Possible to sustain a fracture of the zygomatic bone during forceps birth?

Without going into too much detail: A relative of mine has recently given birth, and forceps had to be used in order to deliver the baby since the birth didn't progress after several hours of labor. The baby came out with bruises and swellings on his face, and you could see the outlines of the forceps on his face for several days. Doctors told her all of this was normal, and the swelling did decrease after some time. However, ever since they got home the baby went back and forth between being very drowsy and sleeping a lot on the one hand and irritability/ fussiness on the other. His parents got him examined by a pediatrician three weeks post partum, and an already healing fracture of the zygomatic bone (the cheekbone) has been diagnosed!

Obviously, they got asked very uncomfortable questions about whether they dropped him, whether an older sibling or babysitter has been alone with him and so on (none of this happened according to them). I know them very well and would say with one hundred percent certainty that none of them hit or otherwise abused the baby, so the fracture must have occured during birth, right? I have read about skull fractures being a possible consequence of forceps delivery, but nothing about a case like this. Is it even possible?

Some teeth hurt A LOT after weed. No idea why. Any ideas?

25M;Poland - have been to medical professionals before in this case, to no avail. I am quite desperate for ideas, as this is slowly getting unbearable - I have the time and the funds, but still can't get reasonable help.

Pretty much any time I smoke a joint, spliff, or any sort of weed, some of my teeth start to hurt (I know, I shouldn't smoke, but that doesn't solve the issue). This also happens while sober, usually in the evenings. This does not work as strongly with cigarettes, even when using cigarette filters for weed. This did not happen about 6 months ago at all. Suddenly started. This does not affect alcohol, but does affect my prescription pregabalin - the pain gets worse about an hour after a dose. It also affects psychedelics, making them impossible to use (sad, as they help me a lot) - the pain becomes too much, I literally feel as if I had broken a tooth or two, and they "move" as if they were broken. This goes mostly back to normal once sober, but I do sometimes feel them move much more than normal teeth. The pain makes me unable to talk or forces me to cover half of my mouth with my hand (or wear a mask) at times due to pain alone, sober or not.

Now, I've been to a dentist - 4 of them, in fact. I mentioned my smoking to all of them. All diagnosed it as hypersensitivity, gum inflammation (but why does it only affect 3 or 4 teeth then, and keeps getting worse even after scaling and sandblasting? Also, I call absolute bullshit on this, this is not what hypersensitivity feels like, feels like infected tooth), and/or occasional pain from my recent root canal tooth. A pantomogram has been done about half a year ago, when the symptoms didn't occur yet, confirming 8th and 9th teeth (none of which came up at that point or to this moment) and no additional issues at that point. CBCT was done about 2 months ago, also no mention of any issues from the dentists, apart from the ones mentioned in the paragraph below.

This is specific to a certain area - 5th and 6th upper-right teeth, that had a root canal done a few weeks ago, and upper-right 7th tooth that has known small spots of decay, supposedly small enough to not require treatment yet (checked with a dentist a week ago). Apart from that, the pain affects my temporal and mandible on that side of the face sometimes, causing headaches and swollen lymph nodes on the right side of the neck. Anything hot (or warm, like a pillow after a few seconds) on my right zygom

Likeness Portrait Sculpture - To measure or not to measure?

Hi everyone, I'm in a pickle and I'd greatly appreciate any input you may have.

I've been getting really frustrated with my attempts at getting a likeness, I've been practicing for a fairly long time and I still can't even get the overall head-shape right. (I can make decent looking heads, I just can't seem to match a likeness.) I've attempted using the spotlight but trying to trace an image has only made my sculptures worse (especially because I can't guess the focal length in photos).

Having watched Hossein Diba sculpt a likeness from a single image without taking any measurements has been an eye-opener in regards to just how reliable observational skills can get. In the other hand, traditional sculptors claim that measurement is a must if one desires to match a likeness.

I feel like I have to stick to one of these methods:

  1. No measurements, observational skills only
  2. Real-world data based measurements (average size of eyeball, average length of zygomatic bone etc.)
  3. Grid-based proportional measurements

I apologize if this is a silly question, I've never really dealt with any visual art skills before and it's been really frustrating trying really hard but getting nowhere.

