I work for a small (but not tiny) charity and we only get SMP. I know this is quite common but would be interested to know how common. It's just such a rough deal! If you work for a charity/similar it would be great to know what maternity pay you get and also how big the charity is if possible. Thanks!

I seem to be in a good position financially these days so am trying to work out how much (as a percentage) of my money that it left over at the end of each month should be divied up between emergency fund, investments, pension etc. I belong to a local government pension scheme, and have the option to make additional voluntary contributions to my pension (AVCs).
According to my pension fund:
AVCs are simply a form of investment to build up a separate pot of money, which you draw as a separate pension, and, if you like, at least some of its value as a tax free lump sum. Funds like us use outside AVC providers to run their in house AVC schemes, and we have chosen Prudential. Prudential offer a wide range of investment choices, so that you can choose a product that matches your attitude to risk.
So I'm wondering if rather than AVCs with this provider I should just look to set up my own private pension plan and put a but of money into that each month.
I'd welcome thoughts from anyone else in a similar sutation. Should I be speaking to a financial advisor perhaps?
