American Gangster (film) Puns

Politically active, societally engaged, Denzel and Russell are firing all cylinders.

I thought this was a fantastic crime thriller. I've seen a lot of people criticising that the kingpin antagonist Frank Lucas isn't wholly demonised by the film, but I thought that was the entire point. Taking notes from Heat, there isn't really a bad guy. Just two people struggling against the system in their own way who just happen to be on opposite sides of it. Demonising Lucas would mean demonising a hero of the working class and far too simplistic a way to approach the story. The entire film is about the broken system and the grim realities of late state capitalism. I think turning it into a simple cops and robbers dynamic would undermine the overall critique of American structures and leadership.

As always the technical elements are pitch perfect. Ridley Scott is an absolute master of production values. The offices and streets are so rich and vibrant, simultaneously feeling realistic and cinematic. Every action scene plays like an intricate piece of clockwork with the editing and action beats working in tandem. There's just such an assured hand at the wheel. I wouldn't call it one of Ridley's all time best but I think it's one of his most underrated.

I saw scenes from this film in some YouTube video, but not only do I not know what the film is called, I also don't remember which video I saw it in. I have no idea what the film might be called or when it was made, but the hagakure quotes are what makes it stick out in my memory so much.

I just started it yesterday and am really enjoying it so far. The costumes and set design, the time period, the acting and story are all top notch. Forest Whitaker, Nigel Thatch as Malcolm X, Vincent D'Onofrio, Giancarlo Esposito, etc. It's got an excellent cast.

What do you guys think? I'm guessing much like Epix other shows like Pennyworth, they just don't have a huge viewer base compared to some of the competitors so it just doesn't get the same attention but it's just as good as anything on any other network or service.
