Why were the books closed ?

For fear of informants, to keep a low profile, financial reasons ?

I've read that J. Edgar Hoover denied the existence of the mafia in America until the Apalachin Meeting made it impossible to do so. What was the reasoning behind this? Did he not believe American mafia to be a major problem, was he unaware, or did he just not want to publicly admit the issue?

What Happened to the Mafia in 1957?

Here's a timeline:

March 12- Frank Costello is released from prison on bail. He served 3 1/2 years in prison of a 5 year sentence.

April 16- Johnny Torrio dies of a heart attack. He had mediated a peace between Vito Genovese and Frank Costello and was well respected by everyone.

May 2- Frank Costello is shot outside his appartement building, but survives. The unsuccessful hit team was Dominick Alongi, Dominic Di Quatro Jr., Pasquale Eboli, Thomas Eboli, Vincent Gigante, and Vincent Mauro. All of them were in the Greenwich Village crew led by Anthony Strollo.

May 9- Costello family underboss, Vito Genovese, calls 6 captains to a meeting: Anthony Strollo, Mike Miranda, Mike Coppola, Vincent Alo, Anthony Carfano and Jerry Catena. Carfano, a Costello loyalist living in Florida, refuses to show up. Vito is made boss. Catena, head of New Jersey, becomes underboss. Mike Miranda becomes consigliere replacing Alexander β€œSandino” Pandolfo who was a member of Vito’s old crew.

Early May- Albert Anastasia, boss of the Anastasia Family, goes into hiding at the Warwick Hotel under the name of Larry Knohl. Anastasia is a close ally of Frank Costello.

June 1- Albert Anastasia, his Florida Capo Joseph Silesi and soldiers Tommy Altamura and Joseph Florino meet with Anthony Carfano down in Florida.

June 13- Joseph Franco dies. He’s a Capo who’s aligned with Anastasia. He has a brother, Cosmo, who’s a member of the Joseph Riccobono crew which is a part of the Joseph Biondo faction.

June 18- Frank Scalice, the underboss of the Anastasia family, is killed. He’s shot at a fruit shop by the Vincent Squillante crew, part of Anastasia’s faction.

June 23- Frank Scalice is buried. At the funeral, his brother Joseph swears revenge. Antonio Conte is made underboss of the Anastasia family. Joseph Biondo steps down and replaced as consigliere by Carlo Gambino. Both Conte and Gambino were Captains in the Frank Scalice faction.

September 7- Joseph Scalice is killed. He’s rumored to have been hacked to death by the Vincent Squillante crew.

September ?- The commission is supposed to meet at Richie Boiardo’s farm but Anastasia refuses to go there. They hold the meeting in the basement of a restaurant and Anastasia’s described as fearful.

October 24- Albert Anastasia, still laying low, meets with Santo Trafficante, boss of the Tampa Family and Anthony Carfano at the Warwick Hotel. Trafficante’s godfather is Domenico Arcu

How I would have written The Godfather Part III

I shared some of my ideas for rewriting The Godfather Part III in r/fixingmovies about a year ago, and I was curious to hear what the people in this subreddit thought about them now that I’ve fleshed my ideas out some more.

To begin with, this rendition of Part III will emulate Part II and feature two parallel narratives that pick up where Vito and Michael’s storylines in Part II left off.

The first one will be set in 1932-1933 and document the rise of the Corleone family during the ending days of Prohibition along with the events of the Olive Oil War as written in the original novel. That and it will elaborate on the origins of characters like Sonny, Frank Pentangeli, Luca Brasi, and Hyman Roth; the former of which ascends the family hierarchy by helping his father cleanse the streets of the Black Hand organization led by Salvatore Maranzalla and his two lieutenants: Joe Pisani and Willie Bufalino (all three of whom are mentioned in the original script for Part II). In this rendition, the character of Maranzalla will fill the role that Salvatore Maranzano does in the original novel; thus creating a link between Vito’s storylines in Parts II and III - specifically Vito’s conflict with Fanucci, who was revealed in Part II to have been one of Maranzalla’s underlings.

