INTRODUCTION

This post will attempt to explain the differences in how Filipinos and Indonesians see ethnicity and the nature of the two societies. A couple of years ago I did some posts on the Philippines and Indonesia like TL: DR Reasons for the failure of the Philippines’s foreign policy,

The post will be organized as follows

Many, like Samuel Huntington's in his book Clash of Civilization (1996) label Indonesia as Islamic, and the Philippines as Western, but beyond these simple labels, people are left hanging. Little is done to describe the structure of the societies, how ethnic groups and religious minorities are organized. The four takeaways from this post are:

• Indonesia is a longitudinal archipelagic state-aligned by trade and a shared lingua franca. The Philippines is a latitudinal archipelagic state orientated loosely by trade with China, and later on, shared religion.
• In Maritime Southeast Asia, there are cultural layers, such as Sanskritization, Islam, and Christianity.
• The Indonesian state believes Indonesia consists of multiple societies. While most Filipinos and the Philippines state assume there is mainstream Filipino society.
• The Indonesian state defines ethnicity by blood and keeps detailed records of regions' ethnic composition. The Philippines' state doesn't keep such data.

This post will be the beginning of a series of posts I will do about Indonesia and the Philippines. The purpose of this particular post is to provide a very rough framework for looking at ethnicity, culture, and religion in Indonesia and the Philippines. I won't get into the "why", that will be for subsequent posts.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I'm not Chinese, I'm Vietnamese. Other Asians celebrate the Lunar New Year too (as it marks the start of the LUNAR calendar) and only referring to it as "Chinese New Year" (however well meaning) is akin to lumping all Asians as one "race" (reminds me of Hank Hill saying "Are ya Chinese or Japanese?").

Whenever someone says "Chinese New Year" or asks me questions about it, I refer to it as "Lunar New Year" but it still bugs.

How BASKETBALL got me into my dream med school

No, it wasn't my four years of experience putting on community health fairs for the underserved Vietnamese and Hispanic immigrant populations.

If you've read the title, you certainly know that — without fail — every medical school interview I attended asked me about BASKETBALL.

Too often, we premeds are preoccupied with getting into the most exclusive, most competitive clubs on campus.

The Mobile Clinic Project.

The Student Stroke Team.

The Fellowship for International Service and Health.

All are absolutely wonderful organizations that do revolutionary work and yes, you'll find many high-achieving premeds there.

Don't get me wrong — I know that people experiencing homelessness is a MAJOR issue, especially within my home, Los Angeles.

And let me be clear — someone in America has a stroke EVERY 40 SECONDS.

And don't misunderstand me — we need to use our resources to support the development of other countries' health and infrastructure.

But for me — and I imagine the same is for you — these aren't my true, number one passions.

Instead, I wake up thinking about mentorship, finding the best ways to support the generations of premeds that come after me — just like my mentors supported me.

I get unbelievably excited supporting communities of Vietnamese and Hispanic immigrants because these are the folks that raised me when my parents were out working hard.

And of course, I have an undying itch to be involved with basketball.

This love transformed into:

1. Coaching a youth basketball team I named the "Hoopers" while studying for the MCAT
2. Refereeing Intramural basketball to earn some side money, stay in shape, and be involved with the game
3. The actual INTRODUCTION to my personal statement (see below)

People are supposed to recognize only person holding the title Huangdi (emperor) in East Asia. You cannot recognize two people holding that title.

Multiple people can hold the titles of Wang (King) or other titles like Gong (Duke), Hou (marquis), Bo (Count or earl) Zi (viscount) Nan (baron) but two people either the title of Huangdi or Tianzi (Son of Heaven) do not recognize each other.

Vietnamese monarchs used the title king when corresponding with China and did not use the title Huangdi when talking to China and only used the Huangdi title internally to their own subjects and other Southeast Asians.

Koreans did not use the title Huangdi at all until 1897 when relations with China broke off after the first Sino-Japanese war. They used the title King and recognized only the emperor in China as the Huangdi and used his reign name for calendar dates. Koreans even rejected Japanese diplomatic delegations for daring to use the title Huang or Tiandi since they only recognized one in China. Dali and Western Xia both used the title king in external communications and Huangdi only to their subjects.

In China when two dynasties each claim the title Huangdi they do not recognize each other. One of them had to be forced to defer to the other and not use their title in diplomatic communications. Monarchs of kingdoms like Wuyue recognize another dynasty like Later Zhou holding the title Huangdi and use their reign name.

Dynasties in China addressed the Japanese monarch and shogun as "kings of Japan" and never recognized the Japanese monarchs claimed title of Tianhuang (Tennō).

A huangdi only performs sacrifices to heaven and his own ancestors, not to the ancestors and deities unrecognized outside of Japan.

The Manchukuo fake puppet state had a Huangdi (Kangde) and Tennō of Japan recognize each other with their titles with both of them claiming to be an "empire" (Di guo) and with worship of the ancestors of the Japanese monarch and amatersasu and state shinto as part of the ceremonies carried out in Manchukuo and a replica of Yasukuni shrine built.

Every dynasty in China had classical Chinese as the de facto official state language and non-Han dynasties would have just their own language as the second official language and would never make some random foreign language the language of the state. Japanese was an official language in Manchukuo.

I unselected the KDE PIM when installing the distro, it seems the first update is trying to install it though. Luckily there was a curl error after clicking Update in the system tray widget (which uses pkcon?) when it tried to download akonadi-calendar-... or I'd need to manually uninstall all the packages.

Will right clicking patterns-kde-kde_pim and clicking "Taboo Never Install" stop this from happening? Is this a known bug that the installer doesn't do this?
