visiting an allergist. Will an allergist help me?
Hi! Just want to ask if anyone has experience of conjunctivitis in hamsters. Itβs been quite cold here for a few days and my hamster has been pretty inactive, which is normal behaviour. However, today we noticed that she hadnβt eaten the fresh vegetables we put in her bowl, which is very much not her behaviour! So we coaxed her out of her house and noticed her eyes were crusty and almost closed (left one more so). Iβve bathed her eyes in sterile, warm water with a cotton pad a couple of times this evening (to remove the crust first and then again because they had started to weep white liquid). Weβve since noticed the right side of her face is a little swollen. It all seems to suggest conjunctivitis but Iβm pretty much just going off human symptoms Iβve had before! Anyone got any ideas? And is it worth a visit to the vets?
I posted this in the birding reddit but wanted to share it here too because I'm desperate for some help :)
I saw a female cardinal yesterday with a damaged eye. Her other eye seemed fine, and she was acting normal. I didn't get a good look but it seemed swollen shut and black, somewhat enlarged. It could be an injury, of course, but to be cautious I'm considering it conjunctivitis. (Any way to tell the difference?)
I've taken down my feeders and will disinfect them (I typically clean them, but only with water/soap, so I'll try a bleach and/or vinegar solution), clean the areas under them etc. But what should I do moving forward? I've seen some resources that recommend leaving feeders down for a week if you see multiple infected birds, but it's just been the one so far, so I'm not sure what to do. I'm keeping an eye out for her and other infected birds today, so far I've seen none which is a good step.
Also, is it possible for a cardinal to have conjunctivitis but only in one eye? Do birds typically heal from this or is it fatal? :(
The other day I noticed some wetness around my bunnies eye, I managed to get a vet appointment 30 mins after noticing this and was told she had conjunctivitis however Iβd caught it super early (phew!) I was given some eye drops to give to her once every 12 hours. Iβm just wanting to know whether I should clean around her eye where her drops sometimes drip out a little or whether I should leave it to go naturally? Any advice would be really appreciated
We have been feeding birds over the last few years & we observe the exact same cycle every time. We put up feeders, enjoy for a few weeks, observe finches with conjunctivitis, stop feeding & wait. We have never been able to feed more than a few weeks without our finches showing eye problems. I am DILIGENT in my cleaning. I clean them every other day. I use soap & water, then do a diluted bleach soak, rinse, and dry overnight. I have an entire cleaning tub setup just for my bird feeders. We have observed conjunctivitis in House Finches, American Goldfinches, and Purple Finches. It is heart-wrenching to see them so sick. We have had several that go completely blind & just cower in the bushes. Our local rescue wonβt take them. We feel so hopeless & are contemplating whether we should feed at all.
Recently, I started wondering how the occurrence of conjunctivitis could be so high. I have found data showing conjunctivitis can be rampant in poultry farms. I live in rural NW GA and there are many chicken houses close by. Is there any evidence to support poultry conjunctivitis spreading to finches? Or is it just that rampant in wild populations? Should we continue to feed despite how often we are seeing eye disease? I did just signup for Cornellβs Feeder Watch to begin reporting the prevalence, however we are currently in a non-feeding time :(
Thanks in advance for any input!
Iβve been on it for a couple years now, I started to get the eye side effects pretty severely a few months ago. Got prescribed steroid eye drops, problem went away after a few weeks. Was instructed to use a lid scrub in the morning and over the counter artificial tear eye drops throughout the day and to taper off the drops. I was told it was uncommon for the symptoms to re occur once theyβre initially cleared up but mine have re-surfaced. Wondering if anybody was given an alternate treatment by a derm or ophthalmologist that has worked and not come with a relapse of symptoms. Any insight is appreciated!
