Adolfo Celi Puns

Overview

After delivering Goldfinger to the ravenous masses, the producers and filmmakers had no choice but to go even bigger for the next installment. While it doesn't quite measure up to its immediate predecessor, Thunderball is still very nearly peak Bond, and Connery's first four films just might be the most consistently excellent run of consecutive installments in the entire series.

Point-By-Point

• The pre-titles sequence, while not quite as epic as Goldfinger's, is still an exciting shot of adrenaline to welcome the audience back into the world of James Bond. There's a vicious fight with a SPECTRE operative, then a completely unexpected (and, in 1965, likely mind-blowing) escape by jetpack. Following all this, the sensational Aston Martin DB5 makes an encore appearance. The title theme is pure bombast, and is played over the first of many sequences of nude silhouettes by Maurice Binder.
• The scene at SPECTRE HQ is suitably sinister, and gives us our second look at Blofeld, still obscured as he was in From Russia With Love. His sudden electrocution of one of his operatives is a shocking (sorry) reminder of his ruthlessness. While all the other operatives are visibly unnerved by this abrupt execution, Largo's reaction is one of absolute indifference. A quick, almost bored glance at the man smoldering in the chair, then he goes back to examining his papers. He's all like, "Whatever, this isn't even my whole day."
• Unfortunately, Largo is a rather weak villain. He's sinister and cruel, yes, but he's extremely underdeveloped, without much in the way of a personality. He's largely a stock villain, if you will. Bad man with eyepatch. This is in no way the fault of actor Adolfo Celi, who does the best he can with what he's given.
• Bond aggressively planting a kiss on Patricia Fearing is rude and uncalled for, I'll grant you that. The seduction that occurs after she rescues him from the stretching machine is ultimately consensual, however. There's no question of Bond seriously blackmailing Patricia into bed. It's just a pretense.
• Fiona Volpe, like Professor Dent and Miss Taro in Dr. No, is an inspired addition to the story by the screenwriters. A cold-blooded and irredeemable femme fatale, and gorgeous to boot. The brief conversation between Largo and Fiona while the two are target shooting establishes that Fiona is no mere henchwoman of Largo's, but an equal in the SPECTRE hierarchy.
• Blofeld once again displays his intolerance

If you're new to F1 and want to learn a bit more about the history of the sport, I'm creating this thread to try and share some old grognard insights that will help flesh out the recent dramas that have created the current 2021 dynamic, as well as the biggest players in the sport's history.

Hopefully this will help with the symptoms of F1 withdrawal over the break.

As a starting note - whilst I like Drive to Survive as a means of advertising the sport, I do have issues with the fake narrative it creates and I'll elaborate more on the dangers of unchecked romanticism when discussing the film that brought DTS producer James Gay-Rees to F1's attention.

Season reviews

The best resource in my view is available on F1 TV (and possibly on YouTube), which are the official F1 Season Reviews. They cover all races with basically the highlights of each race, and some off track action (i.e. news of Hamilton's surprise move from McLaren to Mercedes in the 2012 season) and give you an idea how the seasons played out. If any of the individual races tickle your fancy, they should also be on F1 TV as classics (or I'm sure you can find them).

I'll start with some Turbo Hybrid era and then earlier reviews, because they give really good insight into the situation in 2021.

Turbo Hybrid era

2014 - This is the start of the Mercedes-dominated turbo hybrid era. Hamilton and Rosberg fight hard for the title all year, and the only times that a Silver Arrow doesn't win are when they've had issues and Red Bull's newly promoted Daniel Ricciardo is there to pick up the pieces. His team mate, Sebastian Vettel, has just come off a ridiculously dominant 2013 and this is really where the Ricciardo hype train starts. It's also where the biggest rivalry Lewis has seen starts in earnest - Max in 2021 is nothing next to the destructive force of Hamilton v Rosberg.

2016 - 2015 has some interesting moments, such as Vettel's first win in red and the McLaren-Honda partnership starting with a bang then whimper before they've turned a wheel in anger. But it's 2016 that saw the first ever Dutch winner, which is pretty wild when you consider there is a Belgian F1 winner in Jacky Ixcy and 2 winners from tiny little New Zealand (Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren). I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

This was a fun Bond adventure and both Adolfo Celi and Luciana Paluzzi can be included in any top ten list of Bond antagonists as their portrayals of SPECTRE agents Emilio Largo and Fiona Volpe provided some of the best moments in the film, and if Claudine Auger as Domino was a trifle forgettable as the film’s “Damsel in Distress” she certainly wasn’t hard on the eyes.

If Thunderball had been trimmed to a healthy 105 minutes we could have had a really great Bond film, sadly, its waterlogged elements sink its already somewhat bloated plot. Not to say this is a bad film, there isn’t really a Bond film I’d call outright bad, it’s just the fact that this one could have easily been so much better.

I'm surprised it hasn't decade.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
