A list of puns related to "Bonk's Adventure"
I owned a TurboGrafx 16. I bought it on my birthday, the day after it released in 1989. I enjoyed it immensely but a year later I had traded it in for a Sega Genesis and I don't feel I made the wrong move. The TurboGrafx16 Mini is my window back to what I missed on that system after I traded it in.
The first game I played on the mini was Splatterhouse but when one thinks of the TurboGrafx 16, they probably initially think of Bonk. Bonk, was the TG16's answer to Nintendo's Mario and well, let's just say the little cave boy didn't have the pull.
Despite being pretty much the face of the console, I never owned Bonk's Adventure and always thought it looked a bit overly silly. This probably stems from the insanely large models they used to make his character. And to be fair Bonk and everything else in Bonk's adventure is ridiculous looking. Today though, this doesn't bother me. I actually like the look of the game.
For whatever reason, the localized version of Bonk's Adventure was not included on the TG16 mini but one of the cool features the system has is that you can switch to an included library of PC Engine games (the European and Japanese version of the TG16). So, hence this write-ups title as being PC Genjin, the Japanese version of Bonk's Adventure.

I don't speak Japanese but fortunately there is very little story and thankfully side scrolling platformers are a language of their own and despite not really knowing why Bonk was setting out on this adventure, I knew what I needed to do (get to the end of the level). It's pretty standard fair, except in stead of jumping on enemies, Bonk uses his over-sized head as weapon.
Remember I said that I liked the look of the game? I do. In screenshots. In actual practice, the large character sprites shrink your field of view to be smaller than what one would expect from a sidescrolling platformer. As such there are a lot of more blind jumps than I feel comfortable with. I can imagine that if I had this when I was 11, I would have played the hell out of it and mastered it, like I did with my limited collection of games at the time. But I'm 42 now, I don't have the patience for this shit and save states became my friend.
Also my friend was the turbo button that came with the controller. This is exactly how the controller worked 30 years ago but until a friend reminded me of

NES Games I'm missing from list linked above
In the early 90's I saw a Toys R Us commercial with various costumed characters calling each other on the phone to talk about how great Toys R Us is. One of the costumed characters was Bonk from the TurboGrafx-16 game Bonk's Adventure. It was a really good costume and he was shown answering the phone in his cave. I do not remember who the other costumed characters were in the commercial, but they all represented different toys.
There are Toys R Us commercials on YouTube that feature costumed characters, but I have yet to find the one with Bonk. It is possible that the Bonk commercial could have been for another store, but I highly doubt it. This is why I am posting this here instead of "Tip of My Tongue." I am positive it was Toys R Us.
If anyone has any memory of this spot, or knows if a video of it has been uploaded, please let me know.
Thanks!
I bought Bonks cartridge for a person to make a big trade but, he decided to trade for another game instead (for Panic restaurant for those curious). Iβll mostly likely have to wait for his trade again but, Iβm open to see what everyone else has to offer. Iβm not looking for any specific titles so I can just take at your list and pick and choose if the value is there.
Thanks for looking!
