It seems odd to me that a nation that is having such a deadly revolution where its Republican Governments were still on shaky ground able to muster not only the men and resources for war, but have the capacity to outwit and defeat nations not suffering such a deadly revolution.
Ok, so I will start this post by admitting that I am a huge dork and I like to do a little role playing in my civilization games. For this particular game though I had kept a notebook by the desktop to record the history of the game's world. So I have a detailed record of this event since it ended up being the largest war I've even had in a Civ 5 game.
To set the scene I was playing as America and by this point I had completely conquered the Aztec empire to the south and colonized Cuba, New Zealand, and Eastern Australia as well as pretty much everything to the East of Missouri with the Shoshone holding the Western portion of the continent. Doing pretty good for myself and even still had a couple of allies in China (my main trade partner) and Germany (who had the most military units at the time.
however tensions were rising between my Alliance (which I called the Allies because I'm a dork) and the larger faction (which I named the Grande Coalition). The Coalition consisted of Russia, England, France, Siam, Songhai, Rome, Mongolia, and Spain (who was the second largest civ at this point to me, having colonized all of Iberia, most of Western Africa through their conquest of the Moroccans, and much of South America). It was a little obvious that war was going to break out and I knew that even if my side started it that I would join in and try and drag in whoever else I could, it was only a matter of where it would start and when.
Eventually I was proven right in the modern age when China began to settle in Vietnam and Siam declared war to control it. Immediately I declared war on Siam and began to send over the naval units I had around Australia and New Zealand to fight the Siam navy (which was larger than China's) and to bombard the Siamese land units. But when I did this I really couldn't believe the reaction. Because I was a war "mongerer" (really because I was one of the few civ's with the freedom Ideology) England, Spain, and Songhai declared war on me, which I kinda anticipated and were prepared for, but the Shoshone and Indian empires also joined in and really threw my entire plan into chaos. All of a sudden India was landing in Western Australia and the Shoshone were cutting through the few units I left on the border like butter all the while while Spain and England started sending over giant armadas to the Eastern Seaboard.
I figured this was going to be the end of my civilization but I wanted to give it my all and one by one key battles th

I've always wondered how a France that is fighting itself and ridden with internal strife was able to fight and succeed for about 20 years against Europe's most powerful countries. I know that they eventually lost, but considering everything, I'm still baffled on how France did so well.
