The only QB to win the NFL MVP on a non-playoff team: Johnny Unitas of the 1967 Colts, who went 11-1 (LOL) with a couple of ties. A few more QBs have received at least one MVP vote on non-playoff teams, including Dan Marino (44 TD passes in 1986).

Yup, a team led by the late great Unitas failed to make the playoffs despite going 11-1 with a couple of ties in there. I wonder why Marino didn't make the playoffs in 1986 despite having his second season of over 40 TD passes. Interesting. But yeah, it's possible for a QB to win the NFL MVP on a non-playoff team. Like if a QB put up something like 60-65 TD passes with about 6,000 passing yards, and a QB Rating over 130 on team that goes 11-6 with the worst defense of all-time while no other player are having a truly standout season, I would give him the MVP. Can't do much if the defense is horrible. Football is a team game, after all.
