In 1880s, a baboon worked as a signalman for 9 years on South African RailRoad. He was paid 20 cents a day and half a bottle of beer weekly and never made a mistake. He died in 1890 due to tuberculosis.

I have this rather lovely 1880s French mantel clock, which is running to time and chiming correctly. The only problem with it is the chiming is more of a very slow βdinkβ than a sonorous ding. Iβve tried loosening the bell a little, but it doesnβt alter the way the hammer rests on it. Any ideas?
W.E.B. DuBois asserted that around the 1880s-1890s, to get a βreal position in a universityβ every American had to go to Germanyβs universities to get their degree. Why and how did this tradition develop in the US university System?
Assuming that DuBois is correct of course, but why German universities? What was so special about them? What did he meant by 'real positions'? Obviously, the dean is one but what are the other 'real' positions. Also, what was the reputation of Harvard University at This time? There was a humorous anecdote by DuBois where he claimed that he couldnβt sit for a test because a University that he attended in Berlin βdidnβt recognize Harvard as being of the same rank.β All of This I gleaned from his recorded AutoBiography around the 12:20 and 16:30 mark.

I thought these were interesting - This weekend I found these old cookbooks at the family cottage that's been in my wife's family for at least six generations and the books are all 110+ years old. I guess someone really liked onions and my wife and I are not the first vegetarians in the family.
