Many, many years ago, in the time between graduating High School and starting College, I watched and recorded an episode of the ABC Saturday morning educational cartoon O.G. Readmore (I was a fan of Don Bluth Studio's style of animation, and had plans to become an animator myself). In It, O.G. enters the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and becomes Jack, and he is initially confused about where and who he is. The first person he encounters refers to him as Jack only once, yet his response was "Jack? Why do you keep calling me Jack?" I remember the line quite vividly, as it was at such a right-angle to the actual events in the scene, and it seemed to be a complete brain-fart on the part of the writers. Afterwards, when watching the VHS tape of the episode, the line altered to "Jack? Why did you call me Jack?"
My theory is that each consciousness is observing a version of the universe where they are that universe's only constant. They are an extruding branch off of the fractal tree of space-time, one which takes with it an imperfect copy of everything contained in the main trunk up until the point they manifested; off of this new branch spiral variants which extrapolate every possible choice you might make at every possible moment. The "you" which you experience at present is the sum of every variant of you which has survived up until this point; every time you perish in your main time line the fractal spirals you onto a variant off of your main branch, enabling you to survive past that moment.
