Thoughts on how long a tree be dead standing before the wood become unusable? Take English walnut for example.

I have reclaimed perfectly good (although spalted) wood from a two year old birch stump (600mm diameter). I wondered if the same could apply for a large walnut tree that has been dead standing for about 3 years.

Thanks for your thoughts.

HELP! My 50+ years old walnut tree is sick...

Hi peeps,

Well, we have had this walnut tree for a while, 50+ years to be exact. It has always been healthy, both the leaves and the fruit, i.e. the walnuts. No black / grey dots, nothing. It gives plenty of walnuts. Not sure what the soil is, but it has always treated us, i.e. the tree well. I guess, if it was so bad for the tree, it wouldn't have grown up so much.

I think it might be sick though. I am attaching some pictures, and a video***.*** I will be uploading a gallery on Google Docs, which you might review . I've made plenty. I can make more in the coming days with anything specific if needed.

Sadly, the village is small and I really can't think of anyone legit to take a look at it. I will be happy to receive some tips for now. Maybe it's all good and that's how it's supposed to be... Thank you.

  1. As you can see, the bark is getting kind of dry, it's separating from the tree, and I can easily take if it off the tree. Beneath, there is this dark thing going on.

That's how it looks like beneath the dry bark

2. At its base, the bark has light shades, lighter colors, and in place, there's something like a spot. Again, it looks like missing bark.