While I haven’t figured out the logistics, the following plot points will be adapted directly from the original novel and depicted in the storyline featuring Vito:

  • Brasi’s brutal slaying of the Chicago Outfit gunmen sent to kill Vito at Maranzalla’s behest.
  • Maranzalla’s restaurant assassination at the hands of Tessio and four other gunmen. (As a nod to the historical killing of Salvatore Maranzano - from whom Maranzano/Maranzalla's name is derived - at the hands of Jewish hitmen Bugsy Siegel, Red Levine, and Bo Weinberg, the roles of the four gunmen that aid Tessio in killing Maranzalla will be filled by Hyman Roth, his brother Sam, Moe Greene, and Johnny Ola.)
  • Sonny's participation in an armed robbery, and his subsequent induction into the family.
  • Vito's near-death experience at the hands of the Irish Gang.
  • Brasi's slaying of the Irish Gang members as well as a mob boss that attempted to intervene and protect the independents.

The second narrative will be set during the 1960s and explore the consequences of A) Michael orderi

What mafia guys outside of NY between 1930-Now would you consider "Commission" worthy?

I'm not sure how to best word the question so I'll use Johnny Papalia as an example. Crime Expert Jerry Langton once said "It’s hard for people to understand now just how powerful Johnny Pops was. He was basically the only Canadian Mafia figure who could sit at the table with the top guys in New York."

So my question is...Hypothetically...What mafia guys American or Canadian (outside the NY 5 families) had the power/reputation worthy of filling a HYPOTHETICAL potential 6th commission seat?

Papalia

Rizzuto

Santo Traficante

Carlos Marcello

Patriarca

Giancana

What exactly does 'House of Hilton' say about Big Kathy? Part 3 - Marriages and Mafiosos

Since I have really enjoyed writing these posts, I wanted to separate my personal account from my bravo postings. All future postings will be on this account because I'd like to continue exploring other bravo situations and topics. Thanks for your patience and understanding! I wanted to get a post out in case anyone is having a lame Monday! I will be reposting parts 1 and 2 with this account, however I will be adding more links/photos into them when I do!

We return to Big Kathy and Ken's relationship. It's strained and in a terrible place. It's April of 1968, and the couple decided to go out of town to try and fix their relationship. This is said to be the first time the two were intimate in months. BK winds up pregnant and a family member says BK "was livid."

Newly pregnant, BK throws herself into her children's careers, putting the focus on Kim rather instead of Little Kathy. BK proceeds to give birth to Kyle. Kyle is described as looking "more like her father than her mother, with a thin, long face and dark hair."Β It is said that Ken was the one to take care of the girls as babies. He would wake up for the 3am feedings. BK was said to not cook very much, but loved cleaning and vacuuming. Ken would later claim "Kathy did nothing." His wife after Kathy, Sylvia, says "I don't think she really cared about the kids--except for the money they made."

At this time Kathy was still running all over with Kim when they came across the "Nanny and the Professor," a show on Fox(more details about this in Kim's writeup!). When BK heard about the casting call, she showed up immediately to try to be first in line with Kim. A casting director was quoted stating "it was like a stage mothers from hell convention. They were elbowing each other out of the way. Hair pulling and eye scratching were not out of the question." He describes the sea of Little blond girls with blue eyes all auditioning. He then recalls "Kim Richards and that bitch on wheels mother of hers came in....and whatever magic we were looking for, Kim Richards had it. Plus I remember the mother had some good connections in town."

Kim was said to be well trained by BK. BK spent time teaching Kim to learn her lines. BK said "to keep it natural, I would just play a game, skipping words, which she'd fill in. I'd do that until she memorized it." It's believed that this claim of Kathy's was considered an exaggeratio

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
