Warsaw Pact vs USSR, 1968

In 1968 the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia due to their reformist tendencies. The Socialist Republic of Romania was one of the few Communist nations to condemn this action. What if All Warsaw Pact members instead sided with Czechoslovakia and stood against the soviets?

NATO wouldn't intervene directly due to fear of Nuclear War, but they would probably help in someway.

I'm counting Yugoslavia part of the Warsaw Pact for the purposes of this post.

How did NATO plan to defend West German (and Dutch, Belgian, etc.) cities during the Cold War? How did the Warsaw Pact plan to capture them?

Many popular depictions of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe portray large armored formations maneuvering across open plains and rolling hills. But by the late Cold War, the region had become quite heavily urbanized.

Did the Warsaw Pact plan to bypass major cities to avoid getting bogged down and slowing their advance? Would it have been realistic for them to do so?

Did NATO plan to abandon large population centers and declare them β€œopen cities” to avoid possible WMD strikes there (assuming the war had not already become a large scale nuclear exchange)? Or did they envision bitter block-by-block fighting on the streets of Hamburg, Cologne, etc.?

How much urban fighting did each side expect, and how did their urban warfare doctrines compare?

Was "running fire" ever a thing?(Soviets, Warsaw Pact and China)

I am seeing videos where Soviet soldiers would run across the field supported by tanks and APCs, spraying and praying with AKs and machineguns. Was this ever a practical thing that was practiced or just propaganda? The Chinese first nuclear test video shows a similar thing where they would do mopping up with automatic weapons and AK mounted cavalry spraying and praying at gallop.

Was it even a real tactic or just mopping up action after a tactical nuclear strike or just for show?

[CONFLICT] WARSAW PACT INVADES WEST GERMANY

Insert some kind of innuendo about Deep Battle.

The week before:

India will periodically begin massing aircraft at the border, shutting off communications in the border provinces, and generating a lot of noise with vehicles and helicopters to simulate the beginning of an attack. Mandatory nighttime blackouts will begin.

5:00 AM, September 1, 2026:

Pakistani strategic targets will be hit with a wave of missiles. Targets include half the country's airbases (civilian airports and airbases in the South and West of the country are very conspicuously left untargeted to make it clear that India is not attempting a first strike), several large power plants, Pakistan's largest oil storage facility, and the country's main naval base.

Target Missiles
Army Aviation Base Multan Pralay x 4, KH-59ME x 8
Bahawalpur Airport Prahar x 8
PAF Base Rafiqui Prahar x 8, KH-59ME x 8
PAF BAse Mushaf Prithvi II x 16, KH-59ME x 12
PAF Base M.M. Alam Agni-I x 12, Shaurya x 12
PAF Base Nur Khan Pralay x 12, Shaurya x 12
PAF Base Minhas Agni-I x 12, Shaurya x 12
Skardu Airport Prithvi II x 12
Skardu Bridge Nirbhay x 10
Gilgit Bridge Nirbhay x 10
Hunza Lake Bridge Nirbhay x 10
Lahore Bridges Guided Bombs/Artillery
Kargil Nirbhay x 24, Guided Bombs/Artillery
Raulka Nirbhay x 24
Karachi Oil Terminal Pralay x 16
Karachi Naval Dockyard BrahMos x 48, Agni I x 24
Kot Addu Power Plant Pralay x 8
Nandipur Power Plant Nirbhay x 10
Sahiwal Power Plant Nirbhay x 10
Known Air Defense Infrastructure (radars, command centers, etc) Nirbhay x 48

The bombardment will be accompanies with a mass MRLS strike on Pakistani positions in Punjab and Kashmir.

Kashmir:

The hope is to retake Kargil on day 1. Prior to the attack, the sound of helicopters will be used to conceal the movement of the Indian troops to their starting positions. Pakistani positions surrounding the city will be hit with a large number of cruise missiles in addition to the usual ordinance. The steep and winding terrain (and the opponent's lack of effective short-range AA) will protect the cruise missiles on their approach (and hide our helicopters). After the missile and artillery bombardment, our helicopters will finish off any remaining resistance with missiles and rockets while the infantry attacks. If our initial attack fails, the attack from the east and blowing up the bridges on the highway leading to Kargil will hopefully starve the Pakistanis out while we continue

Firing While Advancing Without Aiming in the Soviet/Warsaw Pact armies

I was watching some footage of Soviet Army field exercises, and one thing that stuck out for me was seeing soldiers firing their AKs from the hip while advancing forward. For example, this can be seen here at 2:50.

While I can't find the source (I think it was in Steven Zaloga's "Inside the Soviet Army") I remember reading that this was heavily influenced by how submachine guns were used by Red Army soldiers during WW2, and that marksmanship was usually left to designated marksmen/snipers rather than regular infantry.

I was wondering if this was the norm for Soviet/Warsaw Pact infantry or if I'm extrapolating too much from these short clips. It honestly seems like something that would be a relic from the early 20th century tbh.

Edit: Found the quote!

"The Soviet Army does not, however, appear to provide as much live small arms practice and basic rifle drill as most NATO armies, and appears still to place greater emphasis on basic drill and parade practice. Part of the reason behind the less extensive live firing is the expense; part is also due to the Soviet infantry tradition since the Second World War, which stresses massed fire, not precision marksmanship. The reliance of the Red Army of the Second World War on the PPSH sub-machine gun has carried over to the AK family of assault rifles. Soviet infantrymen are trained in aimed fire, but field exercises also stress firing from the hip while charging forward in conjunction with armored troop carriers. It is felt that in the heat of battle, aimed fire from infantrymen is too much to be expected. What precision marksmanship is required can be provided by snipers, who are available in larger numbers in the Soviet Army than in NATO armies."

A letter to RETO: Heroes & Generals 2 concept - Cold World War (Warsaw Pact vs NATO game)

If Heroes & Generals 2 would ever become a reality, I believe the best scenario for it would be a World War during the Cold War period (in the 1980s).

There would only be two factions (Warsaw Pact vs NATO), with multiple unique vehicles and weapons from the Cold War era.

The Generals WAR map would use the ENTIRE WORLD in the RTS aspect of the game, with most if not all countries capitals avaliable for capture.

New vehicles such as helicopters, cold war jet fighters and tanks would become a reality.

Every player would be able to choose sides between the US-NATO coalition and the might of the Russia-Warsaw Pact in WAR, as well as having more RTS options to achieve victory.

RETO should use Heroes & Generals as a testbed in order to further refine its engine, mechanics, balancing and gameplay before advancing to this promising concept.

If you like this concept idea please share with others and with RETO. Together we can make this a reality.

////////////////

My concept ideas and game assets that could be present in Heroes & Generals 2:

COLD WAR RTS

Russia-Warsaw pact's STARTING CAPITALS: Moscow, Leningrad, Warsaw, Berlin, Minsk, Helsniki.

US-NATO's starting capitals: London, Paris, Ottawa, Honolulu, Tokio, Washington D.C.

Victory condition 1: Control 100% of the world. (Capitals and towns)

Victory condition 2: Have more capitals than the opposing faction before 20 real time days. (overtime if capitals are at an even number)