TIFU by not turning on the bathroom light, causing my wife to break my face

Last night I woke up at around 3am and had to use the bathroom. The street lamps in the parking lot of our apartment building provide a decent amount of light through the window for me to be able to see, so I didn't bother turning on the bathroom light, or even closing the door all the way. I finished and flushed, and after I washed my hands I noticed that there was a big ol' hang nail on my thumb.

So I was standing in the middle of the bathroom with not so much light, carefully using a clipper to take care of it. I put the clippers down and I suddenly heard the door open, then all hell broke loose.

For background, my wife was raised in a family where for the first ten years of her life, her family basically lived in the middle of nowhere and were poor enough where they LITERALLY had to hunt for food because they couldn't afford groceries - so she learned pretty damn young how to be a deadly force of nature. When she was in high school, her house was burglarized while everyone was sleeping, and she was the one who woke up and witnessed people in the house going through their stuff, and of course that shit was traumatizing.

She's also 6'1" compared to my 5'8", and she works in an environment where she's constantly having to kick out shoplifters and just straight-up sketchy people all the time. So needless to say, she's a fairly on-edge, very strong, physically intimidating lady.

So when she comes in to use the bathroom and she's not wearing her glasses - meaning she basically can't see 6 feet in front of her - and sees some figure in the dark just standing in the bathroom, what do her instincts tell her to do?

Clap that son of a bitch.

She punched me so hard in the face that I almost passed out. It's actually kind of hazy but I just remember being in a ton of pain, then being in the passenger seat of my car, then at the hospital. Apparently part of my zygomatic bone on the right side of my face (underneath your eyes where your cheeks are) now has a fracture, and that whole side of my face just looks completely fucked.

It supposedly shouldn't require surgery thankfully, but man does it HURT. What was really fun was that they actually made us talk to a social worker because since I told the doctor "my wife punched me in the face" they obviously suspected domestic violence, and I kept having to say "it was an accident." Completely understand why they had one interview us but did they really have to do it while I was high as balls on painkillers

*Possible* BREAKTHROUGH In Mewing Results! Discussion Is Heavily Encouraged.

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. I am not claiming, nor have scientific evidence to suggest, that this theory works. Whatever you choose to do is on you only. This thread is written for pure discussion purposes only, in hopes to advance mewing as a practice & stimulate more research.

##Intro

Lips together.

Teeth together.

Whole tongue on the roof of the mouth.

This is how we are mewing 24/7.

We know that this (over time) pushes the maxilla up & forwards.

However, we have been overlooking one crucial aspect -- how we close the jaw (with which muscles specifically).

There are 2 theoretic patters to close the jaw.

Masseter & Temporal pattern.

###Main Theory

1. If we use a temporal pattern to hold posture -- the maxilla goes closer to the temporal bones & the mandible goes forward.

Making your chin & ramus more pronounced, while having your zygomatics.

We know this happens because the TMJ is located on the temporal bone.

That's why it's advised to keep the molars in light contact, but not clenching. *

2. If we use a masseter pattern to hold posture -- the maxilla goes further away from the temporal bones & the mandible goes down, increasing the gonial angle & face length.

This is also a result of clenching & overusing the masseters.

This can also cause an antegonial notch & hinder results.

###Conclusion:

If you close your jaw & keep it closed with a temporal pattern (see the image on how to do so & put your finger on the temporal muscles to feel them), you're going to see better results.

Would love the see what Dr. John Mew has to say about this, given that he's here frequently.

Edit: picture to achieve an easier mind-muscle connection.

Edit 2: If you are asking how to engage temporalis in practice, I visualize it as biting up and backward with the mandible, so that the premolars and molars lock against each other.

A complete list of all 'First Quotes' of all characters. Part 1/2 (A-L)

Hello everybody, I am happy that you decided to click this.

Obviously, as this covers all 14 main series books and the short-stories, this is going to contain s-words (Spo to the ilers, just don’t want AutoMod to mess with me again.)

What was the idea behind this? I recently watched a YouTube video in which two people guessed Harry Potter characters by the very first quote they had in the books. It was very interesting (and yes, I got them all right <.<). So, I thought about the characters in Skulduggery Pleasant and their first quotes. And before I noticed, I was halfway through Book 1 and thought to myself β€œHey, this is exactly the geeky kind of stuff I could do for the whole series.” And well, that’s what I did. The following list is a list of each character’s (I think it is very close to 100% coverage) very first (sometimes second, third, if the first quote was lame) voice line. As stated before, this includes all 14 main series books and the spinoffs (Not Grimoire, though). Use this list as you like, browse through it to find your favorite characters, use it as references, read them all, if you are eager to waste a lot of time (as did I, creating this list. Let’s not talk about the amount of hours this took, we’re talking about two digits). As this list expires the 40.000 character-limit for a Reddit-post, I will split it into two posts with about 30.000 characters each. For those interested in statistics: This document has about 10.000 words with about 60.000 character. The Word-Document is 31 pages long. There are 699 characters I found throughout the series, some sadly don’t have names, so I had to use other means to tell them apart. By the end of the second post, you’ll find a list of some characters who did not have any voice lines but are worth being mentioned.

If you have questions like β€œWho the fuck is Anguish?”, ask ahead. I SHOULD be able to refer to each of these characters, giving the book, chapter, and page they talk at first. For the sake of not blowing every proportion, I did not put in the references behind the quotes, though.

Now, without further babbling, please enjoy the list and as usual, I wish you a lovely Sunday and a great start into the week!

Β· A mage: β€œShudder, Sir. He’s gone.”

Β· Abyssinia: β€œAll this pain. All this death and destruction. It’s because of you, my dear. All because of you.”

Β· Adam Brate: β€œAwwwwwww.”, β€œYeah. Aw, man.”, β€œThat’s a Necromancer ceremonial mask. It’s worth more than my house.”

Giant Spock's skeleton in "Kayshon, His Eyes Uncovered" provides several potentially interesting details of Vulcan anatomy, and possibly a glimpse into their evolutionary history.

When studying vertebrate paleontology, the skeleton is one of the most important, and often the only, clue we have to the appearance of long-extinct animals. In Lower Decks: "Kayshon, His Eyes Uncovered", we were treated to the ghoulish sight of of Spock's skeleton ^1, ^2, courtesy of the remains of his giant clone from TAS: "The Infinite Vulcan." Any dinosaur fan knows that while there's only so much bones can tell you about the living animal, they can still tell quite a story. I am not an expert in anatomy and not a trained paleontologist, but it is my hope that analyzing the remains of Spock the Larger will provide further insight into the anatomical differences between humans and Vulcans. By way of comparison, here is an anatomical diagram of the human skeleton: ^3

Dentition

As near as I can tell, adult Vulcans appear to have 28 teeth to the human's 32, seven on each side ^4, ^5 on top and bottom. (It's possible that Spock could have had his wisdom teeth out, but presumably the clone would have undergone no such procedure, and no empty sockets are in evidence.) Looking closely at the teeth themselves, six molars, four incisors, and four bicuspids per side are in evidence. There is no sign of the canines a human has. This suggests that Vulcans evolved from a herbivorous answer. Could Vulcans' propensity for vegetarianism be a biological imperative rather than a cultural tendency?

#Skull

The proportions of the Vulcan skull as depicted in this image compared to the human skull in this image are fairly simpler. The skull, across the zygomatic along the upper corner of the orbit, is 101 pixels wide on the Vulcan as depicted in figure 1 and 75 pixels wide in the human as depicted in figure 3. The height of the skull, respectively, is 173 and 132 pixels. These equal a ratio of 1.71 for the Vulcan and 1.76 for the human. Sufficiently clear side and rear views are unfortunately not available for comparing the approximate circumference of the cranium, but it can be presumed that the Vulcan skull is similar in all dimensions to that of a human, and that their brain would likely be similar size (and thus, similar in proportion to their overall body mass) to that of a human. While brain-body ratio isn't a perfect estimator of intelligence this is certainly consistent with them being comp
